00:33 | To follow this tutorial, learner should be familiar with basic Geography. |
00:41 | Let us open the Marble application in Ubuntu Linux OS. |
00:46 | Click on Dash Home. |
00:49 | In the Search bar, type Marble. |
00:53 | Marble icon is seen. |
00:56 | Double-click on it to open the Marble application. |
01:02 | Let us open the Marble application in Windows 10 OS. |
01:07 | In the Search bar, type Marble. |
01:11 | Marble icon appears in the list. |
01:14 | Click on it, to open the Marble application. |
01:18 | This is the interface of Marble Virtual Globe. |
01:22 | Interface has two sections, left panel and topographical map of earth. |
01:31 | On the top left corner of the map we can see an Overview Map of the globe. |
01:38 | Observe that the Overview Map has a small white circle. |
01:43 | This circle depicts a particular location on the globe. |
01:48 | Now I will rotate the globe. |
01:51 | As I rotate, observe the changes in the position of the circle on the overview map. |
01:58 | At the bottom left corner of the map we have a Scale bar. |
02:03 | Scale bar shows the ratio between actual distance and distance shown on the map. |
02:10 | On the top right corner of the topographical map we can see a compass. |
02:16 | It shows the four directions north, south, east and west. |
02:25 | As per our convenience we can change the location of Overview map, Scale bar and Compass. |
02:37 | On the right side of the map, we see a white circular tool named as windrose. |
02:44 | It has 4 arrow buttons. |
02:48 | This tool is used for navigation on the globe. |
02:53 | I will click on the up and down arrow buttons of the windrose. |
02:59 | Observe that earth rotates on its axis back and forth. |
03:06 | Next I will click on the left and right arrow buttons of the windrose. |
03:12 | On clicking these arrow buttons, the earth spins around its physical axis. |
03:19 | The arrow keys on the keyboard allow us to change the directions on the globe. |
03:25 | As I press the arrow keys, notice the changes in direction of the globe. |
03:32 | Below the windrose we have a Home button. |
03:36 | This button resets the globe to its original position. |
03:41 | Next we have a vertical Zoom slider. |
03:45 | On the slider, plus(+) button is for zoom in and minus (-) is for zoom out. |
03:53 | Click on plus(+) or minus (-) buttons or drag the slider to zoom the globe as required. |
04:03 | We can also scroll the mouse wheel to zoom in or zoom out. |
04:09 | Notice the changes on the size of map, as I scroll the mouse wheel. |
04:15 | Let us drag the zoom slider to see the map of India clearly. |
04:21 | I will zoom out to get the previous location on the map. |
04:26 | At the bottom of the window we see a Status bar. |
04:31 | The Status bar shows Position, Altitude, date and time of a particular location. |
04:39 | Next we will look at the menu bar of Marble. |
04:43 | Menu bar has standard menu items like,
File, Edit, View, Bookmarks, Settings and Help. |
04:55 | Notice that short-cut keys are available for some of the sub-menus. |
05:01 | For example, short-cut key to open a file is Ctrl O. |
05:07 | Short-cut key to Download Maps is Ctrl N. |
05:12 | These short-cut keys are called Command tabs. |
05:17 | Below the menu bar, we can see a toolbar. |
05:21 | It has Open, Print and Copy map icons. |
05:28 | Now I will demonstrate how to set a default home location. |
05:33 | I am taking India, as my default home location. |
05:39 | To set the Home location, go to Bookmarks menu and select Set Home Location. |
05:47 | We can also use the Home button on the keyboard to set the Home location. |
05:53 | Now we will set a bookmark for Mumbai on the map. |
05:58 | Locate the position of Mumbai on the map. |
06:03 | Go to Bookmarks menu and select Add Bookmark option. |
06:09 | Edit Bookmark- Marble dialog box appears on the screen. |
06:15 | In the Description field, type the name as Mumbai, India.
Click on OK button. |
06:23 | A bookmark for the location of Mumbai has been saved with latitude and longitude. |
06:30 | I will zoom out to get the previous location on the map. |
06:35 | Let us check whether our Home location is set properly or not. |
06:40 | So, I will close the Marble application by clicking on cross button. |
06:46 | Now I will reopen Marble application using the Dash Home. |
06:55 | Notice that, the interface has opened with the same view as we closed earlier. |
07:02 | Below the toolbar, we can see 5 Panels.
Search , Routing, Location, Map view, and Legend. |
07:14 | We will learn more about these panels in the upcoming tutorials |

07:22 | Locate Delhi and Chennai on the India map. |
07:27 | Bookmark these positions on the virtual globe.
