To follow this tutorial you should have,
  • Osdag installed on your system
  • Basic knowledge of structural steel design

The prerequisite tutorials are available on this website.

Only narration The user interface of Osdag for Ubuntu Linux, and for Windows is the same.


Annotations are added to the tutorial if there are any differences.

Point to the home page of the Tension Member Design >> Select Bolted to End Gusset module Let us switch to the home page of Tension Member Design.

Select Bolted to End Gusset module.

Point toward the Input Dock fields I have loaded the Logs underscore sample underscore design dot OSI file.
Only narration Please pause the tutorial and load the input file.
Click on the Design button. Click on the Design button below to perform the design.
Only narration Osdag carries out the design.
Point toward the CAD window Note that the CAD window is inactive.
Point toward the Output Dock The Output Dock is not populated with the output values.
Only narration This is because the design is complete but unsafe.
Point to the Output Dock. Let us disable the Output Dock to maximise the log messages window.
Click on the close Output Dock button Click on the close button at the top right corner of the Output Dock.
Point toward the Log messages We see the colour-coded log messages pertaining to the design.
Highlight the timestamp in the log messages The log messages are marked with a timestamp for the reference of the users.
Highlight ERROR message The ERROR message is marked in red and indicates the status of the design.


In this case, the Design is unsafe.

Only narration Let us rectify the design using the log messages and arrive at a safe design solution.

Point to the message in blue colour.

The WARNING messages are marked in Blue colour.
Highlight the WARNING message The WARNING message gives a warning pertaining to a specific design check.
Highlight the WARNING message The WARNING message reads, that the tension force exceeds the tension capacity.
Point to the message. This means that the force exceeds the member capacity in tension.
Point to the message. The INFO messages are marked in Green colour.
Highlight the first INFO message The INFO message gives suggestions to rectify the unsafe design.
Highlight the last INFO message It also suggests where the design check or a trial design has ended.
Highlight the first INFO message The INFO message reads, ‘Define member(s) with a higher cross sectional area.’

Highlight 80 x 80 x 8 in the message.

This means we have to define a section with an area greater than 80 x 80 x 8.
Only narration Let us define a new section.
Click on the Section Size drop-down menu Click on the Section Size drop-down menu and select Customized.
Double-click on 80 x 80 x 8 in the Selected list Double-click on 80 x 80 x 8 in the Selected list to deselect the section.
Scroll down in the Available list and double click on 90 x 90 x 8 Now, scroll down in the Available list.


Find 90 x 90 x 8 and double-click on it to select the section.

Click on the Submit button Click on the Submit button below to confirm and exit.
Click on the Design button Then, click on the Design button below to perform the design.
Point to the messages. We see ERROR and WARNING messages again, as the design is still unsafe.
Highlight the WARNING message The WARNING message reads, that the tension force exceeds the tension capacity.

Point to the messages.

Here, the section area is satisfied but the plate thickness is less.
Only narration Let us define a thicker gusset plate.
Click on the Thickness drop-down menu Click on the Thickness drop-down menu and select Customized.
Double-click on 12 in the Selected list Double-click on 12 in the Selected list to deselect the plate.
From the Available list double-click on 16 Now, from the Available list double-click on 16 to select the plate.
Click on the Submit button Click on the Submit button below to confirm and exit.
Click on the Design button Again, click on Design button below to perform the design.
Only narration Osdag carries out the design.
Highlight the fourth INFO message The INFO message reads, ‘Overall bolted tension member design is safe.’.
Only narration This means that the design is complete and successful.
Highlight the third INFO message If there is scope to optimize the design, Osdag will display additional INFO messages.
Only narration But, this does not mean that the design is unsafe.
Only narration Optimum design can be achieved by defining more inputs for the section, connectors, etc.
Only narration This brings us to the end of this tutorial.
