In this tutorial we will demonstrate Build an atom, interactive PhET simulation.

To follow this tutorial, viewers must be familiar with topics in high school science subjects.

System Requirement

To record this tutorial, I am using -
  • Ubuntu Linux Operating System version 14.04
  • Mozilla Firefox Web Browser 51.0.1
  • Java version 1.7.0


To view simulations, you may need to install Java version 1.5.0 or above.

Using this simulation, students will be able to:
  • Build an atom using protons, neutrons and electrons.
  • Identify an element and its position on the Periodic Table.

Composition of Atom

Various atomic theories proposed that each atom consists of -
  • a small, dense, positively charged nucleus
  • surrounded by much lighter, negatively charged electrons.

The nucleus may also contain neutrons, which have the same mass as proton but no charge.

Every element has different composition of protons, neutrons and electrons in its atom.


The number and arrangement of electrons defines the chemical behavior of an element.

I will now demonstrate Build an atom interactive simulation.


The simulation is given as a code file along with this tutorial.


To download Build an Atom interactive PhET simlation, use the link given here.

Open mozilla firefox Open Mozilla Firefox web browser.


And enter the address as show here in the address bar.

Click on Play with Simulations


Click on Chemistry from the menu on left side.

PhET simulations website opens.


Click on Play with Simulations button.


Select Chemistry from the menu on the left.

Click on Build an Atom simulation. All the available simulations in Chemistry are listed here.


Click on Build an Atom simulation.

Click on Download button.


In the dialog box, click on OK.

Build an Atom simulation opens.


Click on the simulation to open it for online use.


To download and save the simulation, click on Download button.


In the dialog box, click on Save file. Click on OK button.

Cursor on the downloads directory. The file will be saved in the Downloads directory.
Double-click on Build an Atom .html file. Navigate to the Downloads folder. Double-click on Build an Atom html file.

Open the PhET simulation.

Build an Atom simulation opens on the screen.

Let us now learn to build atoms using the interactive PhET simulation.

Point to the three screens. The Simulation has three screens;
  • Atom
  • Symbol and
  • Game
Click on Atom screen.


Click on Atom screen.


In the Atom screen, students can build atoms.


Determine the identity, net charge and mass of the atom.

Point to the three containers.

The atom screen shows drawing of Bohr's model of atom.


It shows position of nucleus with a cross mark and 2 orbits.


At the bottom of the screen, you can see containers with Protons, Neutrons and Electrons.

Point towards boxes naming Element, Net charge and Mass Number.


Click on the green plus sign located on each box.


On the right-side of the simulation window, there are also 3 panels-
  • Element, Net charge and Mass Number.


Click on the green plus sign located on each box.


This will allow you to view the changes as you change the number of particles.

Tick all the check boxes in Show box. Tick all the check boxes in the Show box at the bottom-right corner.
Point to top-left corner. The top left corner of the screen shows a box.


It shows number of protons, neutrons and electrons we have used to create the atom.

Let us start by building Hydrogen atom.


Hydrogen atom is the simplest of all elements.

It has one electron and one proton in the nucleus.

Click on the proton.

Drag and drop on the “X” mark.

From the Protons container, click on the proton.

Drag and drop on the “X” mark, which represents the nucleus of an atom.

Point to the boxes on the panel. Simultaneously observe the changes in each of the boxes on the panel.
Drag an electron and place in the 1st orbital or K-shell. Drag an electron and place in the 1st orbit.
Point to the boxes on the panel. Observe all the panels on the window.


Element box shows Hydrogen as element.

Net charge zero.

Mass number one.

Point to the boxes on the panel. It also shows the atom as stable and neutral atom.
Drag a proton and place it on the nucleus.


Drag an electron and place it on the 1st orbit.


Drag a neutron and place it on the nucleus.


Drag a neutron and place it on the nucleus.

Now add one more proton to the nucleus.


The atom is shown as unstable Helium ion.


Now add one more electron in the 1st orbit.


Now it is a neutral atom, but the atom is still labeled as unstable.


Add a neutron to the nucleus. The atom is now stable.


The mass number shows 3, but we know that atomic mass of Helium is 4.


Sso add another neutron to the nucleus.


This completes the atomic structure for the Helium atom.

Cursor on the panel. We can create atoms of different elements by adding or removing protons and neutrons from the nucleus.

Isotopes

Atoms of the same element that differ in neutrons are called isotopes.

Isotopes of same element have same chemical properties.

Drag and drop one proton, one electron and 2 neutrons from the helium atom. Back to the simulation window.

Let us create isotopes of Hydrogen.

Remove one proton, one electron and 2 neutrons from the Helium atom.

Now we have Hydrogen atom also called Protium.

Isotopes of Hydrogen

Hydrogen is known to exist in 3 isotopic forms.

Protium, Deuterium and Tritium.

Nucleus of Protium contains only one proton.

Deuterium has one proton and one neutron.

Tritium has one proton and 2 neutrons.

Drag and drop one neutron to the nucleus.


Drag and drop one more neutron to the nucleus.

Add one neutron to the nucleus. This is Deuterium atom. It is stable.

Add one more neutron to the nucleus to create Tritium.

Tritium is unstable, as shown here.

Click on the reset button. Click on the Reset button at the bottom-right corner to reset the screen.
Next click on Symbol screen at the bottom of the screen. Next click on Symbol screen at the bottom of the window.


In the Symbol screen, students

  • interpret atomic symbols
  • by building atoms using protons, neutrons and electrons.

Point to the Symbol screen.


Put the cursor on various items.

Here on the Symbol screen, a Symbol panel is seen.

Again create a Helium atom.

Atom of every element is represented by a symbol.


It gives information about atomic number, mass number and charge.


On the Symbol panel-

  • The subscript number is atomic number.
  • Superscript number is mass number.
  • Charge on the atom is shown on the top-right corner.
Drag and drop protons , neutrons and electrons to the atom.

Add protons, neutrons and electrons to the atom.


Observe the Symbol panel.


Note the change in name of element, atomic number, mass number and also the charge.

Click on Game screen.


Point to the games.

Click on the Game screen.


Four different games are available here.


These games will test the knowledge gained using this simulation.


Explore the Game screen by choosing your own game.

Click on timer.

Click on Sound Symbol.

We can enable the timer before the start of the game.

We can also control the game sound by clicking on the Sound button.

Using the simulation we have,
  • Built models of Hydrogen and Helium atoms.
  • Added or removed electrons to create ions.
  • Added or removed neutrons to create isotopes.

As an assignment,
  • Create a neutral oxygen atom.
  • Add two electrons to the neutral atom.
  • And observe the change in various parameters on the panels.


Try removing an electron from the inner shell of the atom, observe the results.
