Go to the Standard Toolbar -> Point to Master Slide icon. | Click on the Master Slide icon in the Standard Toolbar. |
Click on the View menu -> Master Slide | Another way to access this is by clicking on the View menu in the menu bar.
Then on the Master Slide option. |
Point to the three slides in Slide Pane.

In Master Slide view, notice only three slides appear in the Slides Pane.
These are Master slides that have already been used in this presentation. |
Go to the top right corner of the Toolbar -> Point to all three Master view toolbars.
Point to New Master, Delete Master and Close Master view icon. |
On the top right corner of the Standard Toolbar, notice three new Master View tools are now visible.
‘New Master’, ‘Delete Master’ and ‘Close Master View’. |

Narration only: | First, let’s learn how to change the background of this presentation. |
Right-click on ‘Slide 1’.
Context menu -> New Master. |
Right-click on slide 1 in the Slides pane.
From the Context menu, click on the ‘New Master’ option. |
Go to the Standard Toolbar -> Point to New Master icon | Alternatively, you can also click on the ‘New Master’ icon in the Standard Toolbar |
Point to new master slide >> Highlight the name Default | Notice a new blank Master slide named ‘Default’ is added after slide 1. |
Click on the Slide -> Properties. | Click on the Slide menu in the menu bar and then on the Properties option. |
Point to the Slide Setup dialog box.
Click on the Background tab. |
The Slide Setup or Page Setup dialog box opens up.
Click on the Background tab at the top left in the dialog box. |
Click on the Bitmap button >> Go to the Bitmap section on the left side
Point to all images in the list. |
Then click on the Bitmap sub-tab and go to the Bitmap section on the left.
It has a list of images that can be used as a background for the slides. |
Go to the Fence image -> Click on it. | Locate the image named ‘Fence’ and then click on it. |
Point to the Preview section | In the Preview box, we immediately see the preview of the selected image. |
Move cursor slowly downwards | Leave all the other settings as default. |
Click the Ok. | And click on the OK button at the bottom right corner. |
Point to the slide in the Workspace. | Notice that the background of the new Master slide has now changed. |
Narration only: | Next, let’s learn to change the background colour of the entire Master Slide. |
Right-click outside the textbox -> Click on Properties.

From the context menu that appears, click on the Properties option. |
Point to Slide Setup dialog box.
Point to the Background tab. |
The Slide Setup or Page Setup dialog box opens up.
Go to the Background tab if not already selected. |
Click on the Color button.
Go to the Palette field on the left side. |
Then click on the Color sub-tab.
Now, move to the Palette section on the left. |
Point to the Palette drop-down -> standard | In the Palette drop-down, ‘standard’ option is selected by default.
If that is not so in your case, please select the ‘standard’ option. |
Go to the color list ->
Click on the color named Blue. |
From the color palette, click on any colour of your choice.
I will select Blue. |
Point to the New section. | The selected colour will be seen in the New box. |
Click the OK. | Now click on the OK button at the bottom right corner. |
Point to the slide in the Workspace.
|
Notice that the colour of the entire Master slide has changed.
The background image is now replaced with this colour. |
Narration only: | Next, let’s learn how to change the color of the text in this Master Slide.
This will make the text clearly visible against the new background. |
Select text in the Body textbox. | First, select all the text in the Body textbox. |
Right-click on the text -> Click on Character. | Right-click on the selected text.
From the context menu that appears, click on the Character option. |
Point to the Character dialog box >> Point to the Font Effect tab. | The Character dialog box opens up.
Here, click on the Font Effects tab. |
Click on the Font color drop-down.
Point to the drop-down >> click |
Click and expand the Font color drop-down as shown.
We can see another drop-down here. |
Point to the selected standard color pattern. | By default, ‘standard’ option is selected in this drop-down. |
Go to the color list -> click on the color named Yellow. | From the color palette, click on any colour of your choice.
I will select Yellow. |
Point to the Preview area. | The selected colour will be reflected in the text in the Preview area. |
Click the OK button. | Click the OK button at the bottom right corner. |
Click outside the textbox.
Point to the text in the body textbox. |
Click anywhere else outside the textbox.
Notice that the color of the body text has changed now. |
Narration only: | Let’s now learn how to add other design elements to this slide.
For example, let’s add a logo to our presentation. |
Only narration | We’ll draw an imaginary logo of our own. |
Drawing Toolbar -> Click on Insert Basic Shapes drop-down.
|
To do so, go to the Drawing Toolbar and then click on the ‘Insert Basic Shapes’ drop-down.
A variety of basic shapes are seen here. |
Click on Rectangle shape. | I will click on the ‘Rectangle’ shape.
If you prefer another shape, please choose that. |
Move the cursor to the top left corner of the title area in the slide.
Point to the cursor. |
Now move the cursor to the top left corner of the title area in the slide.
The cursor turns into a plus sign with a capital I subscript. |
Hold the left mouse button and drag >> Release the mouse button.

