To record this tutorial, I am using* Ubuntu Linux OS version 22 point 04
  • Koha version 24 point 05
  • Firefox version 131 point 0 point 3

I also have a working internet connection.

Pre-requisites

To follow this tutorial, you should have
  • Koha installed on your system and
  • Admin access in Koha.

If not, refer to the Koha Installation tutorial on this site.

Also, you should have knowledge of Library Science.

Let us switch to the Koha Interface.

Show Koha login interface This will open the Koha Login page.
Username as Bella and Password as Library@1.

Click on Log in

To add a new patron category, we have to login as superlibrarian.

So, I will type the username as Bella and the password as Library@1.

For the library field, from the drop down select Spoken Tutorial Library.

Now click on the Login button.

If you had given a different username and password, then type that.

Show Koha staff Interface This will lead us to the Koha staff interface.
Click on Koha administration Click on the Koha administration module.
Scroll down to Patrons and Circulation>> Patron categories Scroll down to Patrons and Circulation and click on Patron categories.
Cursor on Patron categories A new page Patron categories opens.
Click on +New category To add a new patron category click on New category.
Cursor on New category A New category page opens prompting us to fill in some details.
Point to the fields marked in red. Notice that all the fields marked in red are mandatory.

Let us fill in a few details.

Highlight Enrollment period: In months:50 For Enrollment period, In months field enter 50.

Password expiration

I am leaving the Password expiration field blank.

It sets a time limit for how long a patron's password remains valid.

Highlight Age required as 18 years For Age required field enter 18 years.
Point to Upperage limit

Enrollment fees

I am leaving the Upper age limit, and Enrollment fee fields blank.

These fields are set as per the library policy.

Point to Overdue notice required For Overdue notice required field, select Yes to send the overdue notices.
Scroll down.

Point to Lost items in staff interface

Scroll down.

For the Lost items in staff interface field from the dropdown select Shown.

Point to Hold fees For Hold fee field I am leaving it blank.

If you have any policy then charge accordingly.

Cursor on Category type: >> From the drop-down select Adult For the Category type field, from the drop-down select Adult.
Cursor on Can be guarantee >> From the drop-down select No For Can be guarantee field, select No from the drop down.
Cursor on Library limitation: >> Select Spoken Tutorial Library. For Library Limitations, select Spoken Tutorial Library.
Scroll Down.

Point to Password reset in OPAC

Password change in OPAC

Scroll Down.

For the fields,

  • Password reset in OPAC and
  • Password change in OPAC, from drop-down select Allowed.

This allows resetting and changing passwords in OPAC.

Point to Minimum password Here, we can set the Minimum password length.

I am leaving it blank to use the system's default length.

Point to Requires strong password For Require strong password, select Yes/No as per the policy.

I am selecting Yes.

Point to Block expire patrons For Block expire patrons, from the drop-down select Block.
Point to Default privacy For Default privacy, from the drop-down select Default.
Point to Exclude from local holds priority For Exclude from local holds priority, from the drop-down select No.
Scroll Down.

Point to Default messaging preferences* Item due

  • Advance notice
  • Hold filled
  • Item check-in
  • Item check-out
  • Auto renewal (Except)
  • Hold reminder
Scroll down.

For this patron category, check all Default messaging preferences as shown.

Advance notice - Days in advance For Advance notice, under Days in advance select 3 days.
Click on Save To complete, click on the Save button at the bottom of the page.
Highlight Patron categories page.

Success message

This will bring us back to Patron categories page.

The text highlighted in blue confirms the Patron category inserted successfully.

Click on the home icon and stay logged in.

To logout from the current session, go to the top right corner of the page.
