Introduction to Lists

MediaWiki is a special software which is used to design Wikis. For any website, formatting is the key to creative and sophisticated designs.

There are two types of lists that can easily be created in the wiki. The first is a bulleted list, and the other is a numbered list. There is no button on the Editor toolbar to create lists so you will need to create them by hand using this simple syntax

Show wiki page There are two types of lists that can easily be created in the wiki. The first is a bulleted list, and the other is a numbered list. There is no button on the Editor toolbar to create lists so you will need to create them by hand using the simple syntax
Scroll to the top of the page and Click on edit.Type *. Creating bulleted lists in MediaWiki is very simple. In order to create a bulleted list, do the following:
  • Type asterisk (*) sign at the beginning of each line for creating a list element. To type start in the computer using keyboard press the shift key and number 8 key.This would create a bulleted list after you save the page.

As a sample type

* my bullet

Scroll to bottom of the page and click on "Save Page" Once you clicked on Save Page, you will be able to see the bulleted list
  • my bullet
Scroll to the top of the page and Click on edit.Type ** and Type ***

Now lets see how to add the levels of the bullets in the list. The number of asterisks you add before the line will indicate the level of list element in the unordered list. For example, type ** which will indicate a second-level list element. Similarly *** will indicate a third-level list element, and so on.
As a sample:

* my bullet
** my second bullet
*** my third bullet
Scroll to bottom of the page and click on "Save Page" Once you clicked on Save Page, you will be able to see the bulleted list as shown below:
  • my bullet
** my second bullet
*** my third bullet
Scroll to the top of the page and Click on edit. *In order to restart a bulleted list, put a wiki line break (an empty line) at the end of the list. Then you can start another list using *. In simple words, for an example after ***, if you want to go to the previous level of the bulleted list type ** that will take you to the previous level and so * to go the main level.

As a sample:

* my bullet
** my second bullet
*** my third bullet
** my second bullet again
* my first bullet
Show wiki page Lets learn how to create the numbered list. There is no button on the Editor toolbar to create lists so you will need to create them by hand using the simple syntax
Scroll to the top of the page and Click on edit.Type #. Creating numbered lists in MediaWiki is very simple. In order to create a numbered list, do the following:

#India
Scroll to bottom of the page and click on "Save Page" Once you clicked on Save Page, you will be able to see the numbered list saying 1. like this as you can see on the screen.
  1. India
Scroll to the top of the page and Click on edit.Type ## and Type ###

Now lets see how to add the levels of the numbers in the list. The number of hash (#) you add before the line will indicate the level of list element in the unordered list. For example, type ## which will indicate a second-level list element. Similarly ### will indicate a third-level list element, and so on.

#India
##Andhra Pradesh
###Hyderabad
Scroll to bottom of the page and click on "Save Page" Once you clicked on Save Page, you will be able to see the numbered list in levels as you can see below:
  1. India
    1. Andhra Pradesh
      1. Hyderabad
Scroll to the top of the page and Click on edit. *In order to restart a bulleted list, put a wiki line break (an empty line) at the end of the list. Then you can start another list using #. In simple words, for an example after ##, if you want to go to the previous level of the numbered list type # that will take you to the previous level.

As a sample:

#India
##Andhra Pradesh
###Hyderabad
##Tamilnadu
#USA

Scroll to bottom of the page and click on "Save Page" Once you clicked on Save Page, you will be able to see the numbered list as shown below:
  1. India
    1. Andhra Pradesh
      1. Hyderabad
    2. Tamilnadu
