In this tutorial we will learn about
  • the formalities to open a Savings Bank account in a bank.

Any person above the age of 18 years is entitled to open a Savings Bank account.

We can open a Savings Bank account in any bank that offers banking and financial services.

To open an account, we will need to visit the nearest branch of the bank…..


….and get Form 60.

Form 60 looks like this.


For demonstration purpose, I will be using SBI bank’s Form 60.


The same form will be available in other banks also with minor variations.

The form is a set of 4-8 pages, in a form of a booklet.

This is the account opening form that we have to fill, if we do not have a PAN card.

First of all, we have to write our full name and address.


So, I will write my name and house address.

Next, we have to specify which type of account we want to open.


For eg:

  1. Savings Bank account
  2. Current account

Instead of Deposit, text will be Savings Bank account


Replace text Savings Bank account with Current account and text Interest with Overdraft

A Savings Bank account is one in which small savings can be made.


We can earn a small amount of interest on the balance held in the savings account.


Current Account is generally for business purposes.


The bank will not pay any interest on the balance held therein but gives overdraft facility.

We have to submit a valid address proof along with our form, such as:
  1. Ration Card
  2. Passport
  3. Driving License
  4. Electricity Bill, etc.

Since Ration Card is the most common address proof, I will write Ration Card here.


You can write the document that you prefer to give as address proof.

You have to write the place from where you belong.

  • to whom the account holder wants the amount in the savings account to go to
  • in case of the account holder’s death due to any reason.

  • a minor, for eg, our own child, niece, nephew

  • to receive the amount on their behalf
  • in case of the account holder’s death due to any reason.

A person who already has a bank account in the same branch of that bank has to introduce us.

Show Ration Card, Voter ID card

When we go to the bank, we have to
  • take a photocopy of our Ration Card and Voter ID Card
  • along with the original Ration Card and Voter ID card for verification
  • and our completed application form.

If you have furnished other documents as proof of identity and address, make sure that you have a copy of those.


We will also have to ensure that we have pasted our passport size photo on page 5.

The verifying officer will check if
  • the form is filled properly
  • and the documents are correct.

Once the verification is done, our application will be processed.


Our savings bank account will be opened in that branch of bank.


We can now deposit whatever amount we wish to save in this account.
