00:01 Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on Uploading and Editing Resources in Moodle.
00:08 In this tutorial, we will learn about:

URL resource , Book resource and Editing resources in Moodle

00:19 This tutorial is recorded using: Ubuntu Linux OS 16.04
00:25 Apache, MariaDB and PHP obtained through XAMPP 5.6.30
00:33 Moodle 3.3 and Firefox web browser

You may use any web browser of your choice.

00:43 However, Internet Explorer should be avoided, as it causes some display inconsistencies.
00:51 This tutorial assumes that your site administrator has set up a Moodle website

and registered you as a teacher.

01:01 Learners of this tutorial should have a teacher login on Moodle

at least one course assigned to them by the administrator

01:11 And some course material uploaded for their respective course
01:16 If not, please refer to the relevant Moodle tutorials on this website.
01:22 To practise this tutorial, you will need to add a student to your course.
01:28 To know how to add a student, please refer to the tutorial Users in Moodle.
01:35 I have already added a student, Priya Sinha, to my course.
01:41 Switch to the browser and login to your moodle site as a teacher.
01:48 Click on the Calculus course in the left navigation menu.
01:53 We had added a page resource and a folder resource earlier in the series.
02:00 We will now add some additional course material.

Click on the gear icon at the top right and then click on Turn Editing On.

02:11 Click on Add an activity or resource link at the bottom right of the Basic Calculus section.
02:19 A pop-up opens with a list of resources.

It is called activity chooser.

02:26 Scroll down and select URL from the list.

Detailed description about the resource is seen on the right side.

02:37 With a URL resource, one can add links to online resources.
02:43 These could be documents, online videos, wiki pages, open educational resources, etc.
02:52 Click on the Add button at the bottom of the activity chooser.
02:57 In the Name field, I will type Evolutes of basic curves.
03:03 Then in the External URL textbox, type the URL mentioned here.
03:10 Description text area is an optional field.

I will type the text as shown here.

03:17 Click on Display description on course page checkbox below this text area.
03:24 Now click on Appearance to expand the section.
03:29 The Display option here, is to decide how the video will be displayed.
03:35 There are 4 options in the dropdown.

Automatic option selects the best option based on browser settings and screen resolution.

03:45 Embed opens the video inside the course itself.

Open redirects the user to the URL within the same window.

03:55 In pop-up opens the video in a new pop-up window.
04:00 When you select In pop-up, the Pop-up width and Pop-up height options, get enabled.

You can modify the values as per your preference.

04:12 I will select Embed as the Display option.
04:17 Scroll down to Activity completion section and click on it to expand it.
04:24 This section helps the teacher decide if she wants to track the completion of an activity.
04:32 There are 3 options under Completion tracking.

Depending on the resource, you can decide the tracking mechanism.

04:41 Let me select the 3rd option here. And click on Student must view this activity to complete it checkbox.
04:51 Scroll down and click on Save and return to course button, at the bottom.
04:58 A checkmark next to the activity name, indicates when the activity is complete.
05:05 Let us now create a book resource. As the name suggests it will have multiple pages, chapters and subchapters
05:16 It can have multimedia content as well
05:20 Go back to the browser window now.
05:23 Click on Add an activity or resource link at the bottom right of the Basic Calculus section.
05:30 Scroll down and select Book from the list of Resources.
05:34 Click on Add button at the bottom of the activity chooser.
05:39 In the Name field, type Iterating evolutes and involutes
05:45 Type the description as shown here.
05:48 Click on Appearance to expand the section.
05:51 The first option is Chapter formatting.

This decides how we see the chapters and subchapters.

05:59 The options are self-explanatory. You can click on the Help icon before the dropdown to read the explanations.
06:08 I will let it be Numbers.
06:11 The next option is Style of navigation. This decides how we show the previous and next links.
06:19 TOC is the Table of Contents.
06:23 If we select Images, previous and next will be shown as arrows.
06:29 Text will show previous and next chapters in the navigation.
06:34 We also have the option of providing a custom title to every chapter navigation.
06:40 This will then override the chapter name being shown as text.
06:45 I will select Text as the Style of navigation.
06:49 Next, click on Restrict Access section to expand it.

This helps us decide who has access to this resource.

06:59 By default, there is no restriction. It means anyone who is enrolled in this course, will be able to see this book.
07:08 Let me click on the Add restriction button.
07:12 There are some options here. You can read the explanation of each one and decide which restriction to select.
07:21 We’ll put an activity completion condition for the URL resource we created earlier.
07:27 Let us restrict access to this book till a student marks that as complete.
07:33 Click on Activity completion. Depending on the option we choose for restriction, the fields here will be different.
07:42 Choose Evolutes of basic curve in the Activity completion dropdown.

Then select Must be marked complete as the condition.

07:54 Scroll down and click on Save and display button at the bottom of the page.
08:00 We can now add chapters and subchapters to this book.
08:05 Type the Chapter title as Introduction.
08:09 Type the Content as Introduction to evolutes and involutes.

You can copy and paste your lecture note, if any.

08:19 Click on Save changes button at the bottom of the page.
08:24 You can now see this chapter in the middle of the page.

And there is a table of contents on the right side.

08:32 Clicking on Exit Book link, will take us back to the Calculus course.
08:38 Notice there are 4 icons on the right in the Table of Contents block, below the Introduction chapter.
08:46 Edit, Delete, Hide and Add new chapter.
08:55 Let me add a subchapter now. Click on the plus icon indicating Add new chapter.

Subchapters are created just like chapters.

09:07 They have an extra checkbox to indicate that they are subchapters.

Click on this checkbox.

09:15 Type Chapter title as Classical evolutes and involutes.

Copy and paste the content as shown here.

09:24 You will find the content for this Book-IteratingEvolutesAndInvolutes.odt in the Code files of this tutorial.
09:31 Click on Save changes button at the bottom of the page.
09:37 You can now see the subchapter. Also notice the navigation for the previous chapter.
09:44 Notice that there is an extra icon next to the icons on the right.
09:49 The up and down arrows are to reorder the chapters.
09:54 Let us see what happens when we move this subchapter up.

Click on the Up arrow.

10:01 Notice that Introduction now becomes the 2nd chapter instead of a subchapter.
10:08 Move it back as first chapter again.
10:11 How do we make Classical evolutes and involutes as a subchapter again?

Click on the gear icon below the title to edit it.

10:21 Now click on the Subchapter checkbox to make it a subchapter.
10:26 Scroll down and click on Save changes button.
10:30 Let us go back to the Calculus course again.
10:34 We now have the below resources for the topic Basic Calculus
10:40 We can reorder these resources by dragging them.
10:45 Let me drag Evolutes of Basic curves URL resource, above the other two.
10:52 There is an Edit link to the right of every resource. Click on it.
10:58 There are settings to edit, hide, duplicate and delete the resource.

These are self-explanatory.

11:09 There are 2 other options: Move right and Assign roles.
11:14 Click on Move right.

This will give a little indentation to the resource.

11:21 This is helpful for visual representation of a resource which is a part of another resource.
11:28 I will click on Move left to bring this resource back to its original position.
11:34 We can now logout of Moodle.
11:38 Let me login as student Priya Sinha now.
11:41 This is how student Priya Sinha will view this page.
11:46 Notice that the completion boxes are not ticked the first time.
11:51 She will need to view this URL to mark this resource as complete.
11:56 And the book resource is not clickable till the URL resource is marked complete.
12:02 Let me click on Evolutes of basic curves resource.
12:07 Now click on Calculus link in the breadcrumb.

The resource is now marked complete and the book is available to the student.
