Pre-requisites |
To follow this tutorial you should be familiar with,
GChemPaint chemical structure editor. If not, for relevant tutorials, please visit our website. | ||
Switch to GChemPaint application
Dash home >>In the Search bar type GChemPaint Click on the GChemPaint icon. |
To open a new GChemPaint application.
Click on Dash home. In the Search bar that appears, type GChemPaint. Click on the GChemPaint icon. | ||
Let's begin the tutorial by opening an existing file. | |||
Click on File >>Open | Click on File menu, select Open and click on it. | ||
A window containing files and folders opens. | |||
Select the file named “propane” | From here, Select the file named “propane” | ||
Click on Open button. | Click on Open, to open the file. | ||
Let's add some text below the propane structure. | |||
Select “Add or modify a text”
Point to the Property page opens. |
Select “Add or modify a text” tool from tool box.
The text tool's Property page opens. | ||
Point to the fields | The Property page contains fields like - Family, Style, Size, Underline, and others. | ||
Point to Family >> scroll list | Family field has a list of font names.
Let's scroll down the list. | ||
Select Arial Black | I will select Arial Black from the Family. | ||
Click on the Display area | Click on the Display area below Propane structure.
You can see a blinking cursor enclosed in a green box. | ||
Type ”Propane” | Let's type the name of the compound as “Propane”. | ||
Change Style to Bold Italic. | Let's now change the Style to Bold Italic.
Select the text “Propane” click on Bold Italic. | ||
Increase fontsize to 16 | I will increase the fontsize to 16.
Let's scroll down and click on 16. | ||
Observe the changes in the text. | |||
Point to Underline field.
Show the drop down list >> select Single |
Next, let's use the Underline feature.
It has a drop down list with options-- None, Single, Double and Low. Let's select Single. | ||
Point to text. | Let's change the color of the text.
Default color of the text is “black” | ||
Point to the color field.
Click on drop down arrow. Select color to “purple” |
Click on the drop down arrow of the color field.
You can see different colors here. I will select “purple”. <Pause the narration> | ||
Text position range>> -100 to 100 | We can also change the position of the text.
Position field has range from -100 to 100 | ||
Select text>>click on up arrow >>Text moves up from Position “0” to “100” | Let's see how the position of the text changes.
Select text and click on the up arrow triangle with the mouse. Text moves upwards. | ||
Select text>> click on down arrow>>Text moves down from Position “0” to “-100” | Likewise if we click on down arrow triangle, text moves downwards.

Bring text to normal postion
Type "0" in the postion field >> click on the display area |
Let's bring the text to normal position.
Type 0 in the postion field and click on the Display area | ||

Let's now learn to select and move objects. | |||
From the Tool box, click on >>Select one or more objects | From the “Tool box” click on the tool “Select one or more objects”. | ||
Click on pentane | Click on “pentane” | ||
Press the left mouse button>> drag it to a different position >> release the mouse button. | Without releasing the mouse button, drag it to a different position.
Now, release the mouse button. | ||
Next let's learn to rotate an object. | |||
To rotate objects,>>click on “Select one or more objects” tool. | To rotate the objects, click on “Select one or more objects” tool. | ||

Flip the selection horizontally, Flip the selection vertically and Rotate the selection. |
The properties page has three tools
Flip the selection horizontally, Flip the selection vertically Rotate the selection. | ||
To use these tools. | |||
Click on pentane structure>> Select Rotate the selection>> move the mouse pointer | Click on the Pentane structure.
Select Rotate the selection option. Go to the Display area and place the mouse over the object. Move the mouse pointer in clock-wise or anti-clock-wise direction. Observe the rotation in the object.

Now, let's learn to flip objects. | |||
Flip the Pentane structure horizontally. | Let's flip the Pentane structure horizontally. | ||
Click on Flip the selection horizontally tool>>flip structure horizontally. | Click on Flip the selection horizontally tool to flip the structure horizontally | ||

Pause this tutorial and Flip the selection vertically on your own. | ||
Let's now group and align objects
To group the objects, select all the objects. | |||
Go to Edit menu >> click on Select all.
Press CTRL+A |
For this, go to Edit menu and click on Select All.
you can also press CTRL+A. keys simultaneously. | ||
Right click on any one of the objects | Right-click on any one of the objects. | ||
In the context menu >>select Group and/or align objects option | The context menu opens.
Select Group and/or align objects option. | ||
Point to the dialog box | A dialog box pops up. | ||
Click on the Group check-box | Click on the Group check-box. | ||
Uncheck the Align and Space evenly options. | Uncheck the Align and Space evenly options, if they are selected. | ||
Click on OK button | Click on OK button.
We see that all objects are grouped together. | ||
Press CTRL+A >> select objects | Let us now align the objects.
Press CTRL and A to select all objects. | ||
Right click on any one of the objects | Right-click on any one of the objects. | ||
In the context menu >>select Group and/or align objects option | The context menu opens.
Select Group properties | ||
Point to the dialog box | A dialog box pops up. | ||
Click on the Align check-box | Click on the Align check-box. | ||
Click on the drop-down list.
point to Normal, Top, Mid-height, Bottom, Left, Center and Right. |
Align option has a drop-down list.
It has some options to align the objects. | ||
Select “Center” >> click OK | Let's select “Left” and click OK.
Observe the changes. | ||

Let's learn how to use cut, copy and paste operations | |||
Go Edit menu >> Point to Cut, Copy, Paste and Clear. | Go to Edit menu.
It contains basic edit options like Cut, Copy, Paste and Clear. | ||
Point to options | The common short-cut keys for these options
CTRL+X to cut CTRL+C to copy CTRL+V to paste will work in GChemPaint as well. | ||
using “Select one or more objects” tool>> cut and paste objects>>at different places of diplay area | Select the object using “Select one or more objects” tool. click on the object
Let's press CTRL+X to cut it. Press CTRL+V to paste the object at a different position on the Display area. Observe that when we cut the object, it is deleted from its original place. | ||
Copy and paste objects>>at different places of diplay area | Next, let's copy and paste the object at a different place on the diplay area.
click on the object press CTRL+C to copy and CTRL+V to paste. Observe that when we copy the object, it is not deleted from its original place. | ||
Select all objects >>click on clear | To clear the Display area, select all objects.
press CTRL +A to select all objects. Go to Edit menu click on Clear. | ||
Go to Edit menu>>select Undo >>press CTRL+Z >> to undo | To get back our original structures, go to Edit menu and select Undo.
Or press CTRL+Z. | ||
Delete the object using Delete key from keyboard. | To delete object using the Delete Key on the Keyboard, Select the object.
Press Delete key. | ||

Let's now learn to use Eraser tool to delete part of the structure. | ||
Select Eraser tool>>move mouse near one structure. | Select Eraser tool from toolbox.
Place the mouse near any one of the objects. | ||
Delete red colored part of the structure. | Part of the structure turns red in color.
Click on the red colored part of the structure to delete it. | ||
Undo the changes | Let's now Undo the changes to get our original structures.
Press CTRL+Z. | ||
Click on Save the current file button on tool bar | Let's save the file now click on Save the current file button to save. | ||
