Welcome to this Geogebra tutorial on Spreadsheet View Advanced


If this is the first time you are using spreadsheets with Geogebra,

(Learning Objectives)

In this tutorial


we will use the spreadsheet view to


record X and Y Coordinates of a Point traced along a function by using a slider


Use the data to recognise number patterns and make predictions about a function graph

(System Requirements)

To get started with Geogebra,


I am using the GNU/Linux operating system Ubuntu Version 10.04 LTS


and Geogebra Version 3.2.40.0



Switch to Geogebra Window

(Line Through Origin)

Now to the Geogebra Window.


To make the spreadsheet visible,


Go to View Menu option and check the spreadsheet view option .


Create a slider named xValue


we will leave the minimum and maximum default values


and change the increment to 1.


Move the xValue to its minimum value


Plot a point A


Change the Coordinates of Point A


by Right Clicking and selecting Object Properties to xValue for the x coordinate and 3 times Xvalue for the Y coordinate


Here we are setting the slope of the line that this point will traced by this point to 3 .

Hit tab on the key board


Also select the “Trace On” Option and click close


Let us move the spreadsheet view so we can see columns A and B


Select the “Record to Spreadsheet” Option in the first tool , the third option here,


select point A if it is not visible on the drawing pad then select it from the algebra view


Move the slider xValue from the minimum to maximum.


Notice the x coordinate of point A.


This is traced in Column A of the spreadsheet


and the Y coordinate of point A in column B.


Once this lesson is prepared ,


you can ask students to predict the function by seeing the visual trace


or the data in the spreadsheet view.


The predicted function can be an input in the input bar. f(x) = 3 times x.


For times in GeoGebra we can just use space, press enter


If the prediction is correct all the points traced will fall on the line that was input or the function that was input.



Switch to Slide 4 and 5

(Line through Origin)

To Summarise,


we made a slider xValue


Drew a point A with coordinates (xValue, 3 xValue)


Used the Record To Spreadsheet option


to record the x and y coordinates of point A,


for different 'xValue' values


Predicted and input the function by studying the number patterns



Geogebra Window – Linear Equation with Y - Intercept Now to the second part of the lesson

First lets remove Trace on Point A

Lets add the Y Intercept parameter


create a slider named b


with default minimum and maximum values


and increment of 1 and click apply.


Move the value of b to 2


Set xValue to the minimum


Right click on point A select obkect properties and Change the Coordinates of Point A to (xValue, 3 Xvalue + b)


Hit tab on the keyboard


Check the show trace on then move the spreadsheet view so you can see columns C and D.


Place your cursor on cell C1


Select the Record to Spreadsheet Option ,


select point A


Move the slider x Value from the minimum to maximum.


Notice the x coordinate of point A is traced in Column C of the spreadsheet


and the Y coordinate of point A in column D.


From this data you can ask the student to understand the pattern and predict the function.


Repeat this process for different b values


The predicted function can be input in the input bar. g(x) = 3 x + b, the value of b here is 2. Press Enter

Switch to Slide 6 and 7

(Line with Y Intercept)

To summarise again,


We made another slider named b


Altered point A coordinates (xValue, 3 xValue + b)


Used the Record To Spreadsheet option


to record the x and y coordinates of point A,


for different ’xValue’ and ’b’ values


Predicted an input function f(x) =

3x+b . Here we just called the function g(x)

(Assignment)

Now to the assignments –

Trace a Quadratic Function


Make sliders ’xValue’ and 'a' for the quadratic coefficient


Plot a point A with coordinates (xValue, a xValue2)


Use the Record To Spreadsheet option to record the x and y coordinates of point A, for different ’xValue’ and 'a' values

Predict and input the f(x) = a x2

Switch to Slide 9

(Assignment contd)

Make another slider b for the linear coefficient and set the constant term to 3


Plot a point A with coordinates (xValue, a xValue2 + b xValue + 3)

for the Y coordinate


Use the Record To Spreadsheet option to record the x and y coordinates of point A, for different ’a’ and ’b’ value combinations


Predict and input the f(x) = a x2 + b x + 3

Switch to Geogebra File Quadratic.ggb I have already this assignments here. In this case let us select the trace on. We will change the xValue to the minimum. And then use the record to spreadsheet, select point A and move the xValue slider. We can input the predicted function 2 x squared + 2 x + 3. Notice the trace is along the parabola.
