To record this tutorial, I am using
  • Windows 11
  • Google chrome browser version 144 point 0 point 7 and
  • A working internet connection.

Pre-requisites

To follow this tutorial,
  • Learners should be familiar with Windows G U I.
Let us learn to install PostgreSQL in Windows O S.
In the web browser,

typehttps://www.postgresql.org/download

Click on the windows link.

Cursor on Windows installers page.

Open any web browser.

Here I am using Google Chrome browser.

In the address bar let us type this u r l and press Enter.


Click on the Windows link.

Windows installers page opens.

Click on the Download the installer Let me click the Download the installer link.
Cursor on the cookies window. The cookies window is displayed.

Click on the Agree and proceed button to continue.

Cursor on PostgreSQL page.

Click on Windows x86-64 exe for the PostgreSQL version 18.1

Download Post gres Q L page opens.


Click on Windows x 86 hyphen 64 exe for the Post gres Q L version 18 point 1.

Highlight the Windows download button.

Go to Downloads folder and locate the file postgresql-18.1-2-windows-x64

Please wait for the download to complete.

The executable file downloads to your Downloads folder.

Go to the Downloads folder and locate the postgresql hyphen 18 point 1 hyphen 2 hyphen windows hyphen x 64 file.

Double-click the downloaded postgresql-18.1-2-windows-x64 file to start the installation. Let us double click on the downloaded file to start the installation process.
User Account Control dialog box appears, Click on Yes. User Account Control dialog box opens.

Click the Yes button to allow.

Cursor on Setup-PostgreSQL window.

Click Next.

Setup Post gres Q L window appears.

Click the Next button at the bottom to continue.

Installation Directory window displays.

Click Next.

Installation Directory window opens.


You can choose the destination folder or keep the default location.


I will keep the default folder location and

click the Next button to continue.

Cursor on Select Components window.

Click Next.

Select Components window appears.

Observe that all the checkboxes are checked by default.

We will leave them as such and click the Next button.

Cursor on Data Directory window.

Click Next.

The Data Directory window opens.


Let me click the Next button to continue.

Enter Password: postgres

Re-type one more time.

Click Next.

Let us type the password as postgres.

Let’s type the same password to confirm.

Click on the Next button to continue.

Cursor on Setup-Port window.

Click Next.

Setup Port window appears.

By default, Port is set.

Let us leave it as it is and click Next.

Cursor on Advance Options window.

Click Next.

Advance Options window appears..

Let me leave it as Default locale and click the Next button.

Click Next.

Pre Installation Summary window appears.

Please read the summary carefully and the Next button.

Cursor on Ready to Install window.

Click Next.

Ready to Install window appears.

Click Next to start the installation.

It may take some time to complete the installation process.

Uncheck the checkbox.

Click the Finish button.

Setup has finished installing.

It will ask for downloading and installing additional tools for Postgesql.

Please uncheck the check box, checked by default.

Now click the Finish button to complete the installation.

Go to the Start menu, click All. Scroll down and click on PostgreSQL 18.

From the dropdown, click on SQL Shell(psql).

Cursor on SQL Shell (psql) opens.

Cursor on Server [localhost]:

Press Enter.

Let’s now verify the installation.


Go to the Start menu, click All.

Scroll down and click on Post gres Q L 18.


From the dropdown, click on SQL Shell p s q l.


S Q L Shell p s q l opens.


Server localhost appears on the screen.

Press Enter.

Cursor on Database [postgres]:

Press Enter.

Database postgres appears on the screen. Press Enter.
Cursor on Port [5432]:

Press Enter.

Port 5 4 3 2 appears on the screen.

Press Enter.

Cursor on Username [postgres]:

Press Enter.

Username postgres appears on the screen. Press Enter.
Enter the password: postgres

Press Enter.

Enter the password that was set during the installation.

Press Enter.

Cursor on postgres=# Enter prompt changes to post gresequal to hash
Type: SELECT version(); and press Enter. To see Post gres Q L version details,

Type: SELECT space version open bracket close bracket semicolon and press Enter.

We can see the details of PostgresQL version.

Narration. This means:
  • Post gres Q L is installed,
  • Server is running and
  • We are connected to it successfully.
Go to Start, In the search bar type, pgAdmin4.

Click on the icon to open the application.

pgAdmin4 interface opens.

Let us go to the Start menu.

In the search bar let me type, p g Admin 4.

Click on the icon to open the application.
