Welcome to the tutorial on

Slide Presentation using Freeplane.

Learning Objectives

In this tutorial, we will learn to,
  • Create spotlight setting
  • Create slides
  • Add a title and contents to slide
  • Rearrange slide position and
  • Export the slides to png image files.

System Requirement

To record this tutorial, I am using
  • Ubuntu Linux version 16.04 OS
  • Freeplane v1.7.10 and
  • Firefox web browser v77

To practise this tutorial,
  • Learner must be familiar with the Freeplane interface.
  • For prerequisite tutorials, please visit this site.

Code Files

* The files used in this tutorial are provided in the Code Files link.
  • Please download and extract them.
  • Make a copy and then use them while practising.
Go to Desktop. I have saved the input file on the Desktop.
Open astronomy.mm. Open the astronomy dot mm file in Freeplane.
Select the parent node. Select the parent node.
Check box for View, View Settings, Spotlight. Click on, View, and View Settings.

Click the check box for Spotlight in the sub-menu.

Observe that the background changes to grey color.

Hover mouse on root node, then, Earth's axis of rotation, solstice and Equinox. The selected node is highlighted in a rectangular spotlight.
Show the spotlight on the map. Spotlight helps to draw the attention of the audience to the selected node.
Cursor on the map. However, other parts of the map are also visible, with less bright surroundings.
Click on Tools, Preferences. Let’s adjust the Presentation properties.

Click on Tools and select Preferences.

Point to the dialog box.

Click on the Presentation tab.

The Preferences dialog box opens.

Click on the Presentation tab.

Click on the grey rectangle next to Spotlight background color. Click on the grey rectangle next to Spotlight background color.
Show the dialog box.

Pick a sky blue shade in the Swatches tab.

In the Swatches tab, I will pick a sky blue shade for the slide background.
Click on the RGB tab. Click on the RGB tab.
Point to the Alpha option. Notice the alpha value is at 255.

Alpha option changes the transparency level of the background.

Click on the OK button. Click on the OK button in the box.
Click on Ok in the Preferences dialog box. Then, click on the OK button again in the Preferences dialog box.
Show warning pop-up message. A warning pop-up message appears, prompting to restart Freeplane.
Cursor on the screen. You may or may not get this message depending on your system.
Click on Ok to in the pop-up window. Click on Ok to close the pop-up window.

The changed color setting, takes effect for me, without restarting Freeplane.

Cursor on the canvas. Notice that only the highlighted node is visible.

Rest of the canvas is covered in blue.

Click on Tools, Preferences. Again, open the Preferences dialog box.
Click on the grey rectangle next to Spotlight background color. Open the Spotlight background color dialog box again.
Click on the RGB tab. Go to the RGB tab.

Let's reduce the Alpha value and see the result.

Drag the Alpha slider to 111. Drag the slider for Alpha to about 111.

You may also use the triangle button on the right side.

Click on OK button in the box. Click on the OK button in the box.
Click on Ok in the Preferences dialog box. Click on the OK button again in the Preferences dialog box.
Click on Ok on the prompt. Click on Ok to close the pop-up window.

When value of Alpha is lowered, other nodes are also visible with less bright surroundings.

Cursor on the map. Let us set up slides and choose visible nodes for each slide.
Click on the Tool panel. Click on the Tool panel.
Hover mouse next to Tool Panel, Presentations, Presentations -/ - . In the Tool Panel, select the Presentations tab.

In Presentations section notice this sign (-/-) as seen here.

Cursor next to -/- sign. This means, I have no presentations set up now.
Hover over the icons to show tooltips on icon function. Hover over the icons to show tooltips on icon function.

Icons and Tooltips

  • The function of each icon can be viewed as a tooltip.
  • There is no visible name written on the icons.
  • Learner must practise and familiarise with icon functions.
Click on New presentation icon. Click on the New presentation icon to add a new presentation.
Type name as weather, press Enter. I will name it Weather and press Enter.
Hover mouse next to 1/1. The sign changes to 1/1.
In the Slides section, hover mouse next to -/-. Currently, this presentation has no slides.
Click on the first icon to add a New slide. In the Slides section, click on the first icon to add a New slide.
For name, type Title. Type Title for name of the slide as seen here.


