LibreOffice Suite 6.3 is a free power-packed Open Source Software productivity office suite developed by The Document Foundation as a fork of OpenOffice.org. It has six feature-rich applications for all document production and data processing needs: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base. Comparing it to Microsoft’s Office product, you get the following applications.

  • Writer = Word
  • Calc = Excel
  • Impress = PowerPoint
  • Base = Access

They also have Draw, a program the lets you build sketches and diagrams and Math is an equation editor.

The Suite maintains compatibility with all competitors' file formats. You can import or save from Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The application is open source and licensed under the LGPL. What that means for you is that it is free. Other handy features, such as a built in PDF creator allows you to save documents in a format that anyone can easily read. LibreOffice is also fully compatible with Microsoft Office Suite.

Its developers' goal is to produce a vendor-independent office suite with ODF support and without any copyright assignment requirements.

The name is a hybrid word with the first part Libre, which means free (as in freedom) in French and Spanish, and the English word Office.

So, if you looking for a Microsoft Office alternative or just need a simple word processor, this could be your solution. Learn more at http://www.libreoffice.org

Learners: Useful for school students (7th standard and above), anyone who wishes to learn to use an OFFICE suite.
