To record this tutorial, I am using,
  • Ubuntu Linux OS, version 16.04
  • Marble version 1.12.20 and
  • A working Internet connection.

The process demonstrated in this tutorial is identical in,

  • Ubuntu Linux OS, version 18.04
  • Marble version 2.2.20

Pre-requisites

  • To practise this tutorial,learner should be familiar with Marble interface.
  • For the prerequisite Marble tutorials, please visit this site.
Cursor on the interface. I have opened the Marble interface.
Go to Map view >> OpenStreetMap


Point on OpenStreetMap view

We will show the route maps using the OpenStreetMap view.

Go to the Mapview and select OpenStreetMap.

OpenStreetMap opens on the interface.

Cursor on the interface. Let us first learn about OpenStreetMap.

OpenStreetMap

  • OpenStreetMap is an editable navigational map.
  • It gives information about roads, boundaries and transport links.
  • OpenStreetMap shows prominent buildings, airports and train tracks.
Drop-down button >>Flat view. For better visibility, I will select Flat View option from the drop-down.
Zoom in to get India map.

Locate Mumbai on the map.

Double click on Overviewmap.

Context menu opens.

Select Hide option from the menu.

Double click on Compass.

Context menu opens.

Select Hide option from the menu.

Double click on Windrose.

Context menu opens.

Select Hide option from the menu.

Let us go to our home location Mumbai.


I will hide Overviewmap, Compass and Windrose for better view of the map.

Zoom in to show,


Sanjay Gandhi National park

Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport

Western and central railway lines

Godrej Memorial hospital andIIT Bombay.

I will zoom in to show some places in Mumbai on the map.

They are,

  1. Sanjay Gandhi National park
  2. Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport
  3. Western and central railway lines
  4. Godrej Memorial hospital and
  5. IIT Bombay.
Click on Legend panel.

Scroll down to show different symbols on the Legendpanel.

Point to each attribute.

Go to the Legend panel and click on it.

Let us scroll down to show different symbols that represent different attributes.They are,

  1. Transportation
  2. Areas
  3. Places of Interest
  4. Education and others.
Zoom out and go back to the location Mumbai.

Point on the map.

Let us zoom out to go back to the default location.

Now we will learn how to create route maps.

Drag the boundary of panels. I will drag the boundary to see the map clearly.
Click routing panel To find a route map between two places, click on the Routing panel.
Point on two input bars with green buttons A and B icons.

In the Routing panel, we see two input bars with green coloured A and B icons.
Click on the down arrow button next to A. Click on the down arrow button next to A.
Point to the context menu.

Select From Map option.

A drop-down menu opens with different options.

Select From Map option.

Point on the input bars with icons A and B. In the input bars, we will enter the source and destination of the route.
Point on the map. I will demonstrate how to find a route map from Mumbai to Pune.
Type Mumbai in the input bar.

Press the Enter key or click the Search button.

As Mumbai is our starting point, let us type Mumbai in the first input bar.

Click on the Search button or press Enter key on the keyboard.

Point to the buffering. Let us wait till Mumbai is located on the map.
Point on placemarks found: 1. A message, placemarks found: 1 appears next to the Search button.
Point to the A on the map. On the map, location of Mumbai is marked as A.

This A icon is the same as the one shown in the input bar.

Point to second input bar.

Click on the down arrow button next to B.

Go to the second input bar and click on the down arrow button next to B.
Select From Map option from the menu. From the drop-down select From Map option.
Type Pune in the second input bar. I will type Pune in the second input bar.
Click on the Search button or press Enter. Click on the Search button or press Enter key on the keyboard.
Point on the progress bar.

In the map, this position is indicated using the B icon.

Again we will wait till Pune is located on the map.

This location is shown using B icon on the map.

Point on Get Directions button Notice that Search button is now replaced by a Get Directions button.
Click on the Get Directions button Click on the Get Directions button.
Point on the route map.

Point on the message that says routes found: 1appears on the routing panel.

Route map from Mumbai to Pune is shown on the map.

