Welcome to this Spoken Tutorial on Portrait Colouring and Detailing using Inkscape.

In this tutorial we will,
  • Draw shadows and light parts of the drawing using Bezier tool
  • Fill color by picking an appropriate color from the reference image

  • Mac OS version 10.14.6
  • Inkscape version 1.2.2

Code Files

The SVG file used in this tutorial is provided in the Code Files link.


Please download and extract the file.


Make a copy and then use it while practising.

Open Inkscape I have opened the Creating Vector Portrait Illustration.svg file.


This is the same file used in the previous tutorial.

Canvas >> Select the drawn shape of the lips >>

Fill and Stroke window>>

Select Pick colors from image tool >> Canvas

Go to the Canvas.


Select the drawn shape of the lips.


Go to Fill and Stroke window

and click on Pick colors from image tool icon.


Pick colors from the lips of the duplicated reference image.


And fill it into the drawn shape of the lips.

Similarly, Select the each drawn shape individually.


Let us fill the color by picking color from the duplicated reference image.

Point to the reference image. Zoom in the canvas for accuracy while picking and filling colors.


If you find the colors from the reference image dull, select fresh colors from the palette.


You can find the palette at the bottom of the screen.

Choosing fresh colors will elevate the drawing and also add vibrancy to it.


Canvas >> Bezier tool.


Toolbar >> Select Pick colors from image tool

>> Canvas>> Fill and Stroke

>>Opacity

Select the entire drawing and reduce the Opacity.


Draw the shadows and highlights using the Bezier tool on the respective layers.


To draw shadows, focus on the darker areas of the reference image.


And to draw highlights, emphasize the lighter parts.


Shadows add depth to the drawing.

Highlights give a realistic look to it.


This helps in enhancing the drawing.


Click on Pick colors from image icon

and fill colors in the drawn shapes as shown.


Please change the opacity value to 100 after completing the drawing.

Canvas>>

Select all parts of the drawing >> Stroke paint>>

Click on No paint>> Canvas>> point towards the gap.

Select all parts of the drawing


Go to the Stroke paint tab.


Click on No paint to remove the outlines from drawing.

Canvas After setting the opacity to 100, the shadow and light parts appear darker.


We need to adjust the opacity for each drawn shape as required.


Add more details as needed.


Detailing in the drawing makes it closely match it with the reference image.

Layers panel Let us go to Layers panel.


Click the lock icon of the Reference image layer to unlock the layer.


Select Reference image layer.


Click on the Delete selected items icon to delete the layer.

Point to the Canvas. Let us now make the illustration more attractive.


Let us give an outline for the created illustration.


To do this, select the drawn illustration and duplicate it.

Path>> Click on Combine

>> Edit >> Click on Cut

>> Edit >> Click on Paste In Place

Click on Combine in the Path menu.


Then, choose Cut from the Edit menu.


Go to the Layers panel and create a new layer named Outline.


Go to Edit and click on Paste In Place.

Layers panel>> Toobar>>

Canvas>> Layers panel

Go to the Layers panel.

Let us create a new layer and name it as ‘Background’.


Let's move the 'Background' layer below all the other layers.


Go to the Toolbar.

Select the Rectangle tool.


Draw a rectangle on the Canvas on the same layer.


Fill it with a suitable color.


Layers panel>> Arrange the Outline

Layer >> Path>> Click on Outset


Show this as text while editing.

Let's go to the Layers panel,


Move the Outline layer above the Background layer.


Select Path from the Outline layer.


Then go to Path and click on Outset.


Mac users can increase the value by pressing the Command key and opening parenthesis(")") key a few times.


Linux and Windows users can press Ctrl key and opening parenthesis(")") key to increase the value.


Now, we got the outline of the illustration on the Canvas.


Choose white for the outline color.


Delete unwanted nodes from the outline.

To do this, Go to the Toolbar and click on Edit paths by nodes.

Select the unwanted nodes by dragging over them on the Canvas.

Press Delete on your keyboard to remove the selected nodes.

Canvas >> Point to the illustration>>

Layers panel>> hide the duplicated reference image

by clicking on the eye icon of the reference image layer.

The beautiful portrait illustration of the photo is completed.


In a similar way, we can create various other illustrations using this method.
