Hello and welcome to this spoken tutorial on Using

Modification Tools to Stretch and Mirror in QCAD

In this tutorial we will learn how to
  • Stretch
  • Mirror

in QCAD.

Switch to Slide 3 For this tutorial, I am using GNU Linux operating system Ubuntu Version 10.04 LTS

and QCAD Community Edition Version 2.0.5.0

Switch to QCAD application window


I assume that you know how to use Qcad, If not then please refer to our earlier tutorials available on spoken-tutorial site.

We will now see the Stretch tool

Open QCAD application.

In my QCAD application, I have set the units to meters, and grid size to 0.25x0.25.

Let's draw a rectangle.

To do this -> go to line tool and click on rectangle icon.

Choose snap to grid option and left click on the grid for first corner and

second click to complete rectangle.

Zoom in using middle mouse button if grid is too small.

Stretch Tool


We will stretch this rectangle that we have drawn here.

Go to Modify->stretch or

from left tool bar,

Click on edit and click on stretch icon. (In video: hover over stretch icon, next to scissors)


You will need to specify first corner and second corner, area from where stretch should apply.

I am using snap to grid.

However, you can use suitable snapping options.

To select first corner, move mouse cross hair over that area and left click to select it.

Similarly using mouse again hover over second area and left click to select.

Reference point is asked, with respect to which it will start the stretch.

I want to start it from top right corner. That is why I am using intersection of this point.

Now we will specify the target point, till where the object should be stretched.

Here I can use mouse and left click for the point till where I want this rectangle stretched.

To make sure it stretches in 90 degree angle you can enable 'orthogonal restriction' from left tool bar

which is available below snapping options.

Just remember to uncheck or disable it afterwards.

Now I will left click for target point somewhere up here

and rectangle is stretched till that point.

You can also stretch an object by a specific distance.

Let us stretch this rectangle on other side to see it.

Suppose If I want it to move 5 units to right,

On the top menu, I will click on the "Modify option". Select "Stretch tool" .

Select first corner, by using snap option-snap to grid and

left click using mouse button on the top line somewhere in middle.

Now select second corner as intersection of bottom lines, here.

To specify distance at target point, at command prompt type @5<0, as I would want this rectangle to stretch 5 units to right.

Practical use of Stretch tool Let us see where can we use this tool.

Say I have a drawing of a door, and would like to use it for other opening which is little longer in size.

I do not need to redesign the door,

I can copy this one by going to modify,


move and copy, to new opening area.

Go to modify copy.

To select object, go to the tool bar and select the 'select window' option.

Now left click outside the object to start window then

hold left mouse button and drag and release after selection is done.

Now move it to new location, give target point, intersection of this.

So I have copied this door.

Now I want to stretch it.

Go to modify -stretch. I will use free positioning.

For this I will select two corners of the door.

Now for the reference point I will use end point.

For target point, I need to stretch it till the top

Here if lines do not appear straight, please use the orthogonal lines from tool bar.

Remember to disable it after the use.

And the door is stretched for new opening size.

Check Mirror Tool


We will now see the Mirror tool.

Let us open a new drawing, go to file -> new

Draw horizontal line of length, say 50.

From left tool bar click on line icon and

select option for horizontal line,

Here on top we can specify the line length.

Choosing snap to grid option, left click on drawing area to place the line.

Now I will draw line at an angle. I will use this option line with given angle.

Say angle 67 and line of length 50.

From start and somewhere on the entity,

let's say here.

We know that angles work anti-clockwise in QCAD so +67 will draw a line in the first quadrant.

Let's mirror this line on the left hand side. Go to modify- > mirror from top menu.

Select objects to mirror. Select line by left clicking on it.

To continue the action click on the arrow which is available on the left tool bar.

Specify first point of mirror line, let's say end point of this one.

And specify second point for mirror line.

If you move your mouse it can show you where it is going to mirror the line.

Since I want it on left hand side, for second point of mirror line,

I need to give it somewhere up here.

At this window select, keep original option.

It has mirrored this line.

Let's say I want to draw a rhombus using this tool.

I can again use mirror tool.

Then select both these lines by left clicking on it.

Go to modify-> mirror, since I have already selected I can continue.

For my mirror line this time, I want to mirror this on opposite side.

So my imaginary mirror line will be end of this one, and end of this one.

So rhombus is ready using mirror tool.

(Assignment)


Now the assignment part.

I would like you to draw following using tools learnt in this tutorial.

For stretch tool draw rectangle of size 50x10, and circle of radius 3 inside. Stretch it 5 units to right.

Let's see for mirror tool, draw horizontal line and then draw line of 30 units at 67 degree angle.

At the end of it draw another 30 units line.

Mirror these two lines and draw line joining these end points.
