Short Cut Icon
|
As we access Thunderbird quite often, let’s
create a short cut icon for it. |
Switch to Thunderbird
Point to the Launcher and move the mouse up and down over it. |
Let’s drag and drop the Thunderbird short cut icon on to the Launcher. |
Click Dash Home.
In the Search field, type Thunderbird. |
First, click Dash Home.
In the Search field, that appears, type Thunderbird. |
Point to the Thunderbird icon that appears under the Search field | The Thunderbird icon appears under the Search field. |
Select it, press and hold the left mouse button. | Select it, and do not release the left mouse button. |
Drag and drop the icon to the Launcher. | Now, drag and drop the icon to the Launcher.
And release the left mouse button. |
Click Dash Home to close it.. | Click Dash home to close it. |
Click on the Thunderbird short cut icon and open Thunderbird. | Click on the Thunderbird icon in the Launcher. |
Point to the Thunderbird window. | The Thunderbird window opens. |
Under the Gmail ID, click Inbox. | Under STUSERONE at gmail dot com ID, click Inbox. |
Point to the unread messages from the Yahoo and Gmail accounts. | Notice that some messages are in bold.
These are the unread messages. |
Click the Get Mail icon and select Get All New Messages. | Click the Get Mail icon and select Get All New Messages. |
Point to the new messages that are in the Inbox. | We have received messages from the Gmail account. |

Sort Messages

Let’s say we want to sort these messages by Sender. |
Click on the column header From.
Point that the messages are sorted by From Name. |
Simply click on the column heading From.
The messages are now sorted in an alphabetical order. |
Click on the column header From.
Point that the messages are sorted by Sender in reverse order. |
Let’s click on From once again.
The messages are sorted in the reverse alphabetic order now! |
Now, let’s sort by Subject. | |
Click on the column header Subject.
Point that the messages are sorted by Subject. |
Simply click on Subject.
The messages are sorted by Subject now! |

Tag Messages
|
|
Let’s say you want to tag a mail as Important. | |
Click on Inbox, select the first mail. | Click on Inbox, select the first mail. |
From the toolbar, click the Tag icon and select Important. | Click the Tag icon from the toolbar and select Important. |
Point to the mail that is displayed in the colour red. | Notice that the mail is displayed in the colour red.
Look at the bottom panel. |
Point to the bottom panel and show that the mail is tagged as Important. | The mail is tagged as Important. |
Select the same mail. | To remove the tag, first select the mail. |
From the toolbar, click the Tag icon and click Important again. | From the toolbar, click the Tag icon and click Important again. |
Tag the first mail in the inbox as Important and second mail in the inbox as Work. | Let’s tag the the first mail in the Inbox as Important and the second mail as Work. |
Suppose we want to view only the mails that have been tagged, in the right panel.

Point to the Quick Filter toolbar in the top right panel. | |
In the Quick Filter toolbar, click on the icon Tagged. | To view messages that are tagged, from the Quick Filter toolbar, click on the icon Tagged. |
Only the messages that we tagged are displayed! | |

We use message threads to view related messages
as one entire conversation, in a continuous flow. | |
Let us now learn how to do this. | |
Switch to Thunderbird. | |
Point to and then click on the Click to display message threads icon in the left corner of the Inbox. | Click on the Click to display message threads icon in the left corner of the Inbox. |
Point to the message threads. | The mails are displayed as a conversation.

Click on the Threading symbol present next to the corresponding thread. |
To view the full conversation click on the Threading symbol present next to the corresponding thread. |
Point to the Preview Pane where it is displayed. | The entire conversation is visible in the message preview panel. |
Click on the Thread icon again. | To come out of the Thread view, simply click on the Thread icon again. |

Save and Print Messages

Let us now learn how to save a mail to a folder and then print it. |
Go to the folder Saved Mails on the desktop. | For the purposes of this tutorial:

Switch to TB. | |
Select the first mail. | Let’s select and save the first mail. |
Double-click on it. | Double-click on the mail. |
Select the tab on which opens. | It opens in a separate tab. |
From the toolbar >> click File >> Save As and File. | From the toolbar, click File, Save As and File. |
Point to the Save Message As dialog box. | The Save Message As dialog box appears. |
Browse for Desktop and select the folder Saved Mails.
Click Save. |

Point that the message is saved in the folder. | The message is saved in the folder. |
Browse to the Saved Mails and double-click and open it. | Let’s go to the Saved Mails folder.
Double-click on it and open it. |
Point to the mail that opens and point the cursor to Gedit that is displayed at the top of the file. | The mail opens in Gedit as a text file.

