Welcome to this Spoken tutorial!
|
Switch to Slide 2.
|
In the coming few minutes we’ll talk about the process of changing your profile(Moodle).
We have used Moodle 1.9.8 for this tutorial.
|
Open the browser Window
|
First lets open a web browser. A web browser can be Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer or Google-Chrome. Now type an address in the address bar. This address is of your Moodle site. After typing in the address, press enter. The page of your Moodle site will open up.
|
Move the cursor towards the RHS of the screen and roll over the text "You are not logged in" and then point to "login" and click
|
Now look towards the right-hand-side top corner of the page. You will see a text “You are not logged in” and a link “login”. This login link will lead you to the login-page of your website. Click on it to log into your website.
|
Type/choose username and password. Click on the login button.
|
The next page will ask you for your username and password. I will type in my username and password here and click on the login button. After you logged in to the system this page will take you to the front page of the moodle site. This front page may differ because moodle site may differ from institute to institute & organization to organization.
|
Move the cursor towards the RHS of the screen and roll over the text "You are logged in as <username>". Click on the name link
|
Now lets look towards the right-hand-side top corner of the page again. Now the text has changed to “You are logged in as” your name. Click on the name link and now you will be able to change your profile.
|
Switch to the browser Window. Roll cursor over the entries. Point to Edit Profile tab. Click on it.
|
Observe this particular page. It displays all the entries you have uploaded earlier. If you want to upload new entries or change existing ones, click on Edit Profile tab. The Edit Profile tab will take you to the Edit Profile page. It will show you lots of entries here. We won’t get into much details about all the entries but focus on the entries which are more frequent & more relevant in every different Moodle website.
|
Roll cursor over a field marked in red and point to the star.
|
A field marked in red and followed by a star is a required field. So you have to enter that particular field otherwise the system won’t allow you to proceed to the next page or update your profile.
|
Switch to the browser Window. Point the cursor to each field as you talk about it. Type in the required data at each point.
|
- Firstname - First name is your name. Eg- My first name is Gaurav. You can change it according to your requirement.
- Surname - My Surname is Parashar so here its Parashar.
- Email address is your active email address. For eg- abc@xyz.com so xyz.com is the domain name and abc is your username or login name.
- Email display – This particular field is used to show or hide your email address. It has three different options.
- The first option is “Hide my email address from everyone”. It means that no one will be able to view your email address.
- The second option is “Allow everyone to see my email address“. It means that every one will be able to view your email address
- And last but not the least ”Allow only other course members to see my email address“. It means that members of the course to which you have subscribed will be able to see your email ID.
I have chosen “Allow every one to see my email address”.
- Email Activated - This email can be activated or disabled. This means that if you select “This email address is enabled”, then any email which is generated by Moodle will be sent to your email address. If it is disabled then no email will be sent to your email address.
I have selected “The email address is enabled”.
- City / Town - Choose appropriately.
- Country - I have chosen India.
- Timezone - It is UTC 5.5 Time-zone of India, Delhi.
- Preferred Language is English so I have chosen English over here.
- Description - If you want to write some quotes, eg- a famous quote that reflects your personality, you can write all that here.
- Picture option - you can modify or upload your picture. To upload click on Browse and select a picture. After clicking on that picture you will see the link of the entire image. It means that now it is ready to be uploaded on your website.
- Over here these are Interest Areas, so I have listed down some of my interest areas. The use of this list of interests is to attract other users who have similar interests so that they can come together and share.
- Now, click on Show Advanced button to reveal additional fields. This particular option will show fields like Email digest type,Forum auto-subscribe, Forum tracking, When editing text, AJAX and Javascript, Screen reader, Web Page, ICQ number, etc. I will now describe these fields one by one:
- Email digest type determines how one receives any posts from forums to which one is subscribed. There are three possible choices:
- No digest (one receives individual emails)
- Complete (a single digest daily)
- Subjects (a single digest daily with only the post topics included).
- Forum auto-subscribe type lets one decide if one wants email copies of posts that are added to forums. If you set this to subscribe, the system will automatically email one copies of new posts in forums that one posts in, unless they manually override it when posting.
- Forum tracking is used for enabling forum tracking means highlighting the posts you have not read yet, which should improve your forum navigation.
- When editing text can usually be left on "Use HTML editor (some browsers only)". This allows for text formatting options, but requires newer browsers. If you find your browser is not letting you edit text, change this setting to "Use standard web forms"
- AJAX and Javascript if selected No: Use basic web features. if Yes then you will be to be able to drag and drop.
- The screen reader option in Moodle disables the html editor and provides a chat window without frames.
- Fields like Web Page, ICQ number, Skype ID ,AIM ID ,Yahoo ID and MSN ID are used self explanatory.
- Next is ID number. This ID number may contain information about your college. Say for example, you college might have given you a roll number or an enrollment number. This ID number will contain that.
- Institution - The field will contain the Institute name you are studying in.
- Next is Department – The Department you are in.
- Next is Phone number – It will contain your phone number.
- Mobile number – If you have one, you can store it here.
- Address – Your Address.
|
Switch to the browser Window. Point the cursor to "Update Profile" and click it. Roll the cursor over the information displayed
|
After updating this information, click on update profile which is just below the page. When you click on this, all the information you have given above will be stored in the system and this information will be sent to the Moodle site. Moodle site will now contain your updated information. Now you can view it over here. “I am a jolly good fellow”, “India”, “Ghaziabad” all the information I have updated is displayed here.
I hope you have understood and enjoyed this particular tutorial on updating your profile on Moodle.
