Opening Slide Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on “Special Effects on Text” using Inkscape.
Learning Objectives (Slide) In this tutorial we will learn to create

System requirement (Slide) To record this tutorial, I am using
  • Ubuntu Linux 12.04 OS
  • Inkscape version 0.48.4
Open Inkscape Let us open Inkscape.


First, we will learn to create a reflected text.

Type “SPOKEN” Type the word “SPOKEN”.


Change the font-size to 40 and make the text bold.

Zoom in to the text for clarity Let me zoom in to the text, so that we can see the demo clearly.
Click on Object menu >> Fill and Stroke Now, go to Object menu and select Fill and Stroke option.
Click on Linear gradient >> Change color to red and black Then, under the Fill tab, click on Linear gradient.


Click on the gradient handles as shown now and change the gradient color to red and black.

Align the gradient in vertical manner Align the gradient vertically.


So now, the gradient should be red at the top and black at the bottom, as shown on the screen.

Click on Selector tool >> Press Ctrl + D Click on the Selector tool and press Ctrl + D to duplicate the text.
Press V Now, press V on the keyboard, to flip the duplicated text.


We can also use the option available on the Tool controls bar to flip.

Move the duplicated text Now, we will move the duplicated text below the original text such that it appears as a mirror image.
Select Gradient tool >> bottom gradient handle Now, select the Gradient tool and click on the bottom gradient handle.
Fill and Stroke >> change Alpha to 0 >> move the bottom handle up a bit Come back to the Fill and Stroke dialog box.

Here, we will change the Alpha value to 0.


We will also move the bottom handle a bit, in the upward direction.

Reduce the opacity to 80 Click on the Selector tool.


Now, reduce the Opacity to 80.

Point to the text Our reflected text is complete now.

Zoom out a little to see it better.

Next, we will learn to create a labeled text.
Create a teal color rectangle First of all, we will create a rectangle in blue color.


In the Fill and Stroke dialog box, make the Alpha value to 255.

Type “SPOKEN TUTORIAL”

Make it Bold

Now, type the text “SPOKEN TUTORIAL” on the rectangle. Change the font size of the text to 40 and make it bold.
Click on Selector tool >>

Press Ctrl + D

Click on Selector tool.


Now, press Ctrl + D to duplicate the text.

The duplicate text is exactly above the original text.

Change text color to white Change the color of the text to white.
Go to Path >> Object to path Then go to Path menu and click on Object to path option.
Go to Object >> Ungroup Now click on Object menu and then on Ungroup option.
Go to Path >> Union Again go to Path menu and click on Union option.
Click on Lower selection one step On the Tool controls bar, click on Lower selection one step icon.
Go to Path >> Linked offset Once again, go to Path menu and this time we will click on Linked offset option.
Click on the white dot and drag Click on the handle that appears on the text and drag it to make the outline bigger.
Click on Selector tool

Click on outline part and move

Click on the Selector tool.


Then click on the outline part and move it down.

Click on Nodes tool Next, click on the Nodes tool.
Click on Selected object to path tool. On the Tool controls bar, click on Convert selected object to path tool.
Delete the unwanted parts Now you can see the nodes on the outline.


Select the unwanted nodes in the middle and delete them, as demonstrated here.


Press the Shift key on the keyboard and drag to select many nodes at a time.

Select the outline part Click on the Selector tool again and move the outline back to its original position.
Select text and change color to Teal Now once again, select the text and change the color to blue.
Press Ctrl + D

Change the color to black

Select the outline part and press Ctrl + D to duplicate it.

Go to Path >> Path Effect Editor Now go to Path menu and click on Path Effect Editor.
Select Envelop Deformation in the Apply new effect drop down.

Click on Add

Now click on the Apply new effect drop down and select the option Envelope Deformation.


Then click on Add button.

Click on Lower selection one step icon three times. Then on the Tool controls bar, click on Lower selection one step icon three times.
Select the black part of outline

Make blur to 4, opacity to 60

Lastly, in the Fill and Stroke dialog box, increase the blur to 4 and decrease the opacity to 60.
After doing this, we will make a hanger for the label.
Click on Ellipse tool >> draw a circle. So, click on the Ellipse tool.


Then press Ctrl key and draw a circle on the top left of the rectangle, so as to make a hole on the label.

Press Ctrl + D

Move the circle to another end

Press Ctrl + D to duplicate the circle.


Then click on the Selector tool and move the circle to the other end of the rectangle.

Create thread using Bezier tool Next, click on the Bezier tool and draw a curvy line, as demonstrated.


The line drawn should look like a hanger.

Point to the text Now our labeled text is ready.

Let us zoom out and have a better look at it.

Next, let us learn how to change the case of the text in Inkscape.
Type spoken on the canvas Click on the Text tool and type alphabets on the canvas.


Notice that the entire text is in lower-case.

Go to Extensions menu >> Text >> Change Case Now, go to the Extensions menu and click on the option named Text and then on Change Case.

You will see some options.


If you are using the older versions of Inkscape, there could be variations in how the options appear in the drop-down menu.

However, it will be easy to locate the options as mentioned in this tutorial.

Click on UPPERCASE Let me click on the option UPPERCASE.


Observe that the case of the text alphabets has changed to upper-case.


Go to Extensions menu >> Text >> Change Case Again click on Extensions menu, then on Text and lastly on Change Case.


Select Random Case This time, select Random Case option. Observe the change in the case of the text.
Point to the other options You can try the other options on your own.
