Title Slide

Hello everyone.

Welcome to this tutorial on Overview of GChemPaint.

Slide Number 2+3

Learning Objectives

In this tutorial, we will learn to,
  • Install GChemPaint along with all its utility files
  • View menubar of GChemPaint and its utility softwares
  • Use GChemPaint User Manual
  • Use different GChemPaint utility softwares

We will also

  • See the relation between GChemPaint and Jmol Application
  • Take a quick look at various structures that can be drawn using GChemPaint
Slide Number 4

System Requirement

For this tutorial I am using
  • Ubuntu Linux OS version 12.04.
  • GChemPaint version 0.12.10.
  • GChemCalc version 0.12.10.
  • GChem3D version 0.12.10.
  • GChemTable version 0.12.10.
  • Jmol Application version 12.2.2

Pre-requisites

To practise this tutorial, you will require
  • Knowledge of high school Chemistry and
  • Internet connectivity

About GChemPaint

Let's see what is GChemPaint.
  • GChemPaint is a 2D chemical structure editor for Gnome-2 desktop.
  • It has GChemCalc, GChem3D and GChemTable as its utility features.
  • GChemPaint is available only on Linux OS.
  • GChemPaint is included in the Gnome Chemistry Utils
Slide Number 7

Installation on Ubuntu Linux

GChemPaint and all its utility files can be installed on Ubuntu Linux OS using Synaptic Package Manager.

For more information on Synaptic Package Manager please refer to the Linux series on our website.

Slide Number 8

Installation on Ubuntu Linux

Please check the following utilities in the Synaptic Package Manager window.
  • gchempaint,
  • libgcu0,
  • gcu-plugin,
  • libgcu-dbg
  • gcu-bin
Now we will move on to the User Manual.
Slide Number 9

User Manual

Point to the link.

User Manual briefly explains how to use GChemPaint and its utilities.

GChemPaint provides User Manual at this link.

http://gchemutils.nongnu.org/paint/manual/index.html

Point to Ubuntu Desktop menubar. The menubars of GChemPaint and all its utilities will appear on the Ubuntu Desktop menubar.
Point to the tool box. This is the tool box of GChemPaint.
Point to the tools of the tool box. We will use various tools to draw different structures.
Point to Current element drop down arrow button. Tool box has an inbuilt Periodic Table to replace the Current element.
Point to various structures. Here are different structures drawn using the various tools in the tool box.
Point to the tools. During the course of the series, I will explain how to draw various structures using these tools.
Now I will discuss about the utility software of GChemPaint.
Point to Chemical Calculator window. This is Chemical Calculator window.
Type “C3H8” in the search bar >>press enter. I will type “C3H8” in the search bar and press Enter.
Move the cursor on the window. This window shows details and Isotropic pattern of Propane.
Move the cursor on the window. This is GChem3D window.

It shows 3D models of 2D structures drawn in GChemPaint.

Move the cursor on the window. The new version of GChemPaint has improved 3D rendering of the molecules.
Move the cursor on the window. This is GChemTable window.

It has Periodic Table of elements and their trends.

There is one more unique feature in GChemPaint.

2D structures drawn in GChemPaint can be viewed in Jmol Application as 3D structures.

Point to .mol format. To view structures in 3D, GChemPaint files have to be saved in .mol format.

About Jmol Application

A brief introduction to Jmol Application.

It is,

  • Free and open source Molecular Viewer.
  • Used to create and view 3 dimensional models of chemical structures.
  • Used to view secondary structures of proteins and macromolecules.

For more details, please refer to the Jmol Application series on our website.

Slide Number 11 In the GChemPaint series, we will learn exciting features like -
  • Use Templates and Residues
  • Form molecules and bonds
  • Aromatic Molecular structures
  • Orbital overlap
  • Resonance Structures
  • View 3D structures
  • View Periodic Table trends
Let's summarize.
Slide Number 12

Summary

In this tutorial we have learnt to,
  • Install GChemPaint along with all its utility files.
  • View menubar of GChemPaint and its utility softwares
  • Use GChemPaint User Manual
  • Use GChemPaint utility softwares
  • And about the relation between GChemPaint and Jmol Application.

We also had a quick look at different structures that can be drawn in GChemPaint.
