You should also have a working Internet connection.
So, first let us openSynaptic Package Manager. |
Go to
Application-> System Tools-> Administration and then click on Synaptic Package manager |
To do so, go toApplication-> System Tools-> Administration.
And then click onSynaptic Package Manager. |
Now, an authentication dialog box appears asking for theadminpassword.
Let us type theadminpassword and pressEnter. | |
Slide 3 : Running Synaptic Package Manager first time. | When we use theSynaptic Package Managerfor the first time, an introduction dialog box appears.
This dialog box has information on how to useSynaptic Package Manager.
One has to configureProxyinSynaptic Package Manager for installing an application or package. |
Switch toSynaptic Package Managerwindow. | To do this, let us switch toSynaptic Package Managerwindow. |
Go toSettingand click onPreferences | Now go toSettingand click onPreferences. |
There are several tabs onPreferences window. | |
Click onNetworktab. | Click onNetworktabto configure theproxy settings. |
Point to the two options. | There are two options under theProxy Server–Direct Connectionand
Manual Proxy Connection |
Point to or highlightManual Proxy Configuration | I am usingManual Proxy Configuration as you can see here. |
Click onAuthenticate button.
Enterusername andpassword and click onOK |
You may select your preferred option and click onAuthenticate button.
HTTPAuthentication window appears on the screen.
Enterusername andpassword If required and click onOK. |
Click onApply | Now click on“Apply” to apply the changes. |
Click onOK | Click onOK to close the window. |
To learn how to use this tool, I shall now installvlc player as an example. | |
Click onReload |
If you are using theSynaptic Package Manager for the first time, you need to reload the packages.
To do this, click on“Reload” button on the tool bar.
This may take a few seconds. |
Here we can see that the packages are being transfered via Internet and are getting updated. | |
In thequick search boxtype: vlc | Once reloading is complete, go to thequick search boxwhich is in thetool barand type“vlc” |
Showvlc packages | Here we can see all thevlc packages are listed. |
Click on the check box | Click on the check box next to thevlc packages. |
Click onMark for installation | Now select the option “Mark for installation” from the menu bar that appears. |
Click on“Mark” button |
A dialog box appears showing the list of repository packages.
Click on“Mark” button to mark all the dependencies automatically. |
Click on“Apply” | Go to the tool bar and click on the “Apply” button. |
ASummary window appears showing the details of the packages to be installed. | |
Click on“Apply” | Click on“Apply” button to start the installation.
The installation time depends on the number and size of the packages to be installed. |
“Downloading Package File” window will be closed as soon as the installation gets completed. | |
Close the“Synaptic Package Manager” window | We can see thatvlc is installed now.
Close the“Synaptic Package Manager” window. |
Now, let us verify if thevlc playerhas been successfully installed on our machine. | |
Go toApplications->Sound & Video | For this, let us go toApplications->Sound & Video. |
Here we can see thatvlc media player is listed.
This meansvlchas been successfully installed.
In a similar way, we can install other applications usingSynaptic Package Manager. | |