A message, routes found :1 appears in the Routing panel.

Zoom in the route map.


Point to the map

Let us zoom in to get a clear view of the route.
Point at the bottom where the distance shown in km. Distance between these two places is shown at the bottom of the Routing panel.
Cursor on the drop down button. Below the input bars we see a Car (fastest) drop down button.
Click on the drop-down button.

Point to the route profiles.

This drop-down button has four route profiles.

They are,

  1. Car(fastest)
  2. Car (shortest)
  3. Bicycle and
  4. Pedestrian.
Point on Car(fastest) dropdown button. By default, Car(fastest) route profile is selected.

The route profile depends on the type of vehicle we choose.

Point on the route map. On the map we see a route map from Mumbai to Pune with Car(fastest) route profile.
Point on the Bicycle Route profile. Let us find the same route map with Bicycle route profile.
Point on the drop-down button.

Click on Bicycle.

Click on the Car(fastest) drop-down button and select Bicycle.

The Car fastest route profile from Mumbai to Pune is deleted.

Click on the Get directions button.

Point to buffering sign.

Click on the Get directions button.

Please wait if buffering sign is seen.

Point to “No route found” message on the routing panel. A message No route found is seen on the Routing panel.
Go to the Settings icon in the routing panel.

Point on Configure Routing Profile - Marble Virtual Globe dialog box

Click on the Settings icon in the Routing panel.

Configure Routing Profile - Marble Virtual Globe dialog box opens.

Under Active Route Services service settings>> uncheck all other checkboxes. Under the Active Route Services Service Settings, uncheck all the checkboxes.
Click on Yourscheckbox. Then click on Yours checkbox.
Click on the OKbutton. Click on the OK button in the box.
Point on the new route map. Now click on the Get Directions button.

A new route map appears on the map with Bicycle route profile.

Point on the B button on the map.

Right-click on the B button.

Now we will see how to remove this route map.

Right-click on the ending point B.

Point on the context menu. A context menu opens.
From the context menu>> select Remove destination. From the context menu select Remove this destination option.
Point to the route map. Route map between Mumbai and Pune is deleted.
Point to starting point A.

Right-click on the Abutton from the context menu.

Select Remove destination option.

To remove the starting point A, right-click on A.

Select Remove this destination option.

Point on the route map. Now I will show how to find local routes on the map.
Cursor on the map. For demonstration, we will find a route map from Kalyan to Panvel.
Locate Kalyan on the Map.

Point to the crosshair.

Right-click on its label.

Let us locate our starting point Kalyan.

Right-click on its label.

Point on the context menu

Select Directions from here.

A context menu appears.

Select Directions from here option.

Point on the A icon on the starting point Kalyan. A icon appears at the starting point, Kalyan.
Locate Panvelon the map.

Right click on its label.

Let us locate our destination, Panvel. Right-click on its label.
Point on the context menu.


Select Directions from here option.

Context menu appears again.

Select Directions to here option.

Point to the route map. Route map from Kalyan to Panvel appears on the map.
Cursor on the map. Now I will demonstrate how to export this route map.
Right click on the Route map. Right-click on the route map.
Point on Context menu.

From the context menu >> select Export Route option.

Context menu appears again.

From the context menu select Export Route option.

Point on Export Route dailog box.

Double-click on the Desktopicon in the window.

Export Route dailog box opens.

Select a location to save the file.

I will select the Desktop folder.

In the File name field >> type Route Map 1.kml.

Point to Files of type drop-down

Click on Savebutton.

In the File name field type the name as Route-1.gpx.

In the Files of type field, we can select the file format as .gpx or .kml.

Click on the Save button.

Close the Marble application by clicking on X button. I will close the Marble application.

Let us check the exported route map.

Point to the route map, Route-1.gpx file on the Desktop The exported route map Route-1.gpx file is saved on the Desktop.
Double-click to open this file. Select Open with KDE Marble option. Let us double-click to open this file. Select Open with KDE Marble option.
Point on route map from Kalyan to Panvel.


Click on the Close button.
