Slide Number 1
Title Slide |
Welcome to this tutorial on Creating a Material Stream in DWSIM. |
Slide Number 2
Learning Objective |
In this tutorial, we will learn to:
|
Slide Number 3
System Requirements |
This tutorial is recorded using
But, this process is identical in Linux, Mac OS X or FOSSEE OS on ARM. |
Slide Number 4
Pre-requisites |
You should have DWSIM installed on your machine. |
Let us start by creating a new steady state simulation.
Cursor to Desktop
DWSIM >> Run as Administrator. |
To open DWSIM, go to the Desktop.
Right-click on DWSIM and click Run as Administrator. |
DWSIM window opens. | DWSIM window opens. |
Close the Tasks window. | Close the Tasks window. |
File >> New Steady-state Simulation | Go to File menu and select New Steady-state Simulation. |
Cursor to Simulation Configuration Wizard window | Simulation Configuration Wizard window opens. |
Click on Next button at the bottom. | Click on the Next button at the bottom of the window. |
First, we will add the compounds.
Type Benzene in the search tab | In the Compounds Search tab, type Benzene. |
ChemSep Database >> Benzene | Select Benzene from ChemSep database. |
Point to Benzene compound
Check the checkbox under column Added |
Under Added column, check the checkbox for Benzene.
We can also double-click anywhere on this line. |
Type Toluene in the search tab | Similarly, add Toluene from ChemSep database. |
Click on Next button at the bottom. | Then click on Next button at the bottom to continue. |
Point to Property Packages | The Property Packages window opens. |
Cursor on Property Packages window. | As Benzene and Toluene form an ideal solution, we can choose Raoult's law. |
Property Packages >> Available Property Package
Double click on Raoult’s Law |
From Available Property Packages list, double-click on Raoult’s Law. |
Click on Next button. | Now click on the Next button at the bottom. |
Point to System of Units | Next option is System of Units. |
System of Units >> CGS | Under System of Units, we will select CGS. |
Click on the Finish button. | Then click on the Finish button at the bottom. |
Click on Maximize button. | Let us maximize the Simulation window. |
Hover the mouse at the centre | The canvas at the centre is used to create the flowsheets.
We will now create a material stream. |
Hover the mouse at Object Palette | At the bottom of the main simulation window, we can see an Object Palette.
It has a large collection of many useful chemical engineering objects. |
Click and drag material stream to flowsheet | Go to Streams tab.
From the displayed list, drag and drop a material stream to the flowsheet. |
Cursor at the stream. | Let us arrange the stream. |
Click on MSTR-000.
Pop up appears. |
Click on the material stream named as MSTR-000.
DWSIM has given the name MSTR-000 to this stream automatically. Let me change it. |
Hover the mouse to Property Editor Window | On the left hand side of the flowsheet we can see the Property Editor Window. |
Type Object as Inlet1. | Under General Info, type the Object as Inlet1.
Press Enter. |
Point to the Material Stream | We can see the name Inlet1 appearing below this stream in the flowsheet. |
Cursor on the interface. | Now let us specify the feed stream compositions. |
Input Data >> Compound Amounts | Under Input Data, click on Compound Amounts tab. |
Compound Amounts >> Basis >> Mole Fractions | Choose the Basis as Mole Fractions, if not already selected.
By default, Mole Fractions is selected as Basis. |
Benzene: 0.4 | Now for Benzene, enter the Amount as 0.4 and press Enter. |
Toluene: 0.6 | For Toluene, enter 0.6 and press Enter. |
Click Accept Changes | On the right, click on Accept Changes button. |
Hover the mouse at Total | The total of the mole fractions appears on the right hand side.
If the total is not 1, DWSIM normalises the entries, so that the total becomes 1. |
Cursor on the interface. | Now we will specify the Feed stream properties. |
Point to Input Data
Cursor to the default values |
The Input Data tab shows all the properties of the stream.
DWSIM assigns default values to all properties. |
Click on Input Data. | Go to Input Data. |
Stream Conditions >> Flash Spec >> Temperature and Pressure (TP) | Under Stream Conditions tab, select Flash Spec as Temperature and Pressure (TP) if not already selected.
By default, Temperature and Pressure should already be selected as Flash Spec. |
Input Data >> Temperature >> 30 C
Press Enter |
Change Temperature to 30 deg C and press Enter. |
Input Data >> Pressure >> 1 atm
Press Enter |
Change Pressure to 1 atm and press Enter. |
Input Data >> Molar Flow >> 100 mol/s
Press Enter |
Change Molar Flow to 100 mol/s and press Enter. |
Click on File and Click Save As | Let us now save this file using the Save As option. |
Type stream | I will save it as stream. |
Close the Property Editor Window. | Close the Property Editor Window. |
Click on the Material Stream | We can always get back to the previous pop-up by double-clicking on the stream. |
We will build on this material stream in the upcoming tutorials.
Let me go back to the slides.
Let's summarize. | |
Slide Number 5
Summary |
In this tutorial, we have learnt to
|
Here are some assignments for you.
Assignment 1 Slide | Choose Benzene and Toluene mole fractions that do not add up to 1.
Check how DWSIM normalises when you press Accept Changes button. |
Assignment 2 Slide | Go to the page where you defined mole fractions.
Check what the Normalize button does when the Total is not 1. |
Assignment 3 Slide | Go to the page where we defined the molar flow rate.
DWSIM automatically displays equivalent flow rates in other units. Check if these values are consistent. |
Assignment 4 Slide | Create a stream consisting of Benzene, Toluene and Xylene.
Carry out the previous assignments for this stream also. |
This brings us to the end of this tutorial.
