Slide 1: Welcome to Tutorial	Welcome to this spoken tutorial on how to use Synaptic Package Manager.
Slide 2: Objective	In this tutorial, we will learn to install applications in BOSS Linux 3.4.2 usingSynaptic Package Manager
Slide 3: System Requirements	Here I am using BOSS Linux OS 3.4.2 with gnome environment desktop.
Slide 4: Prerequisites	You will need administrative rights to use Synaptic Package Manager. You should also have a working Internet connection. So, first let us open Synaptic Package Manager. Let me minimize the window. You can see the BOSS desktop here.
Go to Application-> System Tools-> Administration and then click on Synaptic Package manager	Now, go to Application; System Tools, Administration. And then click on Synaptic Package Manager.
	Now, an authentication dialog box appears asking for the adminpassword. Let us type the adminpassword and pressEnter.
Slide 3 : Running Synaptic Package Manager first time.	When we use the Synaptic Package Manager for the first time, an introduction dialog box appears. This dialog box has information on how to use Synaptic Package Manager. If you are working under proxy network then, configureProxy in Synaptic Package Manager for installing an application or package. Else you can skip these proxy configuration setting
Switch toSynaptic Package Managerwindow.	To do this, let us switch to Synaptic Package Manager window.
Go toSettingand click onPreferences	Now go to Setting and click onPreferences.
	There are several tabs on Preferences window.
Click onNetworktab.	Click onNetwork tab to configure theproxy settings.
Point to the two options.	There are two options under the Proxy Server–Direct Connection to the internet and Manual Proxy Connection
Point to or highlightManual Proxy Configuration	I am using Manual Proxy Configuration as you can see here.
Click onAuthenticate button. Enterusername andpassword and click onOK	You may select your preferred option and click onAuthenticate button. HTTPAuthentication window appears on the screen. Enter username and password If required and click onOK.
Click onApply	Now click on Apply to apply the changes.
Click onOK	Click onOK to close the window.
	To learn how to use this tool, I shall now install vlc player as an example.
Click onReload	If you are using theSynaptic Package Manager for the first time, you need to reload the packages. To do this, click on“Reload” button on the tool bar. This may take a few seconds.
	Here we can see that the packages are being transfered via Internet and are getting updated.
In thequick search boxtype: vlc	Once reloading is complete, go to the quick search box which is in the tool barand type“vlc”
Showvlc packages	Here we can see all the vlc packages are listed.
Click on the check box	Click on the check box next to thevlc packages.
Click onMark for installation	Now select the option “Mark for installation” from the menu bar that appears.
Click on“Mark” button	A dialog box appears showing the list of repository packages. Click on“Mark” button to mark all the dependencies automatically.
Click on“Apply”	Go to the tool bar and click on the “Apply” button.
	ASummary window appears showing the details of the packages to be installed.
Click on“Apply”	Click on“Apply” button to start the installation. The installation time depends on the number and size of the packages to be installed.
	“Downloading Package File” window will be closed as soon as the installation gets completed.
Close the“Synaptic Package Manager” window	We can see that vlc is installed now. Close the Synaptic Package Manager window.
	Now, let us verify if the vlc player has been successfully installed on our machine.
Go toApplications->Sound & Video	Let me minimize the screen, For this, let us go to Applications;Sound & Video.
	Here we can see thatvlc media player is listed. This means vlc has been successfully installed. In a similar way, we can install other applications using Synaptic Package Manager.
Slide 4: Summary	Let us summarise. In this tutorial we have learnt to- Configure Proxy in Synaptic Package Manager. Install an application or package using Synaptic Package Manager.
