  • Koha version 24.05
  • Firefox version 131.0.3
To record this tutorial, I am using
  • Ubuntu Linux OS version 22 point 04
  • Koha version 24 point 05
  • Firefox version 131 point 0 point 3

I also have a working internet connection.

To follow this tutorial, you should have,
  • Koha installed on your system and
  • Admin a access to Koha.

If not, refer to the Koha Installation tutorial on this site.

Let us begin now.

I have already installed Koha on my system.


Let me go to the Firefox browser and type 127 point 0 point 0 point 0 colon 8080.


This will open the Koha Login page.

Log into Koha with Username as koha_library

and Password as koha123.

Click on Login button

I will Log in using the credential that I had set earlier during the installation.

So, I will type the username as koha_library and the password as koha123.

We suggest that for practicing you should enter the details as demonstrated.

However, if you wish to enter different details, then keep a track of it.

Click on the Log in button.

Show login page The Koha web setup has two activities.


First is web Installation and second is Onboarding.

Web installer sets up and configures the database.


Onboarding creates a library, patron, item type etc, to start using the Koha.

Highlight Choose your language

Show language drop-down >> en

Choose your language page opens.

Here, we will pick the language for the Koha.

Go to the field Select a language.

From the drop-down, select en for English, if it is not already selected.

Click Continue to the next step

Highlight Check Perl dependencies

Highlight the text Choose your language

To continue, click on Continue to the next step button at the bottom left.

Check Perl dependencies page opens.

Did you notice the change in the text colour for Choose your language?

It has turned green.

This implies that the step is successfully completed.

Highlight the 2 messages

All required Perl modules appear to be installed.

All dependencies installed.

Note the following messages:

Click on Continue to the next step button. To proceed click on Continue to the next step button at the bottom of the page.
Highlight Database settings The Database settings page opens.
Highlight to the values displayed Here Database settings values given during the Koha installation are displayed.
Click on Continue to the next step button. Go through them and click on Continue to the next step button.

Highlight the message

  • Database Koha_library exists.
  • User Koha_library has all required privileges on database Koha_library.

Click on Continue to the next step button.

Observe the message in green.

It says Connection established.

Also the following messages appear:

  • Database Koha_library exists. and
  • User Koha_library has all required privileges on database Koha_library.


This means that the database is successfully created.

Click on Continue to the next step button.

Set up a database

Now we're ready to create the database tables and fill them with some default data

This loads the Set up database page.

The page says - Now we're ready to create the database tables and fill them with some default data.

Click on the Continue to the next step button

Show a timer/sand clock

Highlight Success

Click on the Continue to the next step button

So, click the Continue to the next step button to create the database tables.

This step may take some time.

On completion of this step, Success page appears.

It says Database tables created.

Once you see this message, proceed by clicking on Continue to the next step button.

Highlight Install basic configuration settings This brings us to the Install basic configuration settings page.

Now we are ready to do some basic configuration to use Koha.

Click on the Continue to the next step button So click the Continue to the next step button.
Highlight Select your MARC flavor

Highlight the Information about the MARC

This leads us to the page, Select your MARC flavor.

Read the information provided on this page.

Select MARC21 MARC stands for Machine Readable Cataloging.

A MARC record contains bibliographic record information about an item.

MARC21 is used globally.

UNIMARC tends to be used in few European countries.

We will select the MARC21 here.

Click on the Continue to the next step button. To confirm the selection, click on Continue to the next step button.

Highlight MARC Frameworks: MARC21.

Now we come to the Selecting default settings page.

Here first we will select the setting for the MARC Frameworks: MARC21.

Observe that the fields under the mandatory sections are already selected.

Simple MARC 21

Scroll down the Optional section.

Select all the fields as shown here.

Also, read the details for each option carefully.

Scroll down, Highlight Other Data section

Next, scroll down to select the setting for the Other data.

Here you will notice that all the mandatory fields are already selected.

