00:00 | Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on “Basics of Bezier tool” using Inkscape. |
00:06 | In this tutorial, we will learn to: |

00:24 | I will be recording this tutorial in maximum resolution mode. |
00:28 | This is to accommodate all the tools that will be demonstrated. |
00:32 | Let us open Inkscape. |
00:35 | First let us draw a straight line using Bezier tool. |
00:39 | The Bezier tool is right below the Pencil tool. |
00:42 | Let's click on it. |
00:44 | Observe the 4 options in the Tool controls bar at the top left. |
00:48 | There are 4 modes of drawing bezier curve. |
00:51 | By default, the Create regular bezier path option is enabled. |
00:57 | Click once on the canvas and move the cursor to the other end. |
01:01 | Click once again. Notice that the line drawn is highlighted in green color. |
01:07 | Now right-click to complete the line. |
01:11 | The two end points of the line are called nodes. We will learn more about them a little later. |
00:17 | Next, let us draw a triangle. |
01:21 | First, draw a slanted line. Click once and draw another line at an angle. |
01:27 | Now click once more to draw a third line and join it with the starting node to complete the triangle. |
01:34 | Next, we will draw a curved line using bezier tool. |
01:38 | Click on the canvas to draw a straight line. Click again, hold and drag to form a curve. |
01:46 | Right-click to complete the curve. |
01:48 | In a similar way, draw some more curve shapes on the canvas. |
01:55 | Remember these steps- 1. Click and draw a straight line. |
01:59 | 2. Click again, hold and drag to form a curve. |

02:06 | Press Ctrl + A and clear the canvas before proceeding further. |
02:11 | Next, let us learn how to draw a closed curved path. |
02:15 | First draw a curved line on the canvas. |
02:18 | Then we release the mouse and move the cursor away from the end node of the curved line. |
02:23 | We see a curved path in red color. |
02:27 | If you click once and move the cursor, we see a straight path in red color. To make it as curve, click and drag. |
02:36 | Again at the end node the line curves as we move. |
02:41 | Again click once; we see a straight path in red color. To make the straight line curve, click and drag. |
02:50 | Again at the end node, the line curves as we move. Move the cursor and go back to the starting node and close the path. |
02:59 | Go to Tool controls bar. Click on the second icon of the mode. This helps to create spiral paths and irregular shapes. |
03:08 | Draw some irregular curves and close the path. |
03:15 | Observe that it transforms into the closest spiral shape. Let me clear the canvas now. |
03:22 | The third icon creates only straight lines. Click on it and draw lines on the canvas. |
03:29 | Note, we cannot draw curved lines in this mode. |
03:32 | We can draw triangles or polygons which have straight sides. |
03:40 | Click on the last icon and draw on the canvas. |
03:44 | In this mode, we can draw only parallel and perpendicular lines i.e. either vertical or horizontal lines. |
03:52 | So, we can draw squares and rectangles in this mode. |
03:58 | Let me delete all the shapes drawn. |
04:02 | Shape option helps to draw lines or curves in a particular shape. |
04:07 | Click on the drop-down button. |
04:09 | There are 5 options here- None, Triangle in, Triangle out, Ellipse, From clipboard. |
04:18 | The first option that is None does not give any effect. So, we will move on to Triangle in. |
04:25 | Click on it and draw a line on the canvas. |
04:28 | The line is transformed to a triangle shape inwards. |
04:34 | Next, click on Triangle out and draw a line on the canvas. |
04:39 | Now a triangle shape is formed outwards. |
04:43 | Click on the Ellipse and draw a line. |
04:47 | Observe that the line is in ellipse shape. |
04:50 | We will learn about the last option that is From clipboard in later tutorial. |
04:56 | Now, let us learn to add, edit and delete nodes. |
05:00 | This can be done using the Node tool. |
05:03 | Delete the lines on the canvas. |
05:06 | Go to Tool controls bar. Change the Mode to regular path and Shape to None. |
05:13 | Come back to the canvas and draw a rough human palm. |
05:23 | Now, click on the Node tool. |
05:26 | Notice all the nodes in this figure are visible. |
05:30 | Turn your attention to the Tools Controls bar. |
05:33 | The first 6 icons here, help to add and delete nodes and paths. |
05:38 | Refer to the tool tip to understand better. |
05:41 | Click on any segment. Notice both the nodes turn blue. |
05:48 | Then click on the Add node option. |
05:52 | Observe that a new node has been added exactly in-between the nodes of the selected segment. |
05:58 | Now select a smaller segment and repeat the above steps. |
06:04 | You will see that a new node is added at the mid-point of the smaller segment. |
06:10 | Now, select the newly added node. |
06:13 | Click on Delete node option. The node is now deleted. |
06:18 | Click on any one of the nodes on the palm. |
06:21 | To make the bezier handle visible, click on the last but one icon on the Tool controls bar. |
06:27 | Now, the bezier handles for the selected segment is visible. |
06:32 | If not, then just click on the segment and without releasing the mouse, move it a little. |
06:37 | The segment will curve and the bezier handles will be visible now. |
06:41 | Click on the handles to resize and rotate the selected node. |
06:45 | In a similar way, modify the other nodes too. |
07:04 | The next icon helps to join nodes. |
07:07 | Observe there is an extra node on the index finger. |
07:11 | Select the extra middle node and the top node by using the Shift key. |
07:18 | Now, click on join node icon. Observe that the nodes are now joined together. |
07:25 | The next icon helps to break path at selected nodes. |
07:29 | Let me now break the connection between the thumb and the index finger. |
07:33 | So, select the joining node in between and click on break path icon. |
07:40 | Un-select the node. Then select it again and move it a little. |
07:46 | You will notice that the path is broken and the nodes are separated into 2 distinct nodes. |
07:53 | To join them, select the same 2 nodes and click on the join selected end-nodes icon on the Tool controls bar. |
08:03 | Notice, a new path is created between these 2 nodes. |
08:08 | Click on the next icon i.e. Delete segment icon to remove the path or segment. Now the path is removed. |
08:17 | Press Ctrl + Z to undo this action. |
08:20 | Let me keep this hand aside. Click on the Node tool once again. |
08:26 | Let us learn how to use next 4 icons on the Tool controls bar. |
08:30 | These icons help to edit the selected nodes. |
08:34 | Using the Bezier tool ,draw an inverted U shape. Click on the Node tool. Observe there are 3 nodes. |
08:49 | Select the top node and click on Make selected nodes corner icon on the Tool controls bar. |
08:55 | This makes it as the corner node. |
08:58 | Click on the bezier handles and move them up and down to see the change. |
09:03 | Click on the next icon to make the node smooth. Observe the change in the shape. |
09:11 | Click on the next icon which makes the node symmetric. |
09:16 | Click on the next icon which makes the node auto smooth. |
09:20 | The next 2 icons work only on segments. So, select the left segment of the U shape and click on the first icon. |
09:30 | As the tool tip says, the segment is now made into a straight line. |
09:35 | Click on the bezier handle and try to move. You will see that we cannot make it curved. |
09:44 | Click on the next icon to make it a curved line again. |
09:49 | Now move the bezier handles and now we can make it into a curve shape. |
09:54 | Click on the next icon to convert selected object to path. |
09:58 | Click on the next icon to convert the stroke to path. |
10:02 | Click and drag the nodes to make the strokes visible. |
10:08 | The next 2 icons help to move the selected nodes in X and Y directions respectively. |
10:15 | Click on the up and down arrows and observe the change. |
10:24 | The next 2 icons work only if the path has clipping and masking effects. |
10:29 | You can explore these options on your own. |
