To record this tutorial, I am using
  • Ubuntu Linux OS 16.04
  • Koha version 16.05

To follow this tutorial, you should have knowledge of Library Science.

Pre-requisites

To practice this tutorial,
  • You should have Koha installed on your system.
  • You should having working knowledge of Koha.
  • If not, please refer to the Koha Spoken Tutorial series on this website.
Show a screenshot of all 3 books in the library To begin with,

I have added 2 more books on Microbiology.

  • one with author as Powar and Daginawala
  • another with author as Heritage

This makes it a total of 3 books in my library.


Before going ahead,

  • Please add 2 more books of your choice into your library
  • as has been explained in an earlier tutorial.


Open Web Browser


Type http://127.0.1.1/8000


and Press Enter


Open your Web Browser and type

http://127.0.1.1/8000

This URL is based on-

  • The port number and domain name given at the time of installation
  • Please type as per what you had mentioned

Now, press Enter.

In the Search field, from the Library catalog, drop down, we can search by the following options:


  • Title
  • Author
  • Subject
  • ISBN
  • Series
  • Call number
Type Microbiology in the search field


Click on Go at the right side of the field

I will type Microbiology in the search field.


And click on Go at the right side of the field.

Cursor on Library items having the word Microbiology All the Library items having the word Microbiology, is listed in the results.
Click on the tab Relevance

Select Author (A-Z)


The listed items with the search word, can be further sorted as per the user’s choice.


To do so, go to the right side of the list and click on the tab Relevance.

From the drop-down, I will select Author (A-Z).

You may choose any other relevant option as per your requirement.

Cursor on Authors listed down in alphabetic order Upon selecting Author (A-Z), a list of Authors is displayed in alphabetic order.
Cursor on Availability Look below the title of the listed items.


Here, we can see the availability of that particular item across all the libraries.

Cursor on 'Refine Your Search' So how can we improve our search for even better results?


We can do so by clicking on the ‘Refine Your Search' tab on the extreme left.


Then go to the various tabs under sections like:* Availability

  • Authors
  • Item Types
  • Locations
  • Topics


Narration only Now, let us see what to do in case the required material is not found with a general search.

Click on the tab Advanced Search

On the Search Catalog page, click on the link Advanced Search.

A new page with the title Search for, opens up.


Using the multiple dropdown options, we can refine our search for our required material.

Cursor on
  • Keyword
  • Subject
  • Title
  • Author
  • Publisher
  • Publisher Location
  • ISBN
  • Barcode



From the first drop-down on the left side, select the appropriate option such as:


  • Keyword
  • Subject
  • Title
  • Author
  • Publisher
  • Publisher Location
  • ISBN
  • Barcode


Click on Subject I will select Subject.
Cursor on right side field And in the right side field, type the details of the option selected from the left side drop-down.
Type Microbiology as Subject I will type Microbiology here.
For Author type Patel. Using the second dropdown option, I will select Author as Patel.
For Publisher type Pearson. Using the third drop-down option, I will select Publisher as Pearson.

On the same page, notice the other options under the section Item Type-


  1. Books

Followed by options such as-
  • Publication date range
  • Language
  • Location and availability
  • Sorting


Cursor on Item Type


Click on the radio button for Books.

So, under the section Item Type, I will click on the radio button for Books.
Cursor on Publication date range I will leave the Publication date range as blank.
Cursor on Language:

Select English from the drop down

For Language, select English from the drop-down, if not already selected.
Cursor on Location and availability:

For Library: select Spoken Tutorial Library

Under the section Location and availability:,

for Library: I will select Spoken Tutorial Library.


You should select the name of your library here.

Cursor on Sorting:

For Sort by: select Author (A-Z)

Under the section Sorting:, for Sort by: I will select Author (A-Z).
Cursor on Only items currently available for loan or reference Next, I will leave the checkbox

Only items currently available for loan or reference,


as blank.

Click on Search After filling all details, click on Search at the bottom of the page.

  • Subject as Microbiology
  • Author as Patel, Arvind H.
  • Publisher as Pearson
  • Language as English
  • Library as Spoken Tutorial Library
A new page with updated results will open up.


This page will have a list of all items having the following:

  • Subject as Microbiology
  • Author as Patel, Arvind H.
  • Publisher as Pearson
  • Language as English
  • Library as Spoken Tutorial Library
Click on More Options


Cursor on Advanced search

Now, let’s go back to the Advanced Search page and click on More Options button.


On doing so, the layout of the Advanced search page changes.

Select Subject

Type Microbiology

Once again, in the first drop-down, I will select Subject.


Then I will type Microbiology.

Click on “and” Now come to the second row of options.


In the first drop-down, I will select the option “and”.

Click on “Author” And in the drop-down to the right, I will select “Author”.
Type“Powar”. Then to the right of this, I will type “Powar”.

Select the option “or”

Next, come to the third row of options.


In the first drop-down, I will select the option “or”.

Select “Author”

And in the drop-down to the right, I will select “Author”.
Type“Heritage”. Then to the right of this, I will type“Heritage”.
Click on Search at the bottom of the page. After filling in all the details, click on the Search button.

Sort by

If required, you can further expand the search using the search options under -
  • the section Item type


  • or the rest of the options.

This is how we can search for items in the library using OPAC.
