Panels and Settings in Panels

00:40 To follow this tutorial, learner should be familiar with Marble interface.
00:46 For the prerequisite Marble tutorials, please visit this site.
00:52 I have already opened the Marble interface.
00:56 Let us drag the boundary to see the left panel clearly.
01:01 We will begin with Search panel.
01:04 Using this panel we can search different places on the globe.
01:09 Next we have Location. Click on it.
01:14 This panel shows location and position tracking of a place.
01:20 Let us click on Routing panel.
01:23 This panel shows possible routes and gives driving instructions.
01:28 Then we have Map View panel.
01:31 It has a Globe view and a drop-down to show various views.
01:36 Globe View is the default view.
01:39 It shows a 3D model of the Earth.
01:42 Next to the Globe view, we have a drop down button.
01:46 Click on the drop down button
01:49 This drop down button has a combination of 2D and 3D Views of the Earth.
01:55 For example, Mercator View and Flat view are 2D views.
02:03 Gnomonic view, Stereographic view and others are 3d views.
02:14 Details about each of these views are available in the Additional material link of this tutorial.
02:22 Let us go back to the default view.
02:25 In the Earth drop-down button, we have Earth and Moon views.

Click on the Moon view.

02:33 This is the moon’s view.
02:36 Let me zoom in and rotate the moon.
02:39 We can see bright and dark regions on the surface of the moon.
02:44 Bright region is called Lunar highlands.
02:48 Dark regions are called Mare.
02:52 Apart from these we can also see the satellites like Apollo 12, Apollo 14, Apollo 16 and others.
03:02 We will learn more about the Moon’s view in the upcoming tutorials.
03:07 Click on the Moon drop down and select Earth.
03:12 Marble has various Map views of the Earth.
03:16 Atlas is the default Map view.
03:19 I will scroll down to show different Map views.
03:22 Let us click on each of these Map views to see them on the right panel.
03:28 OpenStreetMap, Satellite view, Earth at Night and others.
03:43 Let us go back to the default Map view.
03:47 Next panel is Legend. Click on it.
03:52 This panel contains symbols that show different features on the map.
03:58 For example,

Populated places

04:02 Urban areas
04:04 Terrain
04:06 Places of interest
04:09 Boundaries and others.
04:16 The symbols used to represent a feature in all maps are universal.
04:21 For example, rivers are always represented by blue lines.
04:26 If we see black and red triangles in a location, it means that the place has mountains and volcanoes.
04:36 In addition to these default panels, Marble has 3 more panels.
04:41 Those panels are hidden by default.
04:45 Hidden panels are available in the Settings menu.
04:49 Click on the Settings menu and select Panels.
04:53 A sub-menu shows all the panels.
04:57 Here we can see that Routing, Location, Search, Map view and Legend panels are selected by default.
05:09 Files, Edit Maps and Tour panels are not selected.
05:16 Let me show these 3 panels by clicking them one by one.

Click on Files.

05:24 Again go to Settings menu and select Panels.

Click on Edit Maps.

05:33 Similarly I will open the Tour panel.
05:39 Notice that all the panels are seen on the interface.
05:44 Let us go to Edit Maps and click on it. Using this panel we can edit maps.
05:52 This panel has Add Placemark, Add Polygon, Add Path, Add Ground Overlay and other icons.
06:04 Next is Tour panel. Click on it.
06:09 This panel gives quick access of our search history on the map.
06:15 It has New Tour, Open Tour, Save Tour, and other icons.
06:22 Now click on Files panel.
06:25 Files panel contains the databases of the Marble.
06:29 It has a collection of GeoData documents.
06:33 GeoData document means geographic datasets of various types available in a common file.
06:41 Let me scroll down to show the Geodata documents.
06:46 It has the database of cities, mountains, volcanoes and oceans.
06:54 As an Assignment

Locate mountains in Africa and Europe.