Close the text file by clicking on the x icon at the top left corner. | Let’s close and exit this file. |
Switch to Thunderbird. | You can also save the message as a template. |
Go to the message tab that we opened. | |
From the toolbar >> click File >> Save As and Template. | From the toolbar, click File, Save As and Template.
The message is saved, in the Templates folder, in Thunderbird. |
From the Thunderbird left panel, click the Templates folder. | From the Thunderbird left panel, click the Templates folder. |
Select the mail and double-click. | Select the mail and double-click. |

Point to the separate tab as, with the To addresses field, filled with the contacts, listed in the original mail. |

Print a Message

Now, let’s print a message. |
Click on Inbox and from the right panel, select the second mail and double click on it.
It opens in a new tab. |

In the Main menu, go to File, and then select Print. |
From the Main menu, go to File, and then select Print. |
Point to the Print dialog box. | The Print dialog box appears.

We shall print this mail on an A4 sheet, with Orientation as Portrait
and make two copies of this mail. | |

Point to the Print button.
Do not click on it. |

Close the Mail tab, by clicking on the Close Tab icon, That is black x cross on the top right corner of the tab. |
Let’s click Cancel to exit the Print dialog box.
Also, let’s close the Mail tab. |
Now, let’s send a video as an attachment to the Yahoo account. | |
Let’s compose a new message. | |
Click Write.
The New Message window appears. |
From the Menu bar, click Write.
The New Message window appears. |
In the To field type S. | In the To field, type the first letter of the yahoo id, that is S.

Point to the yahoo mail id that automatically populates. | Notice that the yahoo mail id is automatically filled. |
In the Subject Field type Video Attachment. | In the Subject field, type Video Attachment. |
From the toolbar, click Attach.
The Attach dialog box opens. |

Click Open. |

Archive Messages

Thunderbird lets you archive such messages. | |
Switch to TB | First we must check the archive settings. |
From the left panel, click on the STUSERONE gmail account. | From the left panel, click on the STUSERONE gmail account. |
From the right panel, under Accounts, click View Settings for this account. | From the right panel, under Accounts, click View Settings for this account. |
The Accounts Settings dialog box appears. | The Accounts Settings dialog box appears. |
From the left panel, click on the STUSERONE gmail account and click Copies and Folders. | From the left panel, click on the STUSERONE gmail account and click Copies and Folders. |
Point to the Message Archives options are enabled. | The Message Archives options are enabled.
These options determine the folder in which the messages are archived. |
If these options are not enabled, then:

Now under the STUSERONE Gmail account click on Inbox. | Now, under the STUSERONE Gmail account click on Inbox. |
Let’s archive the third message. | |
Select the third message, right-click for the context menu and select Archive. | From the right panel, select it.
Right-click for the context menu and select Archive. |
From the left panel, click on the STUSERONE@gmail.com.
Under it the Archives folder is present. Double-click on the Archives folder. |
The message is moved to the Archives folder, under the STUSERONE Gmail account.

Point it is no longer displayed in the Inbox. | It is no longer displayed in the Inbox. |

Activity Manager

This is simple too!
The Activity Manager displays the list of actions carried out in Thunderbird. |
Switch to TB
From the Main menu, click Tools and Activity Manager. |
From the Main menu, click Tools and Activity Manager. |
Point to the Activity Manager dialog box. | The Activity Manager dialog box appears.
You can now view the list to check all email activity! |
Close the Activity Manager dialog box. | Let’s close the Activity Manager dialog box. |
Click on the red cross in the left corner of the Thunderbird window | Let’s exit Thunderbird, by clicking on the red cross in the left corner of the Thunderbird window. |
