Show Koha login interface | Let us switch to the Koha interface. |
Username as Bella and Password as Library@1.
Click on Log in |
To add a new item type, we have to login as superlibrarian.
So, I will type the username as Bella and the password as Library@1. For the library field, from the drop down select Spoken Tutorial Library. Now click on the Login button. If you had given a different username and password, then type that. |
Show Koha staff Interface | This will lead us to the Koha staff interface. |

Item types are typically refered to the material in the library, such as

Item Type Code

Every Item type code in Koha has a Collection code assigned to it.
This code uniquely identifies that Item type. |

Show Koha interface >> Koha Administration | For that, click on the Koha Administration module. |
Highlight Koha Administration
Go to the section Basic parameters Click on- Item types |
The Koha Administration page opens.
Now go to the Basic parameters section and click on Item types. |
Item types page | Item type page opens. |
Click the + New Item Type at the top of the Item types administration page. | Click on the add New Item Type button on the top of the page. |

Point to the red asterisk fields | On this page, all the fields in red are mandatory. |
Red box highlight on Item type | In the Item type field, enter a code for the new Item type. |
Type REF | I will type R E F. |
Parent item type | For now, we will leave the Parent item type field as it is. |
Red box highlight on Description field | The Description field is the description of the item type. |
Type Reference | So here, I will type Reference. |
Leave Search category field | We will leave the Search category field as it is. |
Cursor on Choose an icon: | Next is to Choose an icon. |
Click on the tab bridge | I will click on the tab bridge to select an icon for Reference. |
Highlight the icons | From the below-given options, select the icon associated with the item type. |
Select Reference icon | We will select this as the Reference icon. |
Point to Hide in OPAC: option | Next, the option is Hide in OPAC. |

Hide in OPAC This option is useful when the book is in-

Let’s say a book is:

Point to Hide in OPAC: | As per the requirement, check or uncheck the checkbox for Hide in OPAC.
Here, we will leave the checkbox blank. |
Point to Not for loan | Use Not for loan option for items that are kept in the library but not circulated.
For example,

Check Not for loan | I will check this field, as most of the time reference books cannot be issued. |
Scroll down and Point to Automatic check-in | Now, scroll down to Automatic check-in.
We will leave the checkbox blank. If checked, items will automatically check in upon reaching their due date. |

As most of these items don’t require a rental fee, I am leaving the fields as it is.
If you wish to enter a fee, then remember to enter a valid number only. |

Next is the CheckIn message: text field.
Checkin message depends on the type of the particular item. The options could be-

This is followed by the CheckIn message type.
Depending upon the item type, select a message or an alert for the item. Based on the selected option, a message or an alert will appear during check-in. |
CheckIn message type Select message from the drop-down. | For CheckIn message type, from the drop-down select message, if not selected. |
Cursor on SIP media type | Next is SIP media type.
SIP media type applies only if a sorter or a locker facility is used in a library. I am skipping SIP media type. |
Cursor on Library limitations select Spoken Tutorial Library | For Library limitations field, select Spoken Tutorial Library. |
Point to Summary field. | Now scroll down to the Summary field.
Here, we can write a summary of the respective item, if we want to. I will leave it blank. |
Click on the Save changes button. | Lastly, click on the Save changes button. |

Highlight Item type inserted successfully. |
This will bring us back to the Item types page.
The text highlighted in blue at the top says Item type inserted successfully. |
Run the cursor through-
Code, Description, Not for loan, Hide in OPAC, Charge, Chekin message |
All the details that were filled for the new item type appear in a tabular form. |