Select root node. I will select the root node.
Under Slide content click on the second icon from left to add slide content. Under Slide content, click on the second icon from left to add slide content.
Point to the tooltip for a second icon, top show, Add currently selected nodes to the slide. The tooltip for the icon is Add currently selected nodes to the slide.
Hover mouse over the root node. Notice that I have selected the root node in the canvas.
Show the added content on the screen. Now, contents of the selected nodes get added as the slide contents.
Point mouse around green box on the root node. A green box appears around the nodes added as contents in the slide.
Hover mouse next to Set zoom icon. We can also set the zoom level using the zoom button.

I will not change it now.


Click on the first icon to add New Slide. Now, let's add the second (2nd) slide as before.
Name this slide Topics. I will name this slide as Topics.
Select all child nodes of the root node.

Press and hold the Ctrl and click all the child nodes.

Select all child nodes of the root node for slide content in the canvas.
Click on the icon for Add currently selected nodes to the slides.

Point to the green coloured border around the child nodes.

Click on the second icon in the Slide section to add content as we did earlier.

The selected nodes get added as contents of the slide.

Add a slide, and name it Axis of rotation. In the Slides section add a third slide and name it Axis of rotation.
Check the box for show only selected nodes. Check the box for show only selected nodes to highlight more options.
Check the box for show ancestors. Here, check one more box to Show ancestors as seen here.

Then the parent node also in the presentation.

Select child nodes of Earth's axis of rotation and add to contents. Select the child nodes of Earth's axis of rotation.

Add them as contents of the slide.

Add one more slide and name it Eclipse. I will make 4 slides in this presentation.

Add one more slide and name it Eclipse.

Select the Child node of Eclipse node for content. For contents, add the child node of Eclipse node.
Pause the video as needed and create more slides as desired to practice.
Hover mouse next to Add slide and Add contents icons. Give a title name for each slide, so that topic is clear from the slide name.

I want the Eclipse slide to be the third slide among the four.

Hover mouse next to slide up and slide down icon.

From the Slides pulldown, select the Eclipse slide.

From the Slides pulldown, select the Eclipse slide.

Tooltip on the third icon in the Slides section moves the slide up.

Click on the third icon, which is the up arrow and set position till it shows 3/4. Choose the slide, and click once on this up arrow.

Now the position shows as 3/4.

This means it is at the 3rd slide among the four.

Cursor on the down arrow. Notice that, Slide down function is also available.

Now, let's play the presentation and test it.

Hide the Tool panel.

Let’s use the menu options for this instead of the options in the Tool panel.

Hide the Tool panel.

Click on Navigate, Presentation. Click on Navigate, Presentation.

Notice the many options in the submenu along with the shortcut keys.

Click on presentation mode is seen. Click on Run presentation from the beginning.

Display goes to slide presentation mode.

Press F5 and Control+F5 and show browsing through slides. To browse forward through the slide, use the F5 key.

To browse backward, press Control and F5 together.

Browse through the presentation. Browse through the presentation and go to the Eclipse slide.
Move node in canvas, using up and down arrow key. Up and down arrow keys move the nodes in the canvas.
Use the arrow keys, to browse through the node. Use left and right arrow keys to browse through the node in the slide.
Click on the video link. Let's play the video link in the Eclipse slide by clicking on the link.
Show the web browser opening. Web browser opens and plays the video as it is a link to an Internet site.
Play the video for a few seconds. The video can be played, if you have a working internet connection.
Close the web browser. Close the web browser after a few seconds.
Press the ESC key. We are back on the Freeplane slide show.

Press the ESC key to exit the slide presentation mode.

Open the Tool panel and go to the Presentations tab. Open the Tool panel, go to the Presentations tab and scroll down.
click on Preferences. Click on Preferences to open the dialog box.
Choose the Presentation tab. In the Presentation tab, Notice a directory named, 'exportedPresentation'.

Freeplane will create this directory, to store the exported images.

Cursor on the map. You may change this default setting if desired.
Click on Cancel. I will not make any changes here and click on Cancel.
Point mouse to Export current presentation to PNG images. Notice Export current presentation to PNG images option.
Click on Export current presentation to PNG images. Click on it to create the images for the slides.

Allow the process to complete.

Cursor on the map. A file manager folder may open to view the exported files.
Press Ctrl+S.

Click on File, Quit Freeplane.

Press control S to save the map.

Choose File, Quit Freeplane, to quit Freeplane.

Go to Desktop.

Select exportedPresentation and press Enter.

Go to Desktop and notice the newly created folder.

Select it and Press Enter to view the contents.

Notice a directory with the map name.

Press Enter. Press Enter and go to the directory.

Let’s browse through the exported image files.

Close the images. I will close the exported images.
