00:01 Welcome to this overview spoken tutorial on DWSIM, an open source chemical process simulator.
00:07 My name is Kannan Moudgalya.
00:11 In this tutorial, we will:* learn to install DWSIM
00:15 Get introduced to DWSIM
00:18 Get a glimpse of DWSIM spoken tutorials that are already available
00:23 Learn about all possible help available for DWSIM.
00:28 Almost any operating system will work, but I am recording this tutorial in Windows 7.
00:34 What is simulation?
00:36 Study of a physical system with a mathematical model and a computer solution to this model.
00:43 Simulation helps predict the behavior of the physical system.
00:47 It is inexpensive, safe and fast.
00:51 It eliminates the need to do these studies on the real system.
00:56 Indian space missions are economical and done in a relatively short time.
01:02 One important reason is simulation.
01:05 Reliance Jamnagar was the world’s largest single stream refinery when started.
01:11 Put up in a short time, once again, thanks to simulation.
01:16 There are many commercial process simulators.
01:19 A few general purpose simulators are listed here.
01:23 What is DWSIM? It is a state of the art process simulator, Open source software, absolutely free, developed by Daniel Thermodynamic support by Gregor, used all over the world.
01:39 I will now explain how to install DWSIM in Windows 7.
01:45 Go to the link shown here.
01:50 I am already at this link. Click the Download button.
01:55 I have already done this.
01:57 I got this file.
02:00 It is in the Downloads directory.
02:02 Here it is.
02:04 The name of this file could be different, depending on its version.
02:10 Right click, Run as an administrator.
02:15 Click Next.
02:18 Click “I agree”
02:20 You want both Chemsep and C++ libraries.
02:24 Check both boxes.
02:27 Keep pressing Enter and DWSIM gets installed.
02:32 Using this procedure, I have already installed DWSIM.
02:36 So, I will cancel this installation process.
02:41 Click yes.
02:43 Let me minimize this window.
02:45 I can open DWSIM by double clicking its icon from the Desktop.
02:50 I have already opened DWSIM here.
02:54 You can see a lot of menus and exciting capability.
03:02 DWSIM has a wonderful Help facility.
03:06 You can invoke it by pressing F1.
03:09 Let me press F1.
03:12 I get this Help page.
03:14 It has a lot of information.
03:18 Let me press Simulation Objects.
03:22 Let me press Unit Operations.
03:25 Let me double click on Separator.
03:29 It has given me this page.
03:31 It has a lot of information on separator.
03:36 Let me minimize this window.
03:39 Let me go to the slide.
03:42 Let me point out some advantages of DWSIM.
03:46 It is completely free.
03:48 It has excellent thermodynamics and solvers.
03:52 The entire source code is available to everyone.
03:56 Manuals of DWSIM explain every calculation.
04:00 Commercial simulators keep these confidential.
04:04 The user can introduce models, compounds and thermodynamics.
04:09 One can also use DWSIM’s thermodynamic library with other programs.
04:15 We have excellent spoken tutorials on DWSIM.
04:19 We will begin with the creation of material streams in DWSIM.
04:24 I have already downloaded all the spoken tutorials.
04:29 I will play them one by one.
04:32 Let me play this.Add video audio clip of Creating a material Stream in DWSIM---
04:40 The next tutorial is an introduction to Flowsheeting.
04:45 This constructs a simple flowsheet with a flash and a mixer.
04:50 Let us listen to it.
04:53 Add video audio clip of Introduction to Flowsheeting in DWSIM.
04:59 The next tutorial explains how to simulate a distillation column through shortcut.
05:07 Let us listen to it.
05:10 Add video audio clip of simulating a shortcut distillation column in DWSIM.---
05:17 The next tutorial explains how to carry out rigorous distillation calculations.
05:23 The starting point for this is shortcut distillation.
05:27 Let us listen to it.
05:30 Add video audio clip of simulating a rigorous distillation column in DWSIM.
05:36 The final tutorial I plan to show explains how to do sensitivity analysis.
05:42 Helps do a sensitivity study of some variables on other variables.
05:49 The adjust operation does the same thing automatically.
05:54 Add video audio clip of Sensitivity Analysis, Adjust.
06:04 Here is a summary of the tutorials we just saw.
06:10 Using DWSIM, one can quickly find solutions to flowsheeting problems.
06:15 Carry out "what if" studies.
06:18 Identify bottlenecks and ways to increase the throughput.
06:23 Students will find DWSIM extremely useful.
06:27 It will help them understand the concepts well.
06:29 Their expertise will help improve profits in industry.
06:34 They will get a lot more core engineering jobs.
06:38 It is also useful to those students who want to start a consulting company.
06:43 You may think that because it is an open source software, no help is available.
06:49 Is this true?
06:51 It is not at all true.
06:53 A lot of help is available to the users of DWSIM.
06:57 I will explain them one by one.
07:00 We have spoken tutorial forum.
07:03 Go to this link. I have already opened it.
07:06 Use the horizontal scroll.
07:10 You can also click the button, View all previous questions.
07:14 You may be interested in only one software at a given time.
07:20 Click the lens next to it.
07:22 Let me show the questions on Python, for example.
07:28 Remember, you need NOT log in to see the earlier discussion.
07:34 You may also post a new question by clicking Ask Question
07:38 It is next to "login".
07:40 Let me click it.You have to log in to post a question.
07:45 If you have not registered, you need to do it once.
07:50 I have already registered in this site.
07:53 Let me click this and log in.
07:56 I have to select a category.
07:59 Let me choose DWSIM.
08:02 Suppose that you have a question in the flowsheeting tutorial.
08:06 Choose the tutorial as Introduction to flowsheeting.
08:11 Suppose this question comes at 3 minutes, 35 seconds.
08:16 Choose minute as 3-4.
08:19 Choose second as 30-40.
08:23 Write your question here and submit it, using this green button.
08:29 Let me go to the next slide.
08:31 What if you have a general question,
08:34 not from a spoken tutorial.
08:36 So, it does not have minute and second.
08:39 For example, it may be for a new problem you tried to solve using DWSIM.
08:46 For this, we have another forum, led by the FOSSEE group.
08:52 Let us go there.
08:55 Choose a category from the horizontally scrolling menu.
08:59 You may view previous questions.
09:02 Let me click this.
09:04 Let us, for example, see the discussion on FOSSEE laptop.
09:10 You may see the discussion on printers, for example.
09:14 You may also ask any question on DWSIM.
09:17 Let me click the link Ask Question.
09:21 If you want to do this, you have to log in.
09:24 But you have to register first.
09:27 Let us go to a different type of available help.
09:31 We have a facility called textbook companions.
09:35 It gives DWSIM solution to solved problems from standard textbooks.

10:20 We give honorarium and certificates to those who do this.
10:25 For more details, please go through this link.
10:29 I told you earlier that DWSIM is used worldwide.
10:35 All these users and creators of DWSIM are ready to help you.
10:40 We will see some of the help available from friends across the world.
10:45 An excellent manual on unit operations is available.
10:48 You get a copy of it when you install DWSIM.
10:53 It is available in the docs folder of DWSIM.
10:59 The current version of DWSIM calls this Unit Ops and Utilities Guide
11:05 I have already opened it.
11:07 Let us scroll down.
11:09 Let us click the heat exchanger and see the calculations.
