Type freeplane in the search form. In the search form, type Freeplane.
Open Freeplane. Double click on the Freeplane icon to open the program.
Cursor on the map. The program may open with a previously loaded map.
Click on File, Newmap. Press Ctrl and N keys together or click on File, Newmap.

A select template dialog box opens.

Hover mouse next to remember my decision. I will leave the Remember my decision check-box, un-checked for now.
Click on the pulldown, select standard-1.6.mm and click on OK button button. Click on the dropdown.

Hover mouse next to the New Mindmap node. A new map opens with the root node.

The node has New Mindmap written in it for node text.

Hover mouse over the node. It is the only node present in the map and is automatically selected.
Double click on the “New Mindmapnode. Double click on the root node to edit it.
Type Natural Resources and press enter. Type Natural Resources in it and press Enter.

This is called in-line editing.

Right click to open the context menu. For rich text formatting, right click on the node to open the context menu.
Choose, Edit Node core in dialog. Choose, Edit Node core in dialog from the menu.

Hover mouse over font, size, color formatting options. Notice the font, size, Text color and alignment formatting options.

Click mouse on font style, show style can also be changed. You may choose to change the font style if desired.

In the child node, type Water and press enter. Type Water as the node text and press Enter.

Alternately, press the insert key on the keyboard to insert the child node.

Select root node, Click on Edit, New Node, New Sibling Node Click on Edit, New Node , New Sibling Node to add a sibling node.

Now we have a sibling node to Water.

Type Air in new node. Type Air for the node text.

Keyboard shortcut to add sibling nodes is to press Enter.

Press enter thrice, and type soil, energy, wind in the three nodes. Now, add 3 more sibling nodes to Air node.

I will assign them to Soil, Energy, and Wind which are Natural resources.

I will use the keyboard shortcut to add the siblings.

Cursor on the canvas. Let's format the map using the tool panel.
Select root node. I will select the root node.
Open Tool panel. To open the Tool panel, click on the arrow seen on the right middle side of the window.
Click on the Format tab. In the tool panel, click on the Format tab.
Adjust zoom level as desired. (zoom in or zoom out using Ctrl+mouse scroll wheel). Zoom and reposition the map to suit your convenience.
Click on the colored rectangle next to text. In Color of whole core section, click on the rectangle next to Background.
Cursor on the dialog box. Background dialog box appears with many tab choices.
Show Swatches tab and RGB panel. In the swatches tab, notice the color choices available in the RGB panel.
Position wheel to yellow and click on OK button. I will select the yellow color and click on the OK button in the box.

It is seen in the lower end of the screen for me.

Move cursor from root to water and back to highlight yellow color. The color change is visible, only when another node gets selected.
Scroll down the tool panel. Scroll down the tool panel.
Hover mouse next to Font for whole core section. Font for whole core section can also be used to format fonts.
Hover mouse over Line color, style and width in Edges section. Scroll down the Tool panel.

Node shape, node border, edges and edge color can also be formatted here.

Click on Format, Automatic layout. Click on Format on the top menu and select Automatic layout.
Hover mouse next to the disabled tick mark. The Automatic layout is disabled for me.
Click on for all nodes option. I will change the layout to For all nodes option.
Cursor on the map. Now, color, font and node styles change across the map.
Click on Format, Apply style to view the options. You can also set styles using the Apply style option in the Format menu.
Cursor on Apply style levels. Depending on the operating system, the option may be called Apply style levels.
Cursor on Apply style levels. To choose an option in the menu, click and select the check box on it.
Hover mouse over topic, subtopic, subsubtopic option. One can choose from Topic, Subtopic or Subsubtopic option.
Hover mouse over the Levels. The different Levels arrange hierarchy of nodes into preset styles.
Hover mouse over Level 1 and Level 2. Level 1 may be chosen for all child nodes from the Root node.

Level 2 may be chosen for grandchildren and so on.

Cursor on the canvas. You may pause the video, and familiarize with the options under Apply style.
Hide the Tool panel. Click on the right arrow in the Tool panel, to hide it.
Cursor on the canvas. Now let's add concepts to the Water node.
Click on Water node. Click and select the Water node
Type Rain & Snow, Harvesting methods, Sustenance, Acid rain and Water Pollution. Add 5 water related concepts as child nodes of Water as seen on the screen.

They are, Rain and Snow, Harvesting, Sustenance, Acid rain & Water Pollution.

Video will show the automatic repositioning of the nodes on the canvas. Notice the dynamic positioning of nodes in the canvas when children are added.

This prevents the node texts from overlapping with each other.

Add 3 child nodes to Air pollution. Next, add 3 child nodes for the Air concept.
Type Particulate matter, Ozone layer depletion & greenhouse gases in them. Enter the three child concepts of air as seen on the screen.
Cursor on Water node. You may want to move the positions of the nodes at this point.
Select Water. To shift the Water node upwards, first select it.
Move cursor slightly to the right, till an ellipse is seen. Move the cursor slightly towards the connecting line, till an ellipse is seen.
Highlight the hand sign. The cursor also shows a hand sign.

In some operating systems, the cursor may change to a four direction arrow.

Click and drag the node upwards. Click and drag the node upwards, where you want it to be.
Cursor on the node. I will place it a bit upward for clarity.
Select Energy node and press insert twice. Next, add Coal and Petroleum products as two concepts in energy.
Type Coal and Petroleum products in them. Type Coal and Petroleum products in the child nodes.

Both of these contribute to air pollution.

Add a summary node, for children of Energy. Add a summary node, for this concept.
Hold down shift key and click on both child nodes under Energy to select them. Hold down the shift key.

Click on both child nodes under Energy to select them.

Click on Edit, New Node, New Summary Node Go to Edit menu, New Node, New Summary Node and click on it.
Type Burning fossil fuels and press Enter. Type Burning fossil fuels for node text.
Cursor on child nodes of Air. Similarly, child nodes of Air represent 3 facets of air pollution.
Select the 3 child nodes. Click on Edit, New Node, New Summary Node Add a Summary Node for these three child node concepts.
Type Air pollution. Label it Air pollution.
Add a sibling node to Wind and label it Clean Energy. Next, add a child node to Wind and label it Clean Energy.
Select Clean energy node. Let’s select it.

Clean energy is different from fossil fuel energy.

Press the Insert key.

Type Windmills for node text.

Let’s Type Windmills as a child node to the Clean Energy node.
Click on File, Save map. Click on File, Save map to save the map.
Choose Desktop folder. I will save the file in the Desktop directory.
Type filename as Natural-resources and click Save. For file name type Natural-resources dot mm and click on Save.
Cursor on the map. You may pause the video and explore more formatting options.
Click on File, Quit Freeplane. Click on File, Quit Freeplane to quit Freeplane.