Hold the left mouse button and drag to draw a rectangle as shown here.
Now release the mouse button. |
Point to a Rectangle in the slide. | That is how a shape can be added in a Master slide. |
Adjust the size of the rectangle using the Control points | Adjust the size of the rectangle as per your preference, using the Control points. |
Narration only:
Right-click on the rectangle -> Click on the Area option. |
We will change the colour of this rectangle now.
So, right-click on the Rectangle and then click on the ‘Area’ option. |
Point to the Area dialog box.
Go to Area tab -> Point to the Color tab.
|
The Area dialog box appears on the screen.
In the Area tab, by default the Color sub-tab should already be selected. If not, please click on it. |
Select Light Orange 1 color. |
From the Palette section, select any colour of your choice.
I will select Light Orange 1. |
Point to the New section. | The selected colour will be seen in the New box. |
Click the OK. | Click the OK button at the bottom right corner. |
Point to the color of the rectangle. | Notice that the color of the rectangle has changed. |
Point to the text below | However, notice that the text below the orange rectangle is not visible.
Let’s learn how to make this text visible. |
Only narration | Make sure the rectangle is still selected. |
Go to the Formatting Toolbar -> Arrange icon -> Send to Back icon. | On the Formatting Toolbar, click on the drop-down of the Arrange icon.
Then click on the Send to Back option. |
Point to the text | Notice that the text becomes visible now. |
Click anywhere outside the textboxes. | Click anywhere else outside the textboxes. |
Go to the Sidebar -> Master Slide. | After all the formatting to the Master slide is done, click on the Master Slide section in the Sidebar. |
Go to Used in This Presentation’ field -> ’Default’ | In the ‘Used in This Presentation’ section, locate the Master slide named ‘Default’. |
Right-click on ’Default’ Master slide -> Apply to All Slide. | Right-click on the ‘Default’ Master slide and then click on the ‘Apply to All Slides’ option. |
Go to the Standard Toolbar -> Close Master View icon. | Finally, click on the Close Master View icon in the Standard Toolbar. |
Click on the ‘X’ icon on the top right corner. | Now close the Master Slide section for a better view. |
Point to all slides from top to bottom in the Slide Pane. | The formatting changes made in the Master Slide are applied to all slides in the presentation. |
Point to the orange rectangle

Also, notice that the orange rectangle is displayed on all the slides.
And, this rectangle can only be edited using the Master Slide. |
Only narration | The settings in Master slide overrides any formatting changes or layouts applied to slides. |
Only narration | Let’s check what happens now when we add a new slide. |
Click on the slide ‘Open Source Funny’ -> Right click on it -> New Slide option. | First, select the slide titled ‘Open Source Funny’ in the Slide Pane.
And insert a new slide as shown here. |
Point to the rectangle in the inserted slide. | Notice that the rectangle we added using Master Slide is visible in the new slide as well. |
Click on the Title textbox and type ‘Potential Alternatives’-> click outside the textbox. | Type ‘Potential Alternatives’ in the Title textbox and click outside the textbox. |
Go to Standard Toolbar -> Slide Layout icon -> ‘Title, 2 Content over Content’. | Click on the Slide Layout icon in the Standard Toolbar.
And select ‘Title, 2 Content over Content’ layout. |
Point to all Body text boxes and then Title textbox. | Now the inserted slide has three Body textboxes and a Title textbox. |
In the first textbox, type:
‘Strategy 1 PRO: Low cost CON: slow action’
‘Strategy 2 CON: High cost PRO: Fast Action’
‘Due to lack of funds, Strategy 1 is better Else Strategy 2 could be considered’ |
Enter some content in the Body textboxes of the new slide, as shown here.

All text to be changed to black/Automatic colour On the first slide - spacing is required |
Let’s revisit all the slides and adjust the colour and spacing of the text on each one. |
Ctrl + S, Click on the X icon | We will now save all these changes for future use and then close the presentation file. |
