Only narration The user interface of Osdag for Ubuntu Linux, and for Windows is the same.

Annotations are added to the tutorial if there are any differences.

Point to the Osdag shortcut icon on the Desktop. We can see the Osdag shortcut icon on the Desktop.
Cursor pointing to the icon. This icon will appear only if we have successfully installed Osdag.
Double-click on the Osdag shortcut icon Let us start the Osdag software by double-clicking on the Osdag icon.
Cursor on the Osdag Interface. It may take some time to open Osdag for the very first time.
Point towards the Osdag Interface. Now we can see the Osdag interface on the screen.
Point to the list of modules On the left-hand side, we can see the list of modules.
Point toward the Connection module and Tension Member module The current version of Osdag is shipped with,
  • The Connection, and
  • The Tension Member module


Cursor near the modules. The remaining modules will be released with subsequent versions of Osdag.

Click on the Connection button. Click on the Connection button to open the module.

Point toward Shear Connection The first tab is the Shear Connection tab.
Point toward Shear Connection. By default, the landing page is on the Shear Connection tab.
Click on the Moment Connection tab The second tab is the Moment Connection tab.
Click on the Base Plate tab The third tab is the Base Plate tab, and
Click on the Truss Connection tab The fourth tab is the Truss Connection tab.
Cursor near the Truss Connection tab. The Truss Connection module is not available with this version of Osdag.

Point toward the Fin Plate, Cleat Angle, End Plate and Seated Angle image Let us look at the types of Shear Connection module. They are,
  • Fin Plate
  • Cleat Angle
  • End Plate, and
  • Seated Angle

Click on the Fin Plate image Click on the Fin Plate image to select the module, then
Click on the Start button Click the Start button below, to load the module.

We see the design window GUI of the Fin Plate Shear Connection module.
Only narration Let us perform a sample design example to explore various functionalities of Osdag.

Click on File>> Load input

Go to the File menu present at the top left corner, and select Load input.
Open Design Window:

Browse to the Code file directory

Browse to Code file directory.
Open Design Window:

Select the FinPlate_sample_design.osi file and click on Open

Select FinPlate_sample_design.osi and

Click the Open button.

Click on the Design button

Click on the Design button at the bottom to create the design.

Point towards the CAD window and the Log messages window

The design is successful as the CAD model and log messages are displayed.

Point toward the Input Dock

On the left side, we see the Input Dock.

The Input Dock is used to give user inputs pertaining to the module.
Input Dock:

Click on any drop-down list

Click on any text box

It has a combination of drop-down lists, and text boxes.
Only narration The inputs are validated dynamically based on the codal provisions.

Point toward Connectivity, Factored Loads, Bolt, and Plate

The Input Dock has user input fields for
  • Connectivity
  • Factored Loads
  • Bolt, and
  • Plate


Cursor on the input fields. These input fields are custom to the Fin Plate Shear Connection module.
Only narration The input fields will change dynamically depending on the module type and category.
Input Dock:

Click on the Reset button

The Reset button at the bottom is used to reset the selected input values to default.
Point toward the Output Dock and CAD window This clears the design outputs and CAD.
Only narration Let us reload the inputs.

Click on File>> Load input

Go to the File menu and select Load input.
Open Design Window:

Browse to the Code file directory

Browse to the Code file directory.
Open Design Window:

Select the FinPlate_sample_design.osi file and click on Open

Select FinPlate_sample_design.osi and


Click the Open button.

Input Dock:

Click on the Design button

Click on the Design button.

This button is used to run the design.

Output Dock:

Point toward the Output Dock

On the right side of the window, we can see the Output Dock.
Output Dock:

Point toward the Bolt and Plate output values in the Output Dock

Outputs for a given design are detailed in this Output Dock for interpretation.
Output Dock:

Point toward the Save Output button

At the bottom of the Output Dock, we see the Save Output button.
Point toward the Save Output button. It allows us to save the design outputs in a text file.
Output Dock:

Point toward the Create Design Report button

Above the Save Output button, we see the Create Design Report button.
Point toward the Create Design Report button It allows us to export the design report as PDF.
Only narration We will learn how to create and interpret design reports in another tutorial.
Graphics window:

Point toward the Graphics window

The window at the centre is the 3D Graphics window.

Rotate the 3D model in the Graphics window

The Graphics window displays the 3D CAD model of the module for visualisation.

Only narration We will learn to handle the 3D CAD model in another tutorial.
Message window:

Point toward the Log message window

Log messages pertaining to a design session are displayed in the Log message window.

Highlight the log message

It displays colour-coded messages in the form of ERRORS, WARNINGS and INFO.
log Message window. It also gives suggestions to arrive at a safe design to a novice user.
Only narration We will see how to use these logs to rectify unsafe designs in another tutorial.

Click on the hide-unhide Input/Output Dock buttons

There is a hide-unhide toggle above the Graphics window.

This toggle is used to hide and unhide the Input and the Output docks respectively.

Click on the ZX and ZY 2D view buttons.

Point to the tooltips.

The 2D view buttons at the top display the 2D view of the CAD model.

The tooltips show the views.

Fin Plate Connection GUI:

Click on the Beam, Column and fin plate check-box

The component checkbox displays an isolated 3D view of each component individually.
Only narration This allows us to visualise minute details of the connection.

The Output Dock on the right side displays the relevant design outputs.

On the top left side of the GUI, we can see a menu bar.


It has menu options for

  • File
  • Edit
  • Graphics
  • Database, and
  • Help

Click on the Database menu Click on the Database menu.

The steel sections database of Osdag can be downloaded using the Download menu.

Database for Column, Beam, Angle and Channel sections can be downloaded separately

Users can edit the database to add custom sections and upload it back to Osdag.
