Opening Slide Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on “Create patterns in Inkscape” using Inkscape.
Learning Objectives (Slide) In this tutorial

We will learn to create patterns using

  • Cloning
  • Pattern along path
  • Spray tool
  • Path effect editor

We will also learn to align nodes.

System requirement (Slide) To record this tutorial, I am using

  • Ubuntu Linux 12.04 OS
  • Inkscape version 0.48.4
Open Inkscape Let us open Inkscape.
Click on Star tool >> Draw a star Click on the Star tool and draw a star in the draw area.

Click on symmetry tab >> drop-down menu >> option simple translation Under Symmetry tab, we can see a drop-down menu with various methods.

For this demo, we will keep the option simple translation.

Change rows and columns to 1 and 40 Change the rows and columns parameters to 1 and 40 respectively.
Shift tab >> Change X parameter to -100 Next go to Shift tab.

Change the percentage of Shift X parameter under Per column to -100, as shown here.

Go to Rotation tab >> Change angle to 10 Next, let us go to Rotation tab.

Change the Angle under Per column to 10.

Click on Create Now click on Create button.

Observe, a circle pattern is formed with the star.

Point to all the stars Any change made on the original star, will be reflected in all the other stars.
Select and scale the original star Let me scale the original star.

Observe all the stars are getting scaled, automatically.

Point to the patterns You can use the other options under Create Tiled clones to make beautiful patterns.

Let us keep this star circle aside.

<<PAUSE>>

Point to the patterns Next, we will learn how to create a pattern along a path.
Draw a rounded rectangle Select Rectangle tool and draw a rounded rectangle.

Color it green.

Then click on the Selector tool.

Change the width to 540 and height 250 On the Tool controls bar change the Width to 540 and Height to 250.
Draw a star >> Width and Height to 100 x 100 Next draw a pattern using the Star tool.

Change the Width and Height to 100 x 100.

Place in on the top left of the rectangle Place it on the top left of the rectangle.
Select both shapes >> Extension menu >> Generate from path >> Pattern along Path Select both the shapes. Go to Extension menu.

Go to Path menu >> Click on Path effects. Go to Path menu. Click on Path Effects Editor.

A dialog box opens up.

Click on Apply new effect Click on Apply new effect drop down menu.

Observe there are various effects available.

Select Spiro spline Let me select Spiro spline. Click on Add.

Observe Spiro effect is added to the shape.

Select Sketch >> Add Next select Sketch and click on Add. Observe the effect.
Point to Tool options Below you can find Tool options to edit.
Select the shape and keep it aside Select both the shape and keep it aside.

Click on the last option Next click on the last option.

This aligns the space vertically. We can use this this option is used for drawing graphs.

Summarize Let us summarize
