To follow this tutorial,
  • Learners must be familiar with the FreeCAD interface.
  • For pre-requisite tutorials, please visit this site.

Open FreeCAD and go to Draft workbench. Open FreeCAD and start a new file.

Select Draft workbench.

Make sure that Orthographic and top view are selected.

Cursor on the polygon tool. Let’s add a pentagon to this drawing.

FreeCAD inscribes a polygon inside of a circle.

Slide Number 6

Inscribing pentagon inside a circle

For inscribing pentagon of a circle

R=0.85 A

A is length of the side of the pentagon

R is the radius of the circle

Equation for inscribing a pentagon of a circle is R is equal to 0.85 times A.

Where A is the length of the side of the pentagon.

And R is the radius of the circle.

Click on the polygon tool in the Draft creation tools menu. Click on the polygon tool as seen.
Cursor on Sides option in Combo view, Model tab.

Change the number of Sides to 5.

Notice the Sides option in Combo view, Model tab.

Change it to 5, since a pentagon has 5 sides.

Move the cursor to the drawing canvas. Move the cursor to the drawing canvas and notice the + crosshair.
Left click hold and drag. Left click hold and drag to form the desired polygon.

First only the circle on which the polygon is inscribed is seen.

Annotation on the Radius panel.

Highlight the radius change in the comboview panel.

Notice the Radius form on the left combo View panel.

As you drag to form a larger circle, the radius in the form also changes.

At ~ r=20, left click on the canvas. I will keep the radius around 20mm and click on the canvas.

This fixes the radius of the circle and the polygon can be seen.

Cursor on the polygon.

Highlight the green outline on the selected object at editing.

To select an object click on it and notice the green outline.

Highlight polygon while editing. The new object is also added in the combo view as polygon.
Click on polygon to select it.

Make sure the polygon is selected in the combo view.

Highlight in video editing.

Cursor on Property in Model tab.

Place the cursor on the edge of the panel.

A two sided arrow appears on the edge.

Click and drag to resize the panel.

Highlight in video editing.

Place the cursor on the edge of the panel as seen.

Click and drag to resize the panel.

Properties of the object can be changed using the Model tab.

For Bounding box, choose true.

Show the green bounding box.

For the first option of the bounding box, choose true.

Notice that a bounding box for the object is displayed.

Cursor near the bounding box. This allows us to encompass the area of selected objects in the canvas.
Toggle the bounding box off from the view menu. We can also toggle this on or off from the view toolbar on the top menu.
Scroll down to object style.

Open the pull down menu for Display mode.(Draw style)

Select Wireframe for Display mode.

Scroll down to object style.

Click on the form for line color. Scroll down and click on the form for line color.

A Select color dialog box appears.

Some of you will have to click again for the dialog box to open.

Scroll down.

Click on the form for Shape color.

Scroll down to the Shape color.

Click on the form and open the select color option.

Choose orange color and click on Ok.

If the object has multiple faces, we can color the various faces differently.

I will choose an orange color and click on OK.

Cursor on transparency. Notice that we can also change the transparency of the object here.
Cursor on circle tool in Draft tools. Now, pause the video, and draw a circle partially overlapping the pentagon.
Cursor on flat lines and show filled pentagon. Use flat lines for display mode and fill it with a color of your choice.
Cursor on transparency. Then change the transparency level and notice the changes.
Left click on the canvas and notice the changes. The color changes will be visible only when the object is not highlighted.
Click on one of the edges of the pentagon. Next, let’s measure the distance of the side of the pentagon.

First click to select the edge of your choice.

Click on the Dimension tool on the Draft Annotation tools. Next, click on the Dimension tool in the Draft Annotation tools.
Move the line a bit away from the selected line. A line parallel to the selected line appears on the canvas.

Place it a bit away where you want the annotation to be placed.

Left click and notice the measured distance. Left click to notice the measured line and annotation.

For some of you the font size may be very small and not visible.

We can format the annotation globally or individually.
Select the Dimension label in the comboview, model tab. In the combo View, model tab, Select the dimension label.
Open the line color selection dialog box in the graphics section. Scroll down to the graphics section and line color.

Click once or twice depending on your system to open the select color dialog.

The changes will apply only to the annotations that you will add later on.

Click on Cancel. For now I will click on Cancel as I do not want to change them.
click on the measure distance tool on the View toolbar. Let us measure the distance between two user chosen points.

First click on the measure distance tool on the View toolbar.

Cursor on the report view window. The report view window prompts the user to pick the first point.
Click on a point on the canvas. Click on your desired first point.

I will choose one of the vertex of the pentagon.

Click on another vertex. Then I will click on another vertex.

Notice the distance between them is now shown on the canvas.

Cursor on combo view, model tab and show the added measurement. Delete the measurements using the combo view, model tab.

Select the object and delete it.

Cursor on View toolbar fit all and fit selection tooltip. You may want to readjust the zoom level at any point.

Use the View toolbar options as seen to fit all objects or the selection.

Select an object and right click to open the context menu. Many of these are also available as context menus.

Right click on the canvas with the selected object to access them.

Users must practice to get familiarity with the various tools.
Click on File, hover on save. Save your work if desired.
