Title Slide

Hello Everyone. Welcome to this tutorial on How to Dub using Audacity.
Slide Number 2

Learning Objectives

In this tutorial, we will learn to dub or record an audio using Audacity.
Slide Number 3

System Requirement

To record this tutorial I am using
  • Ubuntu Linux OS version 14.04.
  • Audacity version 2.1.2
  • A headset with an audio input
Slide Number 4

Installation

I have already installed Audacity 2.1.2 on my Linux system.

For more details, refer to the Translation and Dubbing Series on our website http://spoken-tutorial.org/

Narration only Now let us open Audacity to dub or record a script.
Click on Start Menu and type Audacity

Click on Audacity

If you are a Windows user, click on Start Menu and type Audacity in the search box.

Click on Audacity from the displayed list.

Point out the empty project on your screen This will open an empty Audacity project on your screen.
Click on Dash Home If you are in a Ubuntu Linux, click on Dash Home.
Go to Search Box, type Audacity click on Audacity icon Type Audacity in the Search Box

Click on the Audacity icon.

Point out the empty project on your screen This will open an empty Audacity project on your screen.
Point out It’s appearance/look

Show Menu bar

In the main Menu bar, we can see various options.

Like File, Edit, View, Transport, Tracks and others.

Point out the VCR controls under the Menu bar

Pause, Play, Stop, Rewind, Forward and Record

Point out the Transport Toolbar

We will learn about some of these in detail, as we go along.

Below the main Menu bar, we will see the VCR controls such as

Pause, Play, Stop, Rewind, Forward and Record.

This is also called as Transport Toolbar.

Point out the Audacity Tools Toolbar Next to this, we will find the Audacity Tools Toolbar.
Point out Selection Tool and Time Shift Tool. It has Selection Tool and Time Shift Tool, which we will use in this tutorial.
Point to Selection Tool By default, the Selection Tool is active.
Point out the Project Rate in Audacity At the bottom left of the Audacity window, we can see the Project Rate.

Click on the drop-down arrow.

We recommend to keep the Project Rate in Audacity file to 22050 Hz.

Low Project Rate will ensure low file size of the final mp3 file.

Show screenshot of the Timed-script As an example, I will use a Hindi script to record.

This script has begin timings of each sentence.

I will be using these noted timings while editing the audio track later.

Slide 5

Script

To practise alongside, the same script has been provided in the Code Files link of this tutorial.

Please download and use it.

Play the original tutorial Stop the player First I will play the original English tutorial named as ’’What is Spoken Tutorial’’-A two minute overview.

“Audio file”

Let me stop here

Narration only Now I am going to dub this into Hindi language using Audacity.
Narration only Switch to Audacity again.
Click on Record button in Audacity To record, click on the Record button in the Transport Toolbar and narrate the script.
Start the narration “Audio file”

Point out to Pause button

Click on Pause button

Click on the Pause  button in the Transport toolbar to pause the recording.

We can also press the P key on the keyboard, to pause while recording.

Narration only Remember to give a pause for 1 or 2 seconds in between two sentences.
Again press P to resume the recording

Start the next narration

Continue to narrate the script.

To resume the recording, again press the P key.

“Audio file”

स्वयं सीखने के लिए <loud banging noise>

स्वयं सीखने के लिए निर्मित सेशन की रिकॉर्डिंग है।

Click on the STOP button

Now, click on the STOP button in the Transport toolbar to stop the recording.

You may have noticed that there was a loud noise while narrating the sentence. So I had to repeat it.

I will teach you how to rectify this problem later in the series.

Locate Audio Tracks - Stereo Track and Mono Track Now, look at the Tracks.
Narration only The spikes are the waveforms of the audio.
Point out Mono Track If there is only one track, then the audio is recorded in Mono mode.
Point out Stereo Track And if there are 2 tracks, then the audio is recorded in Stereo mode.
Point out the Label on the left panel This will be mentioned explicitly in the Label area on the left panel.
Point to the two tracks on the Audio Track By default, the recording mode is set to Stereo.

We have recorded in Stereo mode, so we can see two tracks over here.

Narration only But we can also set Mono mode as the default mode.
Click on the Audio Track Click on the Audio Track.
Click on the Tracks option

Click on Stereo Track to Mono

In the Main menu, go to the Tracks option.

Click on the option Stereo Track to Mono.

This will convert the stereo track  to mono.

Press Ctrl + Z keys Let us revert back to Stereo Track by pressing Ctrl + Z keys.
Narration only Now let’s record further in the same file.
Narration only Ideally, we should record in one go so that we get a single audio track. Now, let me adjust the track for a better view.
Click on Selection Tool. Click on the Selection Tool.
Click at the end of the Audio Track Click at the end of the previous recording on the Audio Track.
Click on the Record button

Start the narration

Now, click on the Record button to start the recording again and narrate the next sentence.

“Audio file”

... "हम FOSS का प्रचार करते हैं जो डिजिटल डिवाइड को मिटाने के लिए उपयोगी है”

Click on the Stop button Click on the Stop button to stop the recording.
Point out the second narration that will come in another Stereo Track. Please note.

This audio clip will appear in a separate Stereo Track.

Narration only Once we press Stop button and restart recording, the audio clip will always appear on a new track. Let me again adjust the track for a better view.

Merge Tracks Next, we will learn how to merge all these audio tracks into a single track.
Choose Time Shift Tool Choose Time Shift Tool.
Select the audio clip from the second track Select the audio clip from the second track by clicking on it.
Drag-and-drop it at the end of the first audio track. Drag-and-drop it at the end of the first audio track.
Point ot the 2 clips >> move the second clip back and forth Notice here the 2 clips appear to be merged.

But it is actually not so.

Click on the joint between the 2 clip  >> move the clip back and forth

To merge 2 audio clips, simply click on the joint between the clips.

They are now merged into a single clip.

Move the clip Now we can move the whole clip wherever we want.
Point to the second audio track Notice here - the second audio track is now empty.
Click on the 'X' button in the label area at the extreme left We can remove it by clicking on the 'X' button in the Label area.
Point out that the track is removed Observe that the track has been removed.

It’s a good habit to remove empty tracks.

Save the audio file Once we are done with the recording, we should save the file.
Go to the File menu

Click on Save Project.

To do so, go to the File menu and click on Save Project.
Click on Don’t show this warning again.

Click on OK.

A dialog box will open. And it will ask for a filename.
Give filename as Hindi-What-is-ST I am giving the filename as "Hindi-What-is-ST".
Point out that it will ask for the location Next it will ask for the location where it has to be saved.
Choose Desktop and click on Save I will choose Desktop and then click on Save.

This will save the project as 'Hindi-What-is-ST.aup' file

Narration only Note: we have only saved the project file.

The audio is not yet in the format that can play in any audio/video player.

Close the project file Now close this project file.
Open Hindi-What-is-ST.aup file Next, let us see how to open an existing project file.

On the Desktop, we had saved the file Hindi-What-is-ST.aup.

Narration only

Whenever we save the Audacity Project file, it will also create a folder named as Projectname_data.

In my case it is Hindi-What-is-ST_data.

This folder contains the Audacity data for each project.

If this folder is deleted or moved to another location, then we cannot open and edit the Audacity project.

Double Click on Hindi-What-is-ST.aup Double-click on Hindi-What-is-ST.aup  to open it.
Locate the audio track You can see the audio track inside.

<<PAUSE>>

Close the project file Now let us close this project file.
