  • FreeCAD version 0.21.1

Pre-requisites

To follow this tutorial,
  • Learners must be familiar with the FreeCAD interface.
  • For pre-requisite tutorials, please visit this site.


Open FreeCAD.

Go to Draft workbench,Top view and orthographic for setting.

Select Draw a Line tool.

Open FreeCAD.

Click on Create New to start a new file.

Go to Draft workbench.

Make sure the orthographic and top view are selected.


Then select the line tool.

Check the box for the continuous line option in combo view. Notice the changes in the Combo view panel.


Check the box for the continue option.

Cursor on the continue option. We can draw multiple discontinuous lines or continuous lines now.


We don’t have to select the line tool each time to draw a different line.

To demonstrate I will add a few lines.

Press the escape key. Several line objects are added on the combo view as we add more lines.


To exit this mode, press the escape key.

Select one of the lines and select the split tool. Next, select one of the lines and select the split tool.
Place the cursor on the line and left click.

Place the cursor on the line and left click to split the line at that point.


Notice the 2 line objects in the combo view panel.

Switch on 8 of the snap tools.

Next, let’s learn about snap tools in line drawings.


I will click on 8 of the snap tools as seen.


It is useful to keep them on as you progress in your drawing skills.

Next, let’s create a drawing to learn the options present in snap tools.
Choose the line tool and check the box for continue. Choose the line tool and check the box for continue.
Draw one horizontal line.


Check the snap end point tool and draw a line above and below it.

Let’s draw one horizontal line.


Check the snap end point tool and draw two lines.

Move the cursor to draw a line.

For this feature to be visible, the snap ortho tool is in the on mode.


Then we know that the line is horizontal.


Move the cursor to draw a line.

Video editing, highlight blue + symbol Notice the blue color + symbol, with the + symbol of the cursor.


The blue + symbol appears only when the line is horizontal or vertical.

Move the cursor close to the end of the line.

Move the cursor close to the end of the line.


Notice a White dot on the line and a blue guide.

Cursor on Continue in combo view. Since the Continue option is on, we can continue to draw line.


Let’s add labels on the line.


Notice the snap end-point is on in the snap tools.

Click on the text tool.


Move the cursor near the point to where the annotation is desired.

Click on the text tool.


Move the cursor near the point to where the annotation is desired.

Highlight the white dot (arrow or box) while editing.

Notice the White dot and left click.


A dialog box to type custom text appears on the left.

Cursor on the Data tab in the left panel. I will type A in this.

If you don’t see the label sign, go to the data tab and increase the font size.

Type A for text.

Now pause the video.


Repeat this procedure to label the other end of the line with C.

Notice that the snap mid-point is on.


We can also label the mid-point of the line in the same way.


Pause video and label the mid-point as B.

Click on the line tool.

Cursor on snap perpendicular. If it is not on, click on it.

Click on the line tool again and make sure the snap perpendicular is on.
Place the cursor on the canvas.


Move the cursor towards the line to see blue + sign.


Place the cursor on the canvas and move it towards the line.


When we see the blue ‘+’ sign, we know that the new line will be perpendicular.

Hover cursor near the possible intersection. Pause the video, and create a label called D, at this new line intersection.

Cursor on all other snap tools and turn them off.

Next let’s learn about snap intersection.


For this, we first have to turn off all other snap tools.

Move the cursor to near the intersection of the two lines. Move the cursor to near the intersection of the two lines.
Highlight the blue color cross.

The blue cross shows the intersection between the two lines.

Let’s create another line from the intersection point.

Left click and move the cursor.


HIghlight changes in the left panel in editing.

Left click and move the cursor.


Notice the line properties change in the left panel.

Type 45 for angle in the left panel and press the Enter key.

Type the angle to be 45 degrees and press the Enter key.


Notice the intersecting line at 45 degrees.

Move cursor to the end of both the lines and label E and F.


(This part will get shortened during video editing).

Pause the video and create two more labels of the remaining ends of the line.


I will label them E and F.

Click on the square tool.

Then draw a rectangle in canvas.

Let’s draw a rectangle next.
Cursor on the corner of the rectangle.


Cursor over fillet tool to show tooltip.


Edges and faces are often rounded off in engineering drawing.


This practice aid to reduce stress points and are called fillet or chamfer.

Click on downgrade twice to give individual edges.


Highlight the object changing to edges.

Rectangle is a closed loop single entity.


Hence, first downgrade the object to individual lines before fillet is applied.

Select two neighboring edges or lines.


Type 10 for fillet value and press the Enter key.

Next, select two neighboring edges or lines.

Click on fillet.

Change the fillet value to 10 mm and press the Enter key.

Cursor over the fillet. Notice the sharp edge is now smoothened over.


Notice that both the original object and the fillet are present now.

Again, select two adjacent lines, and click on fillet. Again, select two adjacent lines, and click on fillet.
Check the box for delete the original object. Next, check the box for delete the original object.
Type 12 in fillet form and press the Enter key. Enter 12 for fillet and notice that only filet remains.
Cursor on the next corner of the rectangle.


Click on the fillet tool.

Next, pick another set of adjacent lines in the rectangle.


Then choose the fillet tool.

Check the box for both chamfer and delete original object. This time, check the box for both chamfer and delete original object.
Cursor on fillet and chamfer. Notice that Chamfer is more smooth and rounded around the corner than fillet.
Select the lines of the fourth corner of the rectangle. Often we have to make angular measurements in the drawing.
Click on dimension. Click on dimension.
Press Shift+Alt Hold down Shift and Alt keys.


Notice the parameter changes in combo view.

Holding the keys down, select the two lines. Holding the keys down, select the two lines where the angle is to be measured.
Move the cursor between and outside the selected lines.


Show the arc flips - highlight in video.

We can measure the inside or outside dimension.


Move the cursor on the canvas between and outside the selected lines.


Notice the arc denoting the measurement also flips.

Left click once to measure the angle.


Release the SHIFT+ALT keys.

Left click once to measure the angle.


Only now, release the SHIFT and ALT keys.

Next, let’s learn to create a leader line.


Leader line aid to move annotation to a more suitable position in the canvas.

Click on the Label tool.


Choose a corner and left click.

Choose the Label tool.


Choose a corner on the rectangle and left click.


Notice the blue pointer when the cursor is close to the corner.

Drag the line to a side.


Click once and drag again to the side as seen.

Draw a line to a side.

Then drag the line to a side.


Click once and drag again to the side as seen.

Left click to accept the addition. Left click to accept the leader line.
Cursor next to label text. Notice the label text showing in the canvas.


Sometimes the Label does not show on the canvas.

First select the label line and click on the view tab. If so, first select the label line and click on the view tab.


Let’s change the size of the text on the canvas.

Scroll down in the View tab and to text properties.


Increase the text size.

Scroll down in the View tab and to text properties.


Increase the text size to a higher value, to show the label.

This value may be different for each of you.
In Combo view, go to Data tab. In Combo view, go to the Data tab.
Click on the Custom text form in the Label section.


Click on the Ellipsis symbol seen on the right side.

Cick on the Custom text form in the Label section.


Click on the Ellipsis seen on the right side.

In the List box, type, will type “Radius 10”.


Click on Ok.

A List dialog box opens.


I will type “R 10” and click on OK.


Some of you may not see the label update.

Cursor on Label value, which is not updated.


Click on the custom text form and then on the canvas.

Though the form value is updated, symbol does not appear on the canvas.


First click on the custom text form and then on the canvas to see the update.

As needed save your work and exit FreeCAD.
