00:01 Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on User Roles in Moodle.
00:06 In this tutorial, we will learn how to: assign admin role to a user,
00:13 assign a teacher to a course and enrol a student in a course.
00:20 This tutorial is recorded using: Ubuntu Linux OS 16.04,
00:28 Apache, MariaDB and PHP obtained through XAMPP 5.6.30,

Moodle 3.3 and Firefox web browser.

00:42 You can use any web browser of your choice.

However, Internet Explorer should be avoided as it causes some display inconsistencies.

00:54 Learners of this tutorial should have some courses created on their Moodle website.
01:01 If not, please refer to the previous Moodle tutorials on this website.
01:08 Switch to the browser and login to your Moodle website using your admin username and password.
01:16 We are now in the admin dashboard.
01:19 Let us go to the Course and Category Management page.
01:24 Make sure you have these courses on your Moodle interface.

If not, pause the tutorial to create them and then resume.

01:34 Let us view all the users that we created.
01:38 Click on Site Administration.
01:41 Then click on the Users tab.
01:44 Under the Accounts section, click on Browse list of users.
01:50 We now have 4 users.
01:53 Let’s click on the user Priya Sinha and edit her profile.
01:59 So, click on Edit Profile link in the User details section.
02:04 Scroll down and locate the Optional section.

Then click on it to expand it.

02:11 Notice that the fields Institution, Department, Phone and Address are populated.

These are the ones we entered in the CSV file.

02:23 Let’s go back to the list of users again.

To do so, click on Site Administration -> Users -> Browse list of users.

02:33 Let us assign administrator role to this user, System Admin2.
02:39 On the left menu, click on Site Administration and then on the Users tab.
02:46 Scroll down to the Permissions section and click on Site Administrators.
02:52 There are 2 set of users here.

First set has the names of the current site administrators and the second set has the list of all other users.

03:05 In between the two lists, there are buttons to perform various actions.
03:11 From the Users box, let’s click on System Admin2 user.
03:17 If there are too many users, use the Search box below the Users box for searching.

And then, click on the Add button.

03:26 In the Confirm box, click on Continue button.
03:30 There are 2 admin users now.

We can have as many admin users as we want.

03:38 However, there can be only one Main administrator.

The Main administrator can never be deleted from the system.

03:48 Let us now assign Rebecca Raymond as the teacher for the Calculus course.
03:55 To do this, go to the Course and category management page, as shown here.
04:02 Click on 1st Year Maths subcategory to see the courses under it.
04:09 Click on the Calculus course. Scroll down to see details of the course.

Click on Enrolled Users.

04:19 We can see that the user Priya Sinha has been enrolled to this course.
04:25 We did this through the upload user CSV.
04:29 In Moodle, everyone, including the teacher, needs to be enrolled to the course.
04:35 The new role to be assigned to them depends on their current role in the course.
04:41 Click on Enrol users button either at the top right or bottom right.
04:48 A pop-up window opens.
04:51 It has a dropdown for Assign roles, fields for Enrolment options and a Search button.
05:00 We can see a list of all the users, currently not assigned to this course.
05:06 In the Assign roles dropdown, select Teacher.
05:11 Then click on the Enrol button, next to Rebecca Raymond.
05:16 Lastly, click on Finish Enrolling users button at the bottom of the page.
05:24 Students can be assigned to a course in a similar manner.
05:28 To un-assign Rebecca Raymond from her Teacher role, click on the Trash icon in the Roles column.
05:36 In the Confirm Role Change popup box, click on Remove button.
05:42 The Assign role icon here, can also be used for assigning a role to already enrolled users.
05:50 Click on it to open a small pop-up window with all role names.
05:56 Click on Teacher to assign teacher role to Rebecca Raymond.

The box closes on its own.

06:04 Users can be un-enrolled from a course by clicking on the trash icon at the extreme right.
06:11 The gear icon towards the right, is for editing the user enrolment details.

Click on it.

06:20 This has an option to suspend the user and change the enrolment start and end dates.
