Welcome the tutorial on View, Print and Export structures in GChemPaint.

Here I am using

Ubuntu Linux OS version. 12.04

GChemPaint version 0.12.10

Pre-requisites

To follow this tutorial you should be familiar with,

GChemPaint chemical structure editor.

If not, for relevant tutorials, please visit our website.

Switch to GChempaint Application

Dash home >>In the Search bar that appears>> type GChempaint>> Click on the GChempaint icon.

To open a new GChemPaint application, click on Dash home.

In the Search bar that appears, type GChemPaint.

And then click on the GChemPaint icon.

Let's first open an existing file.

Click on Open a file icon from toolbar Click on Open a file icon from the toolbar.

A window with files and folders opens.

select “petane-ethane” >>

click on Open button.

Select the file named “petane-ethane” from the list.

And click on the Open button.

Now let's first learn about View options.

Go to View menu>> View menu>> options Full Screen and Zoom Go to View menu.

In the View menu, we have two options Full Screen and Zoom.

Select Zoom >> context menu opens.

Let's select Zoom option. A submenu opens with a list of zoom factors.

Scroll down the list >>select Zoom to % Scroll down the list and select Zoom to %.
Dialog box with zoom factor opens A dialog box with zoom factor (%) opens.
Point to the Zoom factor value. The default zoom factor(%) value is displayed.
Here we can increase or decrease the Zoom factor as required
Click up arrow triangle>>hold left mouse button Click on the up or down arrow triangle and observe the zooming.
Click on Apply button>> OK button. Click on Apply and then on OK.

The structure appears with the applied zoom factor.

Next let's see how to setup a page.

Go to File menu >>navigate to Page Setup >> click on it>>

Page Setup window opens.

Go to File menu, navigate to Page Setup and click on it.
The Page Setup window opens.
Points to tabs This window contains two tabs - Page and Scale.

Point to Paper, Center on Page Orientation. Page tab contains fields like Paper, Center on Page and Orientation. Point to Paper field US Letter. In the Paper field, we can set the default paper size. Click on Change Paper Type >>Page Setup dialog box opens. Let's click on the Change Paper Type button. The Page Setup dialog box opens. Point to Format for, Paper size and orientation. There are 3 options here - Format for, Paper size and Orientation. In Format for field>> select your default printer. Select your default printer in the Format for field. I will select my default printer. Point to the list Paper size field has a drop down list with different paper sizes. Point to A4 Point to inches (8.27x11.69 inches) Let's select A4.

Below this field the dimensions of A4 size are displayed. Click on A5 and then back on A4 Note that paper size dimensions are displayed for every selected paper size. Point to the radio buttons In the orientation field we have 4 radio buttons - Portrait, Landscape, Reverse portrait and Reverse landscape.

By default Portrait is selected. Let's leave as it is and click on Apply button. Point to different margins Next, we have margin sizes. Top margin, Left margin, Right margin and Bottom margin. Point to margins We can adjust the margins as required here.

Next field is Unit. Point to inches, millimetres and points. Unit field can be set in inches, millimetres and points. Click on Points Note that when we change the Unit, margin sizes automatically change to suit the Unit.

Let's learn about Center on page. Point to check boxes.

click on Horizontally Here we have two check boxes Horizontally and Vertically. Let's click on Horizontally check box. Click on the Preview button We can see the preview of our structure by clicking on the Preview button. Point to radio buttons Portrait, Landscape, Reverse portrait, Reverse landscape. In the orientation field we have radio buttons for Portrait, Landscape, Reverse portrait, Reverse landscape Point to Portrait option >> close the preview window By default, Portrait option is selected.

Let's close the preview window. click on Landscape radio button>>click on the Preview button Now, let's click on Landscape radio button and then click on the Preview button. Slide Number Assignment You can explore the other Orientation options on your own. Point to the print button If you click on the Print button, the file will be printed with the changes made. Point to Scale tab. You can also scale your structure as required before printing. Click on the Scale tab. For this you can use the various options in the Scale tab. Explore Scale tab on your own. Click on Close button >>close the Page Setup window. Let's click on Close button to close the Page Setup window.

Next, let's learn how to export an image. Go to File menu, select “Save as image”. Go to File menu, select “Save as image”.

Point to dialog box. “Save as image” dialog box opens. Point to File Type

Point to formats File Type field has a list of image options.

You can export the image as SVG, PDF, JPEG, PNG and a few other formats.

Let's select SVG image. Type file name as “Propane” >> click on Save button.

Enter file name as “Pentane-ethane” and click on Save button.

Show the image. Here we can see that file is saved as SVG image.

Next let's export the image as PDF document. Go to File menu, select “Save as image”. Go to File menu, select “Save as image”.

Point to dialog box. “Save as image” dialog box opens. From File Type field>> select PDF document From File Type field, select PDF document. Type file name as “Pentane” >> click on Save button. Enter the file name as “Pentane” and click on Save button.

Show the image. Here we can see that file is saved as a PDF document.

As an assignment Print the structures in A5, B5 and JB5 formats.
