System Requirements


To record this tutorial, I am using

  • Ubuntu Linux OS v22.04
  • Koha v24.05
  • Firefox v131.0.3
  • A working internet connection.


To record this tutorial, I am using

  • Koha version 24 point 05
  • Firefox version 131 point 0 point 3


I also have a working internet connection.

Pre-requisites

To follow this tutorial, you should have
  • Koha installed on your system and
  • Admin access in Koha.


If not, refer to the Koha Installation tutorial on this site.

Also, you should have knowledge of Library Science.

MARC Framework


  • Frameworks can be edited or deleted and
  • Superlibrarian can create their own frameworks, for content specific to their libraries.


Before we begin, note that,

  • Frameworks can be edited or deleted
  • Superlibrarian can create their own frameworks, for content specific to their libraries.
Show Koha login interface Let us switch to the Koha Interface.
Username as Bella and Password as Library@1.


Click on Log in

To create MARC framework, we have to login as superlibrarian.

So, I will type the username as Bella and the password as Library@1.

From the library field drop down, select Spoken Tutorial Library.

Now click on Log in button.

If you had given a different username and password, then type that.

Show Koha staff Interface The Koha staff interface opens.
Show Koha interface >> Koha Administration Click on the Koha Administration module.
Highlight Koha Administration

Go to the section Catalog

Click on- MARC bibliographic framework

The Koha Administration page opens.

Scroll down and go to the Catalog section.

Click on MARC bibliographic framework.

Cursor on MARC bibliographic frameworks A new page MARC bibliographic frameworks opens with some predefined frameworks.
Click on +New framework Click on New framework.

Framework code:

Description:

New framework page opens, prompting us to fill in some details.


Point to the red asterisk fields On this page, all the fields in red are mandatory.
Cursor on Framework code >> type JOU In the field for Framework code, we will type JOU.
Cursor on Description: >> type Journals For Description, we will type Journals.
Click Submit Next, click on the Submit button at the bottom.
MARC bibliographic frameworks page

Success message

We are back to MARC bibliographic frameworks page.

The text highlighted in blue says Framework added successfully.

New page >> go to the Code JOU i.e. Journals On this page, scroll down to the Code JOU that is Journals.
Cursor on Actions tab

Click on MARC structure

From the Actions tab on its right click on MARC structure.

From dropdown select Serial

A new page MARC bibliographic Framework Journals JOU opens.


For Create framework for JOU Journals using field, from dropdown select Serial.


Next, click on the OK button.

Show 1 to 20 of 355

This will bring us back to MARC Framework Journals JOU page.


This page shows tags from 1 to 20 of 355 tags.


However, you may see more number of tags on your screen.

Tags in MARC Framework


  • There are total 355 default tags
  • I will select only a few tags for Journals
  • You may choose tags as per your requirement

Click on Action>Edit tag Now I will demonstrate how to Edit a tag.

Actions>Edit tag

Let’s edit tag number 000, LEADER.

For that go to the last column and click on the Actions button.

In the drop down we can see:* Edit tag
  • View subfields
  • Edit subfields and
  • Delete options


Click on Edit tag Let us click on Edit tag.

Here, we will Modify tag 000.


On this page, the following fields are filled by default,

  • Description in staff interface and
  • Description in OPAC


Note that:

The Description in the staff interface will show up in the staff client.

And the Description in OPAC will show up on the MARC view in the OPAC.

Cursor on Repeatable We will check the checkbox for the Repeatable field.

It allows us to add multiples of that tag.

Cursor on Mandatory Koha will by default check the checkbox for Mandatory field.

Important Note

  • If you click Repeatable then, the field will have a plus sign next to it in Cataloging.
  • This is basically required for more than 3 authors or editors.
  • It allows you to add many more details of the same tag

Important Note


If 'Mandatory' is clicked or auto-selected by Koha then-

  • the record will not be allowed to save
  • unless you allocate a value to this particular tag

First indicator default value:

We will leave the other fields as it is.
Cursor on Authorized value: If you select a value here, the indicators will be limited to the authorized value list.


We will leave it as it is.

Click Save changes Scroll down and click Save changes to save the modification.

Repeatable >> Yes

Mandatory >>Yes

On this page note that, for tag number 000 Leader Repeatable and Mandatory will appear as Yes.
Narration only Next, let us learn how to enable the Authority file.
Go to the top left of the page click on Administration. For that go to the top left of the page and click on Administration.

Click on System preferences Click on System preferences.

Cursor on Authorities From the left side menu click on Authorities.

Cursor on General Under the section General, we can see 2 columns one is Preference and another one is Value.


Now, start changing the Value of some Preferences as follows:

  • AuthDisplayHierarchy>> select Show
  • For AutoCreateAuthorities >> generate
  • RequireChoosingExistingAuthority
  • UseAuthoritiesForTracings>> Use


For AuthDisplayHierarchy, select Show from the drop-down, if not selected by default.


For AutoCreateAuthorities, from the dropdown select generate.


Scroll down to RequireChoosingExistingAuthority, from the dropdown select don't require if not selected by default.


For UseAuthoritiesForTracings, from the dropdown select Use if not selected by default.


Leave all other default values as it is.

Click on Save all Authorities preferences Now click on Save all Authorities preferences button at the top.
Pop message in a black box confirms:

Saved preferences AuthDisplayHierarchy

Saved preferences AutoCreateAuthorities

Saved preferences RequireChoosingExistingAuthority

A message in a black box pops up and confirms

Saved preferences.
