* Open a terminal.

Download and install on Windows 10 OS |
Let’s download and install ELAN on Windows 10 OS. |
Hover mouse over, .exe and zip. | The .exe file, will download an executable file.
The zip file will download the compiled program. |
Click on the .zip link for Windows OS. | Click on the compiled zip folder to download it. |
Show the downloading file message. | The download may start automatically in some systems. |
Show screenshot of save file dialogue box. | If a dialog box opens, choose to save the file option and click on Ok. |
Show the completed file download icon. | Allow the file download to complete. |
Open the file manager. | Open the File manager. |
Go to the Downloads folder. | Go to the Downloads folder.
The file is downloaded into this folder for me. |
Double click on the ELAN-win.zip file.
Choose Extract all. |
Right click on the compressed zipped ELAN file as seen here.
Click on Extract all. |
Cursor on the dialogue box.
Click on Extract. |
A dialogue box opens.
I will retain the default setting and click on Extract as seen. |
Cursor on the progress bar. | Extraction takes a minute or so and we can see the progress. |
Cursor on the ELAN-6-0 folder. | Notice the extracted ELAN folder. |
Go to the ELAN-6-0 folder. | Go to the newly created ELAN folder. |
Again Go to the ELAN-6-0 folder.
(Add annotation: Some users will not need this second step of entering the folder). |
Again, enter the ELAN directory as seen here. |
Scroll down.

Double click on the ELAN application file. | The program is already compiled for you.
Double click on the ELAN application file, to open the interface. |

Download and install on Ubuntu Linux 18.04 OS |
Next, Let’s download and install ELAN on Ubuntu Linux 18.04 OS. |
On the Linux OS section, Click on .tar.gz on the right side of ELAN 6.0 | In the Linux section for 6.0 version, click on the .deb link. |
Point to the dialog box. | A save file dialog box opens. |
Choose the Save File option and click on OK. | Choose the Save File option and click on OK to download the file. |
Show download completed icon. | Allow the download to complete. |
Open the file manager and go to Downloads folder. | Open the File manager and go to Downloads folder. |
Cursor on ELAN_6-0_linux.deb file. | Notice the downloaded ELAN deb file in the Downloads folder. |
Press Ctrl+Alt+T .
Cursor on the Terminal. |
Open a terminal by pressing Control, Alt and T keys together.
A terminal window opens. |
Type cd Downloads and press Enter. | Change the directory to the Downloads folder. |
Type sudo dpkg -i ELAN_6-0_linux.deb and press Enter. | Type the command as seen here to install the deb file.
Enter the sudo password when prompted. |
Point to the files of installation. | Allow the installation to complete.
In case of error messages, contact your system administrator. |
Press the Windows key on the keyboard. | To open the software interface, first, press the Windows key on the keyboard. |
Type Elan in the search form. | Type Elan in the search form, and notice the installed software is listed. |
Select the Elan icon, press Enter or double click to open the program. | Select the Elan icon, press Enter or double click to open the program. |
Show ELAN interface. | The ELAN interface opens with a grey window and menus on top. |
Click on Edit and then Preferences, Edit Preferences. | Click on Edit and then Preferences.
Choose Edit Preferences from the sub menu. |
Choose Platform/OS option from the left panel. | The Edit Preferences window opens.
Choose the Platform or OS option from the left panel. |
For Media Framework, choose JavaFX Media Framework option. | For Media Framework, choose JavaFX Media Framework option.
Do this before creating or loading projects. |
Click on Apply. | Click on Apply to accept the changes. |
Click on File, New. | Click on File, New to start a new project.
A dialogue box opens. |
Navigate to Videos directory. | Change the path to Videos directory.
I have saved the input file here, which is provided in the Codefiles link. |
Choose ELAN.mp4 file. | Choose the file ELAN.mp4 . |
Click on the file format drop-down. | Click on the file format drop-down.
Notice the various media file formats that ELAN can read. |
Click on the right shift(>>) operator. | Click on the right shift operator. |
Cursor on the right frame. | This adds the file on the right frame and to the project. |
Click on OK. | Click on OK to accept and initialize the new project. |
Cursor on the video. | The video window is seen on the top left side. |
Cursor on the right panel. | On the right side, notice the various tabs.
By default, Controls tab is selected. |
Place the cursor on the scroll bar in the middle. | Place the cursor on the scroll bar in the middle. |
Left click hold and drag it. | Lets click hold and drag it.
Notice the frames of the video, in the video window. |
Click on the play button. | Click on the play button, to play the video. |
Click on the play button. | Click on it again to pause the video.
Add the video file to sequencer panel. Short cut key to play or pause is to press Control and Spacebar keys together. |
Click on Options and show the layout modes.
Point to the Annotation Mode radio button. |
Click on Options tab to show the layout modes.
This is the Annotation Mode layout in the software. There are modes such as Transcription or Segmentation Modes as seen here. |
Click on File, Save ELAN File. | Click on File, Save to save the project.
A Save as dialog box opens. |
Cursor on eaf extension.
Choose Videos folder and type file name, first-ELAN.eaf. |
The project extension is .eaf here.
I will choose the Videos folder and name the file, first-ELAN.eaf. |
Click on Save. | Click on Save to save the project. |
Click on File, Quit. | Click on File, exit to quit ELAN. |
