Time Manager and Reminder using Freeplane.

In this tutorial, we will learn to,
  • Associate a date with a node
  • Add a reminder to a node
  • Set date and time for the reminder and
  • Turn off the reminder

System Requirement

To record this tutorial, I am using
  • Ubuntu Linux v16.04 OS and
  • Freeplane v1.7.10

Show the files on Desktop. I have saved the input files on Desktop.
Open reminder.mm from Desktop directory. Open reminder dot mm file.
Cursor on the map. The map opens in Freeplane.

This map is used by a teacher, who is organizing a star gazing trip.

Cursor on the map. Let’s associate date, time and reminder with a node.
Hover mouse on children of the Examination node. The Examination node in the map has several children.

They list the checklist for conducting the examination.

Show Examination node. Let’s associate a particular time with the Examination node.

Then, demonstrate how we can adapt it to daily chores.

Select the Examination node.

Right click to open the context menu.

Select the Examination node and right-click to open the context menu.
Select Edit attribute in-line.

Select the left column of attribute.

Select the Edit attribute in-line to add an attribute.

An attribute with 2 columns and one row appears below the node.

Select the left column. Select the left column of the attribute.
Type, Date in the left column. Type Date in the left column.

The examination is to be held on 30th October 2020.

Open Tool panel and select the Calendar tab. Open the Tool panel and select the Calendar tab.

Notice a calendar and options to add date and reminder.

Calendar shows time in the computer. Notice the current date and time as seen in the computer clock.

Choose Dates as per Convenience

  • The practise date of this tutorial will be varied.
  • Learner must select dates ahead of their time for practising.
  • Select a date of your choice.
Select the right column. Using the arrows in the calendar to choose 30 October 2020.
Hover mouse next to time. (above the reset button). Time can be set using the time drop-down.
Set hour to 9.00.

Use up and down arrows to set time.

Let’s assume, the examination starts at ten AM.

Set time to 9:45. I will set the time a little ahead of 10.00, at 9.45 AM for reminder.
Click on the pulldown, below the Reset calendar option. Click on the pulldown, below the Reset calendar option.
Choose the 4th option. Notice the different styles available here.

I will choose the 4th option for style.

Select the right column of the attribute. Select the right column, to add the examination date in the right column.
Click on insert date in selection. Click on Insert Date in selection.

The date appears in the column of the attribute.

Now we have associated a date with this node.

Cursor on the field trip node and select it. Study of stars in the night sky, is part of the examination.

Let's select the Field trip, sky gazing node.

Show the attributes. A field trip is organized, to watch the night sky.
Go to Field trip, sky gazing node.

Hover mouse over attributes

The node has listed a few organizer capabilities.

They are added as attributes.

Cursor next to the dates in the attribute. If the dates are set in the past for you, please change to future dates for practice.
Select the Field trip, sky gazing node. Choose the right column in the attribute, where the date is entered.
Hover mouse over the four attributes. There are four task lists in the four attributes.
Hover mouse over Deadline to register. First task is the Deadline to register for the trip.
Select the date associate with the attribute in the calendar. Click on the required date on the calendar, that is on the 25th of September.
Select the right column in the attribute. Select the right column in the attribute.
Click on Remind me at this date. Click on Remind me at this date.
Cursor next to the clock icon. The reminder sets off an alarm at the specified time in Freeplane.

Notice that a clock appears next to the node.

Cursor on the time. Since our time is different, the alarm will not go off now and we cannot see it.
Hover mouse on the clock icon. We have to wait till 25th September 2020 to see the alarm start.

Let’s set the reminder to the current date and time, to see how the reminder works.

Choose the right column in the attribute. I will choose the time of recording this tutorial as seen in the computer clock.

Press Del to remove the date. Let’s remove the date here.
Click on the Reset Calendar. Click on Reset Calendar to update the current date and time of your computer.
Set the time and date on the computer 1-2 minutes ahead of the time in the computer. I will set the time a minute or two ahead to practice the reminder tool.
Click on insert date in selection. Click on insert date in selection.
Click on Remind me at this date. Now click on Remind me at this date
Click on Yes. Let’s click on Yes.
Hover mouse on the clock icon. This will allow the reminder to switch on within 1-2 minutes in the map.
Hide Tool panel and reposition the map. I will hide the tool panel and move the map to fit in the window.

Let’s wait and watch the map, till the computer time reaches the set alarm time.

Show alarm switching on. When the time is reached, the alarm goes off.

The clock icon starts to blink.

Show the alarm in the parent and root node also. Notice, the alarm going on in the parent node.

The parent and root nodes also have a blinking red exclamation sign.

Select root node, position cursor on the little circle on the right, right click and choose Fold all. Select the root node and fold all nodes as seen here.

It is visible, even when the map is folded.

Cursor over the blinking clock. This feature helps to draw the attention of the user to the reminder.
Unfold all the nodes in the map. Unfold all the nodes in the map.

Show the reminded associated node.

We can follow this path to reach the node associated with the reminder.
Select the right column for the second attribute. Select the right column for the second attribute as seen here.
Open the Tool panel. Open the Tool panel.
Click on Remind later. Notice, that Remind later is set to 1 day.

I will not change it and click on Remind later.

Cursor on the clock icon. The time gets reset to a day ahead and the clock icon stops to blink.
Hide the Tool panel and fit the map to the window. I will hide the Tool panel and move the map to fit in the window.
Show full map without exclamation mark. The red exclamation marks disappear from the ancestor nodes.
Cursor on the clock icon. On the next day, the reminder alarm goes off again.

This reminds the teacher on the next task in the attributes.

Open the Tool panel and fit the map in the window. Open the Tool panel and move the map to fit in the window.
Let’s select the Field trip, sky gazing node. Reminder can be removed from the node it is associated with.

Click on Remove reminder. Click on Remove reminder to remove the reminder.
Cursor on the map. Users can create reminders to the nodes in the map.
Cursor on the map. Let’s save the map and quit Freeplane.
Press Ctrl + S.

Press Ctrl + Q.

Press Control-S to save the map.

Click on File, Quit Freeplane to quit Freeplane.
