We will discuss each one of them in detail. | |
Open “Personal-Finance-Tracker.ods” | Let us open our “Personal-Finance-Tracker.ods” spreadsheet. |
Select sheet 2. | First, let us select sheet 2.
We will insert images in this sheet. |
It is a good practice to select a cell and then insert pictures. | |
Click on “Insert” >> select “Picture” >> click on “From File”. | If an image is already stored on your computer, you can insert it by first clicking on “Insert”
and then “Picture” and selecting “From File”. |
Go To Desktop
Click on the “Images” folder >> Point to the images. Next click on “Image1”file. |
Now locate the image you want to insert.
I have already stored some images on the Desktop in a folder named “Images”. So, I will choose “Image1”. |
Point to the “Location” field and the filename.
|
We will see the name of the image in the “Location” field .
Click on the “Open” button |
Point to the image inserted in the file. | Observe that the image appears in the spreadsheet. <pause>

Let us insert another picture by Linking it. | |
Select a new cell. Ensure that the cell you select is not next to image 1 or it will overlap.
Click on “Insert” >> select “Picture” >> click on “From File”. <<Select another image not the roses image>> |
First let us select a new cell.
Now, let’s click on “Insert” and “Picture” and select “From File”. Let us select another image. |
Click on “Image 2” | Now click on “Image 2”. |
Put a check on “Link” option
click “Open” |
To link the image to your document, check the “Link”option and click “Open”. |
In the dialog box that appears >> click on “Keep Link” button.
<Pause for 2 secs> |
In the dialog box that appears, click on “Keep Link” button. |
Point to the linked file. | The picture is now linked to the file. |

When we link a file:

Let us change the color of Image 2, which is linked to the file to greyscale. |
Switch to Calc | I am using the picture editor GIMP to edit this picture.
You can use any editor that is installed on your machine. |

Point to the picture. | Image 2 opens in GIMP. |
Using GIMP change the color to Grayscale. | Now let us change the picture from color to greyscale. |
Save and close the image. | Now, let’s save and close the image. |
Open Personal-Finance-Tracker.ods. | Let us open the Personal-Finance-Tracker.ods. |
Point that the image is displayed in grey scale. | Image 2 is now displayed in greyscale. |

Disadvantage of linking
the spreadsheet as well as the image file

However, one major Disadvantage of linking the file is that

Move this image to the right of the spreadsheet | Let’s move this image to the right of the spreadsheet |
Switch to the Ubuntu Desktop >> Double-click on the “Images” folder >> click on “Image 3” file. | <pause>
Another method of inserting images into a spreadsheet is by dragging it from its folder where you have stored the image and dropping it on your spreadsheet. |
Let us drag and drop an image. | |
Drag and drop “Image 3” into the spreadsheet on the left side. | Now drag and drop the image file directly into your spreadsheet wherever you want to place it. |
Point to the image in the spreadsheet.

You will see that the image gets inserted into your document.
Let’s undo this change by pressing CTRL and Z. |
Click on the image in the folder again.
Press and hold “Control +Shift” while dragging the image to the spreadsheet. |
Now let us link the image using the drag and drop method.
This is easy too! Just press and hold the “Control” and “Shift” keys while dragging the image into the spreadsheet. |
Point to the “Image 3”. | The image file is now linked to the document. |
Press CTRL and S keys together.
Click Close button to close the Calc file. |
Let’s save this Calc file by pressing CTRL and S keys together.
Now let’s close this file. |
Open the folder “Images” on the Desktop. | Now let’s go to the folder where the image is located. |
Rename the image “Image 3.jpg” as “Image4.jpg”. | Let’s rename the image “Image 3.jpg”, that we inserted in the file to “Image4.jpg”. |
Open “Personal Finance Tracker.ods” | Now open the “Personal Finance Tracker.ods” file again. |
Point to the blank area where the image is disappeared. | You can see that the linked image is no longer visible!
The linked path shows an error! |
Delete the link from the document. | Let us delete this link. |

Assignment Insert an image as a link in a Calc sheet, save and close it. Now, go the folder where the image is stored and delete the image. Open check if the image is still visible in the Calc file. Now paste the image back into the image folder. Check if the image is visible in the Calc file. |

Point to the “Picture” toolbar below the “Standard” toolbar. | Notice a new toolbar just below the “Standard” toolbar. This is the “Picture” toolbar. |
Click on the “Filter” button >> Point to the different options >> Click on “Invert” option. |
The “Filter” button at the top left of the “Picture” toolbar gives several options
to change the look of the image. <pause> Let’s undo this by pressing CTRL and Z. |
Click on the “Graphics mode” button and point to all the options listed. | The “Graphics mode” button has options to change the image into grayscale, black-and-white or as a watermark. |
Point to the other options. | There are other options on the “Picture” toolbar which we will cover later. |
Next we will learn how to insert image from a clipboard. | |
One can copy images stored on the clipboard, from one LibreOffice spreadsheet to another. | |
Create a new spreadsheet and name it “abc.ods”. | Lets create a new spreadsheet and name it as “abc.ods”.
This is our target document. |
Switch to “Personal-Finance-Tracker.ods” file | We already have an image in our “Personal-Finance-Tracker.ods” file.
This is our source document. |
Select image “Image1” from “Personal-Finance-Tracker.ods” | Now select the image from the source file which is to be copied. |
Press “Control” and “C” keys together | Press “CTRL” and “C” keys together to copy the image.
The image is now saved on the clipboard. |
Switch to “abc.ods”. | Now switch to the target document, which is “abc.ods”. |
Select any suitable cell location. | Select the location where you wish to place your saved image in “abc.ods”. |
Press “Control +V” keys together | Now press “CTRL” and “V” keys together to insert the image into the document. |
Point to the inserted image. | We see that the image is inserted into our target file.

Now we will learn how to insert images directly from the Calc Gallery. | |
Point to the Gallery icon | “Gallery” has image as well as sounds which you can insert into your spreadsheet. |
Switch to “Personal-Finance-Tracker.ods” | Let’s see how to do this. |
Click on the “Gallery” icon in the standard toolbar.
Click on “Tools”>> Point to the “Gallery” |
Click on the “Gallery” icon in the standard toolbar.
Alternately, click on “Tools” option in the menu bar and then click on “Gallery” to open it. |
Click on the second background tile. |
Now go through the images which the “Gallery” provides and click on the image you want to insert into your document. |
Drag and drop image on a suitable cell. | Drag the image from the “Gallery”
and drop it into the spreadsheet where you want to insert it. |
