Welcome to this tutorial on Introduction to GeoGebra.

In this tutorial, we will learn,
  • About GeoGebra interface and geometric tools
  • To draw parallel and perpendicular lines
  • To change object properties of a line
  • About properties of Graphics view.

System Requirement

Here I am using,

Ubuntu Linux OS, version 14.04

GeoGebra version 5.0.438.0-d

Pre requisites

To follow this tutorial, learner should be familiar with basic Mathematics.
Click on Dash Home.

In the search bar geogebra.

Point to GeoGebra icon.

Double-click on GeoGebra icon.

To open GeoGebra applicaton in Ubuntu Linux OS, click on Dash Home.

In the search bar type geogebra.

GeoGebra icon appears.

Double-click on the icon to open the GeoGebra application.

In the Search the web and Windows box, type geogebra.

Point to GeoGebra.

Click on it.

Let us open GeoGebra application in Windows 10 OS.

In the Search the web and Windows box, type geogebra.


GeoGebra appears in the list.


Click on it to open the GeoGebra application.

Cursor on the interface. This is the GeoGebra interface.
Click on each menu option and show. It has a standard menu bar with menu items,

File, Edit, View, Options, Tools, Window and Help.

Hover the mouse on the geometric tools.


Point to Undo, Redo, Help and Preferences options.

Below the menu bar, is a tool bar with various geometric tools.

On the right side of the tool bar, we have Undo, Redo, Help and Preferences options.

Point to the views.


Cursor on Graphics view.

Below the tool bar we have Algebra view and Graphics view.


In GeoGebra, geometry and algebra work side by side.

Point to Graphics view.

Point to Algebra view.


Graphics view is used to create geometric figures using tools on the toolbar.


Algebra view displays the corresponding algebraic expressions of the drawn figures.

Click on View menu to show various views. Using View menu, we can open or close any view based on our requirement.
Point to the input bar. At the bottom of the window, we have an input bar.
Click in input bar to show alpha.

Click on alpha symbol.

Click on ? mark to show the command inputs.

We can directly enter algebraic commands and functions using the input bar.
Point to Grid and Axes. By default grid and axes options are enabled on the Graphics view.

You can disable the axes or grid using the context menu.

Right click on Graphics view.


Point to Graphics menu.

Right click on Graphics view.

The Graphics menu opens.

Point to Grid and Axes check boxes. In this menu, we have options to check and uncheck Axes and Grid.
Cursor on Graphics view. Let me show you another method to enable or disable the axes and grid.
Point to small arrow triangle next to Graphics view. Notice a small arrow triangle next to Graphics, named as Toggle Style Bar.
Click on the arrow triangle >> drop down menu opens.

Point to first two options.

Click on the arrow triangle to open the drop-down menu.

Here you will see options to check and uncheck the axes and grid.

Point to tool bar. Next we will learn about the tool bar in detail.
Click on Move Graphics View tool. Let us click on Move Graphics View tool at the right end of the toolbar.
Point to dark blue border. Notice that, a dark blue border appears around the tool.

This indicates that the tool is selected.

Point to the name and function. Hover the cursor on the tool.

Its name and function appears in the tool tip box.

Point to the selected tool

Click and drag the Graphics view.

Using this selected tool, we can move the Graphics view.

Click and drag the Graphics view as required.

Point to the arrow triangle.

Place the cursor on the triangle at the corner of any tool.

Each tool has a small black triangle at its corner.

When the cursor is placed on the triangle, it turns red.

Click on Move tool.

Move the mouse over the related tools.

Let us click on Move tool on tool bar.

A drop-down list of related tools appear.

Click on Point tool >> click anywhere on the Graphics view.

Point to A

Click again.

Point to the coordinates in the Algebra view.

Let us draw points in the Graphics view.

Click on Point tool and then click on the Graphics view

Point A is drawn.

Click again to draw another point B.

Note that the corresponding coordinates of the points appear in the Algebra view.

Click on Line tool.

Point to the line tools.

Let us learn to draw a line.

Click on the triangle at the corner of Line tool.

Here you can see a list of Line tools to draw various types of lines.

Click on Line tool and click on points A and B Using Line tool, we will draw a line through points A and B.


Click on Line tool and click on points A and B.


Line f passes through A and B.

Point to all the objects. Let us delete all the objects on the Graphics view.
Press Ctrl+A

Press Delete key on the keyboard.

Press Ctrl+A to select all the objects.

Press Delete key on the keyboard.

Click on Line tool >> Click on Graphics view line AB. Let us redraw the line AB.

Click on Line tool and click on the Graphics view.

Click again at a different place to draw the line AB.

Point to line AB. Next I will draw a line perpendicular to line AB.
Click on Perpendicular Line tool.

Click above line AB to draw point C >> click on line AB.

Point to line g

To do that, click on the Perpendicular Line tool.


Click above line AB to draw point C and then click on line AB.

Line g passing through C is perpendicular to line AB (f).

Point to line AB. Next let us draw a line parallel to line AB.
Click on Parallel Line tool.


Click below AB to draw point D >> click on line AB.


Point to line h parallel to AB.

Click on Parallel Line tool.

Click below AB to draw point D, then click on line AB.

A line h, parallel to AB and passing through point D, is drawn.

