00:01 Welcome to the spoken tutorial on how to add an Item type in the Koha interface.
00:08 In this tutorial, we will learn about Item types and how to add an Item type.
00:17 To record this tutorial, I am using:

Ubuntu Linux Operating System 16.04 and

Koha version 16.05.

00:30 To follow this tutorial, learner should have knowledge of Library Science.
00:36 To practice this tutorial, you should have Koha installed on your system.
00:42 And, You should have Admin access in Koha. If not, please refer to the Koha spoken tutorial series on this website.
00:52 Let us begin. Let me switch to the Koha interface.
00:58 Recall that we had created a Superlibrarian Bella.
01:03 We will now login with username Bella and her password.
01:08 Now we are inside the Koha interface as Superlibrarian Bella.
01:14 Before we move ahead, let’s first understand what are Item Types.
01:20 Item types typically refer to the material in the library, such as-

Books, Journals, CDs/DVDs etc.

01:31 Every Item type in Koha has a Collection code assigned to it.
01:37 This code uniquely identifies that Item type.
01:42 Let us learn to add a new item type.
01:46 On the Koha Home page, click on Koha Administration.
01:52 Go to the section Basic parameters and click on Item Types.
01:59 Click the ' New Item Type' button at the top of the Item types administration page.
02:06 In the Item type field, enter a code for the new item type that you want to add.
02:13 I will type REF.
02:17 The Description field is the description of the item type.
02:22 So here, I will type "Reference". I will skip Search category field.
02:30 Next is Choose an icon:.
02:33 Click on the tab bridge .
02:37 Here, from the below given options, click on the icon to be associated with the item type.
02:45 I will select this Reference icon.
02:49 Next, we will learn how Hide in OPAC: helps.
02:54 Let’s say a book is damaged and/or has to be kept back for binding purpose.
03:02 In such cases, the option Hide in OPAC, will make the book invisible to all the users.
03:11 As per your requirement, check or uncheck the checkbox for Hide in OPAC:. I will leave the checkbox blank.
03:21 Use the 'Not for loan' option for items which are kept in the library but not circulated.
03:29 For e.g : Reference books, Rare books , Dictionary etc.
03:36 I will leave this check-box blank.
03:40 You may enter an amount to be charged in the Rental charge field, if you wish to.

Particular items in the library may have to be charged a minimum rental fee.

03:51 I will not enter any fee, as rental fee is not required to be charged on most items.
04:00 If you wish to enter a fee, then remember to enter a valid number only.
04:07 Next is the 'Checkin message:' text field.
04:11 Checkin message depends on the type of the particular item.
04:16 The options could be- Book , Serial, Cds/DVDs, Bound Volume, Microfilm etc.
04:26 In the field Checkin message:, I will type Bound Volume.
04:32 This is followed by Checkin message type:.
04:36 Depending upon the item type, select a message or an alert for the item.
04:42 Remember, as per the selected option a message or an alert will be displayed when check-ins are done for this particular item.
04:53 I will select- message.
04:56 Next is SIP media type.

SIP media type applies only if a sorter or a locker facility is being used in your library.

05:07 So here, I’am skipping SIP media type.
05:11 In the Summary field, write a summary of the respective item , if you want to.
05:18 I will type-

Item type- Reference

Facilitate- Self check out/return.

05:25 Lastly, click on Save changes button.
05:30 A new page Item types administration opens up.
05:35 All the details that were filled for the new item type, appear in a tabular form on the page Item types administration.
05:45 Some important things to note are-
05:49 Collection codes assigned to item types cannot be edited.
05:54 Description of the item type can be edited. Once an item type is used by items in the library, it cannot be deleted.
06:05 This brings us to the end of this tutorial.
06:08 Let us summarize.
