Show slide number 1	Hello Everybody. Welcome to the tutorial - 'Typing in Local languages in LibreOffice Writer'.

You can use this method to configure any language in LibreOffice. Use Synaptic Package Manager to install packages. Show Slide number 5 Step 1: Check if SCIM is installed on your computer Mark the following packages in the Synaptic Package Manager to install SCIM. scim , scim-bridge-agent , scim-bridge-client-gtk , scim-bridge-client-qt4 , scim-m17n , scim-modules-table	The configuration is done in four steps - Check if SCIM is installed on your computer If not, use the Synaptic Package Manager to mark the following packages and install SCIM. Pause this tutorial while you do this and resume when done.
Show Slide number 6 Step 2:Select SCIM-immodule as keyboard input method. Step 3:Configure SCIM to select Kannada as a language for text input. Step 4:Configure LibreOffice to select Kannada for Complex Text layout.	# Next select SCIM-immodule as keyboard input method. Configure SCIM to select Kannada as a language for text input. Configure LibreOffice to select Kannada for Complex Text layout. I will now demonstrate these steps.
Click on System >> Administration >> Language support.	Click on System, Administration and Language support.
Click on 'Remind me later' <if it appears>	If you get a screen saying 'Remind me later' or 'Install now', click on 'Remind me later'. We do not get such a screen. So we will proceed further.
In Keyboard input method system >> select scim-immodule.	In the Keyboard input method system, select scim-immodule. Here it is already selected, so we will not do anything.
Click on System >> Preferences >> SCIM Input Method	Thirdly, click on System, Preferences and SCIM Input Method to configure SCIM.
	You cannot see it on the screen right now. But when you try this on your computer, you will be able to see this option.
Under IMEngine >> Global Setup Point to the form with all the languages displayed.	Under IMEngine, click on Global Setup. SCIM will show a list with all the languages it supports text processing in.
Point to the languages as they are being narrated.	This includes most widely spoken Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Urdu, Kannada, etc
Check on Kannada and Hindi.	For our tutorial Kannada and Hindi should be selected.
Click OK	Click OK to save your configuration. We will have to restart the machine to ensure that SCIM changes have taken effect. Please do so and return back to this tutorial.
Click on Applications >> Office >> LibreOffice Writer.	Now we will configure Kannada processing in LibreOffice. Click on Applications, Office and LibreOffice Writer.
Click on Tools >> Options Point to the form.	We will click on Tools in the main menu and Options sub-option. You will see the Options dialog box.
Click on the Language settings >> Languages option.	In this box, we will click on the Language Settings and then Languages option.
Click on check box “Enabled for complex text layout (CTL)'	Click on the check box Enabled for complex text layout (CTL), if it is not already checked.
From the CTL menu option >> select Kannada. Click on OK	Please select Kannada from the CTL drop-down. By default, this will set your local language setting to Kannada. Click on OK.
Switch to Slide 7 We will type a sentence in Kannada and English. We will use Baraha method, the Nudi method and we will use UNICODE fonts. We will finally save the file.	We will now type a sentence in Kannada and English. We will use the Baraha method, the Nudi method and we will use UNICODE fonts. We will finally save the file.
Switch to LibreOffice Window	Let me demonstrate this now.
Type the sentence - “Ubuntu GNU/Linux supports multiple languages with LibreOffice."	In the opened text document, lets type, “Ubuntu GNU/Linux supports multiple languages with LibreOffice."
Hold the CONTROL Key and hit the space bar.	Hold the CONTROL key and hit the space bar.
Point to the small window at the bottom right of the screen. Select Kannada KN-ITRANS	A small window opens at the bottom right of the screen. Select Kannada KN-ITRANS, for inputting text in simple phonetic method which is similar to the Baraha method.
Click on the Kannada – KN KGP.	If you want the Nudi keyboard layout, click on the Kannada – KN KGP. I will use the KN-ITRANS input method which is simple and therefore easier for beginners.
Type “Sarvajanika Tantramsha”.	Type “Sarvajanika Tantramsha” in English. You will see the Kannada text being displayed on the screen.
Hold CONTROL Key and hit space bar.	Hold the CONTROL Key and hit the space bar. The window disappears. We can now type in English. Thus CONTROL key plus space bar acts as a toggle between English and the other language selected.
Switch to Slide 8	Please refer to the document on Kannada text processing available at www.Public-Software.in/Kannada for specific information about typing in Kannada, including typing in Nudi, using 'arkavathu'.
Switch to Slide 9	We shall use only UNICODE font while typing in Indian languages, since UNICODE is the universally accepted font. Lohit Kannada is the UNICODE font that I am using. Please note that I have shown you Kannada text processing, The same procedure can be used to type text in any of the languages shown under SCIM Input Method using LibreOffice Writer.
Switch to Slide 10 (Assignment)	Finally, the ASSIGNMENT. Type a list of 3 books in Kannada. Provide the English transliteration of the titles.

Switch to Slide 11	A quick summary. In this tutorial, We learnt how to configure Ubuntu and LibreOffice for keyboard and language settings. We also saw how to type in different methods, for example, Baraha and Nudi. We have seen how to type a bilingual document.