Point to the lines. Now we will mark intersection points for the two lines.
Click on Intersect tool, in the Point tool drop down. In the Point tool drop-down, select Intersect tool.
Click on the intersection of lines f and g.


Click on the intersection of lines g and f.

Click on the intersection point of the lines f and g.

Then click on the intersection point of the lines g and h.

Now we will make our drawing a bit interactive.
Click on Move tool. Click on Move tool.
Click on and drag point A. Click on point A and drag.
Cursor on on various points. Notice that points E and F and all lines move along with point A.
Cursor on B and D. Similarly we will move points B and D.
Drag point B >> Drag point D. Points E , F and the lines move along with point B.


Only point F and line h move along with point D.

Cursor on points A, B and D Points A, B and D are independent objects.
Point to the points E and F. Now I will try to move points E or F.


We do not see any movement.

This indicates that, points E or F are dependent objects.

Cursor on the interface. Now let us change the properties of the lines.
Right click on line AB.


Point to menu with all the properties of line.

Right click on line AB.


A context menu opens, with all the properties of the line.

Click on Object Properties.

Point to the Preferences window.

Select Object Properties.

Preferences window opens.

Resize the Preferences window. Resize the Preferences window to see the changes on the Graphics view.
Point to the properties in the window. I will explain some basic properties in the Preferences window.
Type name as Line AB. In Name box, you can change the name to Line AB.
Type caption as Original Line. And the Caption as Original Line.
Click the Show Object check box to show or unshow the line. Click the Show Object check box, to show or unshow the line.
Point to Show Label drop down. The Show Label check box has a drop down to choose.
Point to Name & value.

Point to the name and value below the line.

I will choose Name & Value.


Notice that name and value appears below the line.

Click on Color tab.

Point to the color box.

Next click on the Color tab.


Here we have a color box to colour the line.

Point to the Preview box. Below the colour box there is Preview box to view the changed colour.
Click on green box. I will click on the green box.

The colour of Line AB has changed to green.

Click on Style tab. Next click on Style tab.
Point to Line Thickness, Line Opacity, Line Style. Here you can change, Line Thickness

Line Opacity and Line Style.

Close Preferences window. Close the Preferences window.
Point to line AB. Observe the Line AB with changed object properties.
Point to Line h I will change the object properties of line h.
Point to the Preferences window. Right-click on line h, to select Object Properties.

Preferences window opens.

Point to colour, style of line h.


Click on Color tab >> Click on Pink.

Click on Style tab >> click on Dashed line.

Here I will change the colour to pink and style to dashed line.
Close Preferences window. Close the Preferences window.
Click File menu and select Save.


Point to Save dialog box.

Now let us save the file.

Click File menu and select Save.

Save dialog box opens.

Select Documents folder. I will select Documents folder on my machine.

You can select any folder of your choice on your machine.

Type the File name as Lines >> click on Save. Type the File name as Lines.


Then click on Save button at the bottom.

Point to the file extension. Our file is saved with .ggb extension.

Assignment

Pause the tutorial and do this assignment.


1. Open a new GeoGebra window.

2. Draw a line segment AB using Segment tool

3. Draw a perpendicular bisector to segment AB.

4. Rename the lines and change the object properties.

Show the completed assignment Your completed assignment should look like this.
Click on File and select New Window. Let's now open a new window.


Click on File menu and select New Window.

Cursor on Graphics view.

Click on top right x to close Algebra view.

I will now explain about Graphics window properties.


Here I will close the Algebra view.

Right click on Graphics window. Right click on the Graphics window.
Point to the options in the Context menu. The context menu opens with various options.
Choose Graphics option. Choose Graphics option.
Point to Preferences window. The Preferences window opens.
Point to Preferences window.


Resize Preferences window >> Graphics view.

In the Preferences window, we will see Basic, xAxis, yAxis and Grid tabs.


Resize Preferences window and Graphics view and place them side by side.

Cursor on Axes. We will change the properties of the Axes in the Basic tab.
Click on Bold check-box.

Point to the Axes.

Click on Bold check-box.

This makes the Axes bold.

Click on Color button.


Point to Color box.

Click on Color button.


Choose a color box appears.

Point to dark colour >> click OK button.


Point to the colour.

You can choose any dark colour and click OK button.


The colour of the axes changes accordingly.

Select Line style drop down.

Point to two-sided arrow option.

Next, select Line style drop down.

I will select two-sided arrow option.

Point to Miscellaneous. Now we will move on to Miscellaneous properties.
Click on Background Color button.


Choose a color box appears.

Let us change the background colour of the Graphics view.


Click on Background Color button.


Choose a color box appears.

Select light green >> click OK button.


Point to the background colour.

I will select light green and click OK button.


Observe that the background colour changes to light green.

Click on Grid tab.

Point to Show Grid check-box.

Now click on Grid tab.


By default, Show Grid check-box is checked.

Click on Color button.

Choose a color box appears.

Let us change the colour of the Grid.


Click on Color button.

Choose a color box appears.

Select Dark Green

Click OK button.


Point to the grid's colour.

I will select Dark Green and click OK button.


Observe that the colour of the grid changes to dark green.

Close the Preferences window.

Close the Preferences window.


Observe the GeoGebra interface with changed properties.
