Conversational AI Tools

Conversational AI software tools:
  • They interact with users using natural language through text or voice
  • Understanding its intent and give the response
  • AI tools are powered and rely on Large Language Models as its core technology

AI Tools

We will focus on using conversational AI tools to code efficiently.
  • I will use ChatGPT throughout this series.
  • Learners are welcome to explore other AI tools as well.
Let us explore the web interface of ChatGPT.
Open Google Chrome and highlight the address bar

Type chatgpt.com and press Enter.

Open a browser on your computer.

I am using Firefox web browser.

In the address bar, type chatgpt.com and press Enter.

Log in by entering the required credentials if not done before.

I am already logged in.

Highlight: various options on the left side panel of the page Once I am logged in, various options are available to use.

For example, on the left side panel, options such as New chat, Search chats, Library, and Projects are available.

This is the interface of ChatGPT as of October 2025. However, it may change in the near future.

Highlight: the user name in the bottom left of the page At the bottom left, my username appears, and it says Free as of now.

It means that I am using the Free version of ChatGPT.

I will use the Free version throughout this series.

Note that the free version may have certain limitations, such as message usage caps.

Click on the username to view additional options, including Help, Settings, Personalization, etc.

Highlight: Settings in the pop-up when clicking on the user name Click on Settings to view the various options available.
Highlight: Personalization in the left corner of Settings Let us click on Personalization.
Scroll down in Personalization

Nickname: enter your own name.Occupation: Service

Click on Save

Here, I can share details like my nickname, occupation, and more.

Pause the tutorial and enter the details as shown.

Click on Save.

Once I do, ChatGPT uses them to personalize its responses for future conversations.

Highlight: Advanced in the Personalization

Click the corresponding dropdown

Scroll down to see the Advanced option.

Click on the drop down to see the various fields.

Highlight: Web search and Code By default, web search is enabled.

This lets ChatGPT automatically search the web for answers.

Let us ask a few questions to see when ChatGPT searches the web.
Highlight: The X symbol in the left corner Close the Personalization tab.
Highlight: Ask Anything in the middle of the page

Type: Who is the current prime minister of India? Press Enter.

Type the following prompt: Who is the current prime minister of India? And, press Enter.
Highlight: searching the web message Since web search is on, ChatGPT performs a live search while drafting the response.
Highlight: the generated response in the chat window In its response, it says that

The current Prime Minister of India is Narendra Modi.

Note that the content of the response may differ, even if you repeat the same questions.

Highlight: Wikipedia and other references in the generated response ChatGPT also provides link to the websites from which it retrieved this information.
Let us ask something related to C++ programming.
Highlight: New chat in the top left Click on New chat. A new chat window opens.
Highlight: Current Prime Minister of India under Chats My previous chat appears here at the bottom left corner.
Highlight: Ask Anything

Type: Explain the difference between std::vector and std::array in C++ with examples. Press Enter.

In the new chat, type the following.

The generated response

ChatGPT will not search the web for this.

So, web search is not needed for static knowledge.

For example, programming concepts, historical facts, etc.

Highlight:

On the other hand, web search is needed for dynamic knowledge.

For example, news, stock prices, etc.
