00:01 | Welcome to the spoken tutorial on File Handling and Bookmarks in FileZilla. |
00:08 | In this tutorial we will learn to-View, edit, rename and delete files in the remote machine and Add and manage Bookmarks |
00:22 | To record this tutorial, I'm using
Ubuntu Linux OS– 14.04 FileZilla – 3.10.2 And a workingInternet connection. |
00:39 | To practice this tutorial, you should have working knowledge of any one operating system. |
00:46 | To learn aboutLinux OS, please watch theLinux spoken tutorials on this website. |
00:54 | Let us begin.I am already in the FileZilla interface. |
01:00 | Let me show you how to connect to the remote machine without entering too many details. |
01:07 | Locate the Quickconnect button in the Quickconnect bar. |
01:12 | Now, select the drop-down arrow next it. |
01:17 | It will display a list of remote machines which we were connected to earlier. |
01:23 | We have connected to only one machine and the same is displayed here.Select that. |
01:31 | Provide the remote machine's password, if prompted and press OK. |
01:37 | Since I had saved it earlier, it does not prompt me to do so here. We are now connected to our remote machine. |
01:47 | Browse to the SpokenTutorial folder in the remote machine, which we created earlier. |
01:54 | Now, from my local machine, I will upload a document. This has already been explained here. |
02:03 | Notice here- the document sample.odt has been uploaded to the remote machine. |
02:11 | I want to rename this document. To do so, right-click on the file and select Rename option. |
02:20 | The filename is now editable. |
02:24 | I will rename as script.odt and press Enter key. |
02:32 | Now the file sample.odt has been renamed as script.odt. |
02:41 | Similarly, we can rename any file or folder in both the local and remote machines. |
02:48 | Is it possible to view or edit the files from the remote location?Yes, it is possible! |
02:56 | Let’s see how to do so. Right-click on the file script.odt |
03:03 | Select view/edit. |
03:06 | The file script.odt starts downloading. It gets saved in the local machine's temporary folder. |
03:16 | Then it opens in its default application. As I downloaded a Writer document, it will open in LibreOffice Writer. |
03:29 | In the opened document, let me delete the first two lines and click on Save. |
03:37 | Now close the Writer document. |
03:40 | Immediately, a popup dialog box opens. |
03:45 | It says, “A file previously opened has been changed” along with the file information. It also says, “Upload this file back to server?” |
03:59 | And there is a check box, “Finish editing and delete local file”.I will select the check box and click on Yes. |
04:10 | Now the locally edited file is uploaded back to the remote machine. |
04:16 | So viewing and editing the files in the remote machine is quite easy. Note:The software required to view/edit the file must be installed in your local machine. |
04:31 | In my case, it was LibreOffice Writer. |
04:36 | To set the file permissions, right-click on the file and select File Permissions. |
04:44 | The Change file attributes dialog box opens. |
04:50 | Change the permissions as per your requirement. To know more about permissions, go thorough the File attributes tutorial in the Linux series. |
05:02 | I will keep the permissions as it is and click on OK. |
05:08 | To delete a file from the remote machine, right-click on the file and select Delete. |
05:15 | A dialog box named Confirmation needed opens. |
05:21 | Click Yes. |
05:23 | Now the file script.odt is deleted from the remote machine. Please note: This deletion is permanent. |
05:35 | Do we always need to browse the specific location for file transfer? No, we can bookmark the locations and access it easily later. |
05:48 | Before adding bookmarks, we have to copy the current connection to the Site Manager. |
05:55 | To do so, click on File menu.Select “Copy current connection to Site manager”. |
06:04 | Site Manager window opens. |
06:07 | On the left, rename the New site as “my site”. |
06:13 | The click on OK. |
06:16 | Now in the Main menu bar, select Bookmarks. |
06:21 | It lists 2 options – Add bookmark and Manage bookmarks. |
06:29 | Let me select Add bookmark. |
06:32 | The New bookmark dialog box opens. |
06:36 | It has two types-
Global bookmark – This bookmark will work for all the connected machines. Site-specific bookmark – this is for the specific remote machine. |
06:50 | I will choose “Site-specific bookmark”. |
06:54 | In the Name field, I will type – Spoken |
07:00 | The next segment is Paths. This displays the local machine & remote machine's current path. |
07:09 | If you wish to change it, click on Browse.I want to bookmark the current locations only, so I will skip this. |
07:19 | Click on OK. |
07:21 | Now these locations are bookmarked. |
07:25 | To access the bookmarks, go to the Menubar & select Bookmarks. |
07:32 | Here you can see the name of the bookmark - spoken, which we created.
Click on it. |
07:40 | Now we are automatically redirected to the bookmarked location.
