00:36 | To install an OS inside a VirtualBox, the base machine should have the following configuration. |

00:49 | Hard disk free space 50GB or more and |
00:54 | Virtualization should be enabled on BIOS |
00:58 | This will ensure that the VirtualBox will work smoothly. |
01:03 | Before we start installing, kindly cross-check whether the System type is 32-bit or 64-bit. |
01:12 | To do so, go to the search box next to the Start menu. Type About your PC. |

01:25 | Under System type, we can see whether we are running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows. |
01:34 | Here in my case it is 64-bit Windows. |
01:39 | Based on your System type, download the suitable Ubuntu Linux 16.04 ISO from this link:

02:45 | First we will learn how to create a virtual machine inside the VirtualBox. |
02:52 | On the Desktop, double-click on the VirtualBox icon to launch it. |
02:59 | At the top of the VirtualBox window, locate the blue color icon New and click on it. |
03:06 | In the Create Virtual Machine window which opens, we can see the page Name and Operating system. |
03:14 | Under the Name text box, type the name you wish to give.
I will type Ubuntu. |
03:22 | Then under the dropdown Type, select Linux. |
03:27 | From the dropdown Version, I will select Ubuntu (64-bit). |
03:33 | In case your base machine is 32-bit, then select Ubuntu (32-bit) from the dropdown. |
03:40 | And click on the Next button at the bottom of the window. |
03:44 | The next page is Memory size.
Here we allocate the size of the RAM for the virtual machine. |
03:52 | Use the slider or the text box to allocate the size for the RAM. |
03:58 | Since the unit says MB, I will type 4048 in the textbox. |
04:05 | This will allocate 4GB of RAM to this virtual machine. |
04:11 | If the system memory of the base machine is only 4GB, then allocate 2GB for the virtual machine. |
04:19 | Now click on the Next button at the bottom of the window. |
04:24 | On the Hard disk page, we have to decide which type of virtual hard disk we are going to use. |
04:32 | I’m creating a new virtual machine, so I will select Create a virtual hard disk now. |
04:39 | This option could be already selected by default for you. |
04:44 | Click on the Create button at the bottom. |
04:48 | In the Hard disk file type, select VDI (Virtual Disk Image)
And click on the Next button at the bottom of the window |
04:59 | In the next page Storage on physical hard disk, we have to decide how our hard disk storage has to be.
There are two options here. |
05:11 | Dynamically allocated option will expand the hard disk storage based on the usage. |
05:19 | Fixed Size will allocate the size which we define.
I will choose Fixed size. |
05:27 | Now click on the Next button to proceed. |
05:31 | The next page File location and size, is to allocate the hard disk size. |
05:38 | Here you can see the name Ubuntu which we gave earlier. |
05:44 | Also to the right we can see a folder icon. |
05:48 | If you wish to save this Virtual Disk Image in another location, click on this icon and proceed.
I’m skipping this part for this demonstration. |
06:02 | Next use the slider or the textbox to allocate the hard disk size. |
06:09 | The recommended size is 10GB, but I will change it to 20GB. |
06:16 | Then click on the Create button at the bottom. |
06:20 | This will create a new Virtual Machine base with the details we have provided so far.
This may take some time to create. |
06:31 | Once the Virtual Machine is created, we can see it on the left side. |
06:37 | Here is the Virtual Machine, Ubuntu which we created just now. |
06:42 | This indicates that we have successfully created the Virtual Machine that is the VM. |
06:49 | Next let us install Ubuntu Linux 16.04 on it. |
06:55 | By default, the Virtual Machine will be in Power off mode. |
07:00 | Select the Virtual Machine, Ubuntu.
Then at the top, click on the Start button with the green color arrow. |
07:09 | A new window will popup and ask us to select the virtual optical disk file or a physical optical drive.
Locate the folder icon and click on it. |
07:22 | Now browse and select the file ubuntu hyphen 16.04.5 hyphen desktop hyphen amd64.iso which we had downloaded earlier. |
07:37 | And click on the Open button at the bottom. |
07:41 | Now we will be redirected to the previous screen.
Notice that ubuntu hyphen 16.04.5 hyphen desktop hyphen amd64.iso is now selected. |
07:56 | Click on the Start button at the bottom to start the installation. |
08:02 | We can see here that Ubuntu Linux is loading. |
08:07 | The first screen we see, has three options. |
08:11 | On the left we can see a list of languages.
Select the language that you prefer. |
08:18 | By default, English is selected. I will leave this selection as it is. |
08:25 | At the center we can see two options, Try Ubuntu and Install Ubuntu. |
08:31 | If you wish to try the look and feel of Ubuntu before installing, click on Try Ubuntu. |
08:38 | Else directly click on Install Ubuntu.
I will click on the option Install Ubuntu. |
08:47 | The next page shows two options.

09:05 | The third page is one of the important steps during Ubuntu Linux installation.
Here we have to decide where we are going to install Ubuntu Linux. |

This is a good option if we are installing Ubuntu on our machine directly, without VirtualBox. |

With this option we can have a dual boot OS in our base machine. |
09:34 | As I’m working on a VirtualBox, I will select Erase disk and install Ubuntu |
09:41 | This option will erase the entire Virtual hard disk and install Ubuntu OS as a single partition. |
09:49 | Then click on Install Now button at the bottom. |
09:53 | A popup window Write the changes to the disks? opens. |
09:59 | Here, click on Continue button. |
10:03 | Next comes the page, Where are you?
I’m in India, so I will click on India. |
10:11 | In the textbox located below, it says Kolkata.
Based on our selection, it will set the time zone. |
10:21 | Click on Continue at the bottom. |
10:24 | Now we have to select our Keyboard layout. |
10:28 | By default, English (US) will be selected on both the sides. |
10:34 | If you wish to change the language, then select the desired option.
I will proceed with English (US). |
10:42 | Click on the Continue at the bottom. |
10:46 | The final step is to provide the login details.
I will fill the Your name field as spoken. |
10:55 | Immediately the fields Computer’s name and Pick a username will be filled based on our input.
You can change these values if you wish. |
11:07 | Next in the Choose a password textbox, type the password for your Ubuntu Linux OS.
I will type spoken. |
11:18 | In the Confirm your password textbox, retype the same password. |
11:24 | Kindly note down this password, as this is the admin password for this Ubuntu Linux OS. |
11:32 | Below the password textbox, we can see some more options.
I will select Require my password to login. |
11:42 | This will insist that the user enters the password every time he/she logs in. |
11:49 | Click on Continue to proceed with the installation. |
11:53 | The installation may take some time to complete. |
11:58 | Once the installation is complete, we can see a dialog box that says Installation Complete. |
12:06 | In that dialog box, click on Restart Now button. |
12:11 | A screen appears saying that Ubuntu is loading.
It will prompt us to press Enter to remove the installation medium. |
12:20 | For eg: CD/USB Stick, etc.
Press Enter on your keyboard. |
12:28 | This will start this Virtual Machine and take us to the login page. |
12:34 | Login with the details which we gave during the installation. |
12:39 | We are brought to the Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop.
This indicates that we have successfully completed the installation. |
12:49 | To shut down Ubuntu, click on the power icon at the top right corner.
And select Shut Down option. |
12:58 | In the popup which appears, click on the large Shut Down button. |
13:04 | Immediately the Ubuntu window gets closed and we are back to the VirtualBox manager. |
