Welcome to this Spoken Tutorial on “3D Drawing of headphone” using Inkscape.

Learning Objectives

In this tutorial we will,

  • Import a headphone’s picture into Inkscape

  • Use Circle tool, Difference and Union options to create the speaker’s cups and cushions

  • Use Bezier tool to create headband of the headphone

  • Create shadows and light using Gradient tool to bring depth to the drawing

  • Create a 3D realistic drawing of a headphone

To record this tutorial, I am using

  • Mac OS

  • Inkscape version 1.2.2

To understand this tutorial, basic knowledge of Inkscape techniques are needed.

Code Files

The image used in this tutorial is given in the Code Files link.

Please download and extract the file.

Make a copy and then use it while practising.

Open Inkscape Let us open Inkscape.

File >> Document Properties >> Orientation >> Select the Landscape Orientation

Click on Close button(X)

Go to File and click on Document Properties.

In the dialog box, select Landscape Orientation.

Close the Document Properties dialog box.

Go to File. Click on Save.

In the Save dialog box type the filename as 3D-drawing-of-headphone.svg

Click on Save button.

Let us save the file now.

Go to File. Click on Save.

In the Save dialog box type the filename as 3D-drawing-of-headphone.svg.

Click on Save button.

Remember to save the file in between.

File >> Import >> Select file to import >> Desktop >> Select the file >> Click on Open

Go to File and click on Import.

In the dialog box Select file to import.

Go to the location on your computer where the image is saved.

Select File and click on Open.

Jpeg image bitmap import window opens.

Click on Ok >> Close the dialog box>>Point out imported image.

Jpeg image bitmap import window opens.

Click the Ok button to close the window.

Now, the image is loaded on the canvas.

Scale and adjust the reference image.

Go to the Layers panel.

>> Double click on the selected Layer>> Rename the name as ‘Reference’

Go to the Layers panel.

Double click on the selected Layer and rename the layer as ‘Reference’.

Point out imported image>> Menu bar>> Click on Object >>Click on Fill and Stroke

It is for reference so you can decrease the Opacity.

To decrease the opacity, go to the Object menu from Menu Bar. Click on Fill and Stroke.

Fill tab >> Change Opacity. Go to Fill tab and change the Opacity as shown.
Layers panel>>Click on lock icon.

The reference image must be retained as a reference as long as you work.

Go to the Layers panel. Click the lock icon to lock the reference image layer.

Add a Separate Layer

Please remember to add a separate layer for each part of the drawing.

Rename the layer with a proper name.

e.g. Speaker’s cushion-left, Speaker’s cushion-right, Headband and others.

Toolbar >> Select the Circle tool>>Canvas>> Draw a circle>> Fill >> Opacity Change the value to 100.

From the toolbox, Select the Circle tool.

On the layer of the Speaker cushion left. Draw a circle.

Please ensure that the Opacity value is set to 100.

Canvas Draw a circle>>Fill>> Remove the fill>> Scale >> Rotate

Go to Fill tab and remove the Fill.

Make sure the Stoke option is selected in the Fill and stroke tab.

Scale it and rotate.

Canvas>> Duplicate circle >> select one of the duplicated circles >>Scale and adjust>> Select remaining one of the duplicated circles drag and adjust

To make the inside part of the speaker's cushion, adjust the circle as shown.

Duplicate the drawn circle twice.

Select one of the duplicated circles.

Drag and adjust it as shown.

Canvas>>Path>> Click on Difference

Now, select the shifted circle and remaining duplicated circle.

Go to the Path and click on Difference.

Canvas >>Duplicate the remaining one of the duplicated circle>>Scale, rotate and adjust

To create the front part of the speaker's cushion.

Duplicate the remaining circle again.

Scale, rotate and adjust as shown.

Canvas>>Duplicate the adjusted circle twice>> Move and adjust one of the duplicated circles >> Select the adjusted circle and the remaining duplicated circle.

Now, create the middle part of the speaker's cushion.

Duplicate the adjusted circle twice.

Move and adjust one of the duplicated circles as demonstrated.

Select the adjusted circle and the remaining duplicated circle.

Path>> Click on Union Go to Path and click on Union.
Canvas>> Editing nodes Adjust circles by editing the nodes as demonstrated.

Canvas>> Duplicate the edited shape twice

>>Select one of the duplicated shape

>>Move and adjust as demonstrated.

To make the cushion's backside, duplicate the edited shape twice.

Select one of the duplicated shapes.

Move and adjust as demonstrated.

Please keep the shape from which we want to get the difference behind the current shape.
Canvas>>Select edited shape and one of the duplicated shape>> Path >> Click on Difference>>

Select the moved shape and the remaining duplicated shape.

Go to Path and click on Difference.

Canvas

To make the speaker’s cup, duplicate the shape resulting from the difference.

And adjust as shown.

Follow the same process to make the remaining parts of the speaker’s cup.

Cursor on the Canvas.

Now, add new layers to the right side speaker’s cushion and speaker’s cup.

Create the speaker’s cushion and speaker’s cup on the right side as before.

Toolbar >> Bezier tool>> Canvas>>Draw headband
  • Go to Toolbar. Select the Bezier tool.

Using the Bezier tool let us draw the various parts of the headband.

Layer panel>> Select reference image >> Canvas>>Move, scale and adjust >>

Fill and Stroke >> Opacity

After all the parts are drawn, select the reference image layer.

Click on the lock icon to unlock the layer.

Go to Canvas.

Move, scale and adjust the reference image.

Make sure to increase the opacity to 100 before adding colors.

Canvas>>Select shape one by one>>Fill colors>> Layers panel>> Arrange layers

Select the shapes of the speaker’s cushion, speaker’s cup, and headband one by one.

Fill the color by picking a suitable color from the reference image as shown.

Go to the Layers panel.

Arrange layers from the Layers panel while filling colors as demonstrated.

Canvas>> Select all parts of the drawing>> Stroke paint>>Click on No paint>> Canvas>> point towards the gap

Select all parts of the drawing

Go to the Stroke paint tab.

Click on No paint to remove the outlines from drawing.

Check the gaps between the shapes and adjust them.

Canvas >> Fill the Linear Gradient using Gradient tool

Select the shapes of the speaker’s cushion, speaker’s cup, and headband one by one.

Apply the Linear gradient by picking a suitable color from the reference image.

Adjust the gradient as demonstrated.

You can use Linear gradient or Radial gradient as per the requirement.

This method helps to create depth and gives 3D realistic drawing.

Canvas For more details, create shadows and highlights using the Bezier tool.
FIll>> Increase Blur value>> Layers panel>> Hide reference layer by clicking on eye icon

Now, go to the Fill tab.

Increase the Blur value for merging two colors as needed.

Add more details as applicable.

To hide the reference image, go to the Layers panel

Click on the eye icon of the reference image layer.

Canvas

Add a shadow and a background.

Now the 3D drawing of the headphone is ready.

Point to the headphone Similarly, you can create various other objects using this method.