Allow access to the following

Under the Optional field, select the fields as shown here.

Also, read the details for each option carefully.

Click on Import button Now click on Import button.

This will enable all the selected functionalities in Koha.

Highlight Default data-loaded We are now brought to the Default data loaded page.

Highlight Basic installation completed.

Scroll down this page.

It says Basic installation complete.

Read the information displayed on the screen.

Click on Set up some of Koha’s basic requirements button Click on the button, Set up some of Koha’s basic requirements.

Highlight Congratulations, installation complete.

This brings us to Installation complete page.

Here we see the message Congratulations, installation complete.

Which means that the installation is successfully completed.

Click on Begin the onboarding process button. Now, we will begin the onboarding.

Here we are prompted to enter the Library details.

Library Code: ST

Name: Spoken Tutorial Library

Point to the red asterisk fields

Highlight instruction at the bottom of the page


Administration › Libraries and group

Fill in the fields Library code and Name for the library, as I have done here.

Some important things to note are-

  • There should be no space in the Library code
  • It should be less than 10 characters long.
  • This code will be used as a unique identifier in the database.


The fields marked in red are mandatory.

We can add more libraries and settings later through the Administration module.

Click on the Submit button Click on the Submit button to create the library.

Point to the success message

The page Create a patron category opens.

The text highlighted in green confirms that the Library created!

Default privacy from drop down select Default.

Enrollment period in months: 50

Show only the filled details in the video.

I have filled in the details as shown here.

You can pause the video to fill in the details and then resume.

Click on Submit

Now, click on the Submit button to create the patron category.

Here we will create a patron with the superlibrarian permissions.

  • Patron category as Library Staff
Under Administrator identity, fill in the superlibrarian details as shown here.

Note that under Administrator account permissions, superlibrarian is mentioned by default.

Username: Bella

Password:

Under Administrator login, we will set the login credentials for superlibrarian.

I will enter;

Username as Bella and

Password as Library@1

Confirm password

To reconfirm, enter the same password, Library@1, in the Confirm password field.
Narration Please remember this username and password.

This will be used later to give rights and permissions to the Staff.

Highlight the text Details To create another patron and To edit patron permissions are mentioned at the bottom of the page.
Click on Submit at the bottom

I will click on the Submit button to proceed ahead.

Create a new item type page opens.

Point to the message: Administrator account created! The text highlighted in green says, Administrator account created.

Highlight the field Item type code

Read the information provided here on the screen.

The first field here is Item type code.

It is a short identifier for each item type.

Highlight BK I will enter the Item type code as BK.
Highlight Description field The Description field describes the item type.
Highlight Books Here, I will type Books.

Details To create another item type and its settings are mentioned at the bottom of the page.

Click on Submit button

Now, click on the Submit button to create the item type.

Create a new circulation rule page opens.

Now we can go ahead and Create a new circulation rule.

These rules may vary from library to library.

For this tutorial, we will set the following rules.

I have filled in the details as shown here.

You may pause the video here, fill in the details and resume.

Click on Submit

Highlight Web installer > Complete

To complete creation of circulation rules click on the Submit button.

Web installer, Complete page opens.

Highlight Congratulations you have finished and are ready to use Koha

The text highlighted in green says Circulation rule created!

Notice the text in green color with tick mark!

It means, Installation and Onboarding is completed successfully.

Also, you will see the message Congratulations you have finished and ready to use Koha.

Click on the button Start using Koha

Show staff interface

Show logout steps

Now click on the button Start using Koha to explore Koha.

This will bring us to the Koha Login Interface.

To login we will use the superlibrarian credentials.

I will type the Username as Bella and Password as Library@1

For Select Library, My library is selected by default.

Here I will select the Spoken Tutorial Library.

Now click on Log in.

The Koha staff interface will open.

We will explore this interface as we go ahead in this series.

For now we will logout.

To logout, click on Bella, Spoken Tutorial Library on top right of the page.

From the dropdown select Logout.
