00:01 Hello Everyone. Welcome to this tutorial on Installation of Audacity in Linux OS.
00:09 In this tutorial, we will learn about installation of

Audacity

00:16 Lame library and FFmpeg library in the Linux Operating System.
00:23 To record this tutorial I am using

Ubuntu LinuxOS version 14.04

00:30 Audacity version 2.1.2

And a working Internet connection

00:38 Audacity is a free and open source software.
00:42 It is used for multi-track audio recording and editing.
00:47 It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux and other operating systems.
00:57 Now let’s learn how to install Audacity in Linux OS.
01:02 Audacity comes pre-installed in Ubuntu Linux OS version 14.04 and above.
01:09 However, if it is not installed on your machine, follow any one of the below methods:
01:16 Go to the terminal and type sudo apt-get install audacity

and press Enter.

01:28 Go to Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic Package Manager, search for Audacity and install it.
01:37 To know how to install software in Linux, refer to the Linux spoken tutorials on this link
01:45 Audacity is already installed in my Linux system.
01:49 To open Audacity in Linux OS, click on Dash Home at the top left corner of the Desktop,

And type Audacity and click on the icon.

02:02 This is how the Audacity interface looks like.
02:06 To cross-verify the installation, we will do a small demo recording.
02:12 Click on the button with the red dot.
02:15 Narrate a sentence - For eg: Welcome to Audacity.
02:21 Now, click on the yellow button to stop the recording
02:25 If you see waveforms below, then your Audacity installation is successful.
02:31 Let’s close this window now, without saving the recording.
02:36 This completes the demo for Linux OS.
02:40 Some important things to know about Audacity.
02:44 By default Audacity, will export the audio files in few formats only. Like dot ogg, dot mp3, etc.
02:57 A plugin called "Lame" is needed in Audacity, to export into mp3 format, in Linux OS.
03:06 It also uses the "FFmpeg" plugin to be able to read/import dot mp4 files in Linux OS.
03:15 Now let us learn about Lame installation in Linux OS.
03:20 Lame allows Audacity to export audio.
03:24 In Linux OS, Audacity has built-in Lame support for .mp3 export.
03:32 Hence a separate installation of Lame is not required.
03:37 So, you should be able to export to mp3 format in Audacity in Linux OS.
03:45 Let’s move on.
03:47 FFmpeg library allow Audacity to import audio from video files.
03:54 In Linux OS, Audacity has built-in FFmpeg Library support.
04:00 Hence a separate installation of the same, is not required.
04:05 This means that you should be able to import audio from video files using Audacity in Linux OS.
04:14 Let me show you a small demo of the same.
04:18 Note: I will import the audio from a video file named as Introduction-to-LibreOffice-Writer.mov in my Desktop.
04:29 Now, click on the Dash Home and type Audacity.

And click on Audacity icon.

04:38 This will open an empty Audacity project on your screen.
04:43 Go to the Main menu, click on the File.
04:47 Now click on Import and then on Audio.
04:53 A dialog box will appear.
04:56 It will ask you to choose the location of the file.
05:00 I will choose Desktop and select my file Introduction-to-LibreOffice-Writer.mov.
05:09 Then click on Open.
05:12 It will import only the audio from this particular video.
05:17 You can see the audio track here.
