Show opened Blender interface. | I have already opened the Blender interface. |
Click on File, Open. | Click on File, Open to open the saved blender project. |
From the Videos folder, choose the annotate.blend project file. | From the Videos folder, choose the annotate.blend file.
I have saved the input file in the Videos folder. |
Click on Open. | Click on Open to open the project. |
Cursor next to the audio track. | The project has audio and video tracks. |
Let’s make a text annotation, for the title clip and add a background color. | |
Click on Add, text. | Click on Add, and select text in the Sequencer panel.
A text effect layer or strip is added in the Channel above the video channel. |
Click to select the text clip. | Select the text strip. |
Cursor on the Strip tab. | Notice the Strip tab on the Side bar on the right side.
Several parameters can be adjusted from here. |
Cursor text to the text field. | Notice that, text is written on the top.
This indicates that this is a text effect strip. |
Cursor on the checked box. | To mute or hide the strip, uncheck the textbox on the right. |
Type, my first title clip on the effect strip field. | Let’s type, my first title clip on the Effect Strip field below.
This is the text that will be displayed. |
Cursor on the folder icon to show the tool tip – Load a new font from a file. | From the styles section, we can select from downloaded font styles.
I will leave it as is now. |

Place the cursor on the field for size. | Place the cursor on the field for Size to show a two direction arrow.
Click, hold and move left or right to increase or decrease the font size. |
Cursor on the new text size value. | I will choose a value of around 90 for text size. |
Cursor next to the Color field. | Now, let’s select the text color.
Currently, it is white for me. |
Click on the field for Color. | Click on the field for Color to open the Color selection option. |
Click on the RGB tab. Move the color scale bar on the right.
Select blue color. |
Click on the RGB tab to show the color wheel.
To show the colors, move the color scale bar on the right,upwards. I will select a blue color. |
Cursor on Shadow option. | Notice the Shadow option below the color setting.
You may check the box, to show the shadow on the font. |
Check the box for Shadow and click on the field for shadow. | Pause the video and do the following.
Click on the field for Shadow, to open the color options. |
Show the RGB tab. | Choose a color of your choice from the RGB tab. |
Scroll down to Location filed. | Next, scroll down and adjust the X and Y placement of the text. |
Place the cursor on the location X field.
Click, hold and move the x location to move the text. |
Place the cursor on the value of X field.
Click, hold and move to left or right to place the text in the desired location. |
Place the cursor on the field for Y location. | Next, place the cursor in the value field for Y location.
Notice the two direction arrow. |
Again, click, hold and move to place the text t adjust Y position. | Again, click, hold and move to place the text as seen here. |
Cursor next to alignment and wrap options. | Notice the alignment and wrap options.
Learner may pause this video and explore more if desired. |
Scroll down to the Time tab. | Scroll down further on the Strip tab to the Time section. |
Cursor next to Channel. | Here, notice the channel number of the strip. |
Cursor next to start and duration option. | We can also adjust the duration and position of the text effect strip. |
Cursor on the text over the video. | Now, the text strip is on the video. |
In the duration field and make the duration to 10 seconds. | Let’s use the duration field and make the duration to 5 seconds. |
The input video is 25 fps.
On the duration field, notice 25. | |
Cursor on the Duration field number. | It is the default length that is added for 1 second with 25 frames. |
Cursor on interface and add annotation. | We need 125 frames to make the duration to 5 seconds.
I will change 25 to 125 and press Enter to increase the duration to 5 seconds. |
Click and drag in the end to adjust the clip duration. | You ,may also, drag on the handles to adjust the duration. |
Move the strip to the beginning of the video using the mouse. | Let’s reposition the text strip in the Sequencer panel.

Place the text layer, before the start of the video. | Place the text layer, before the start of the video as seen here. |
Cursor on the zero position and the preview panel. | Notice that, our preview range starts at zero frame position.
Now the text strip is out of the visible preview range. |
Press the A key. | Let’s move all the strips together to start at zero time in the Sequencer panel.
First click on any one of the strips. Then press the A key to select all the clips. |
Next press the G key. | Next press the G key.
Without clicking, move the mouse to the right. |
Reposition to start the text strip at time zero. | Reposition to start the text strip at time zero.
Now, all strips are in the visible preview range. |
Cursor in the Time section. | Now, the options in the Time section can also be used to adjust position. |
Place the playhead anywhere on the video strip. | We will add background color frames for the text annotation.
Place the playhead in any frame on the video strip. |
Click on Add, color. | Let’s add a color strip by clicking on Add, then color. |
Select the color effect strip. | Notice a new effect strip gets added in a channel in the Sequencer panel.
Let’s select it. |
Cursor on channel 1 and 2. | If the color strip gets added in channel 1 or 2, please move it to Channel 4. |
Move the color strip from channel 3 to 4. | For me, the color strip is on channel 3 and I will move it from channel 3 to 4. |
Go to Time section in the Strip tab. | Let’s adjust position and duration of the color strip.
Go to Time section in the Strip tab. |
Enter zero in the Start field and 125 in the Duration field. | Enter zero in the Start field and 125 in the Duration field. |
Cursor in the Sequencer panel. | This changes the color strip duration to 5 seconds starting at zero time. |
Cursor next to the End field. | We don’t have to enter the End position.
Since the duration and start time is mentioned. |
Cursor in the Sequencer panel. | This positions the Color layer, above the text, for the same duration. |
Place the playhead anywhere on the Color layer. | Place the playhead anywhere on the Color layer. |
Go to the Color tab in Side bar. | Go to the Color tab in the Side bar. |
Click on the rectangle next to Color.Move the color scale bar slider upwards. | Click on the rectangle next to Color, to choose the desired color. |

Select a green shade. | I will select a green shade.
This change is also visible in the Preview panel. |
Cursor on the Preview panel. | Notice that, the text is not visible now.
Text can be made visible 2 ways. |
In the color tab, change the Blend mode to Alpha Under. | In the color section, change the Blend mode to Alpha Under. |
Press Control-Z. | Notice that, the text is visible now.
Press Control-Z to undo the change. |
Scroll down the strip tab to show the channel number. | Now, again the text is not visible.
Scroll down the Strip tab to see the Channel number. |
Cursor on the channel number. | The color layer or strip is in the 4th channel.
It is in the channel above the text strip. |
Move the channel to the 2nd channel. | I will move the text strip to the 5th channel, using the field as seen here. |
Cursor next to text in the Preview panel. | Now the third channel is empty and the text is visible again. |
Cursor on the Sequencer panel. | Learner may pause this video and explore the many options further. |
Show File Press Ctrl+S.
Then Press Ctrl+Q. |
You may save the project, render to an output file and quit Blender. |
